Marley's best, at least for me... - Review written on July 26, 2007

This was my first Bob Marley record, and it's still my favorite. It still resounds years later not because of any nostalgic feelings I might have, but because its art and sincerity are still strong and still sing to me. I love every song here. There isn't one bad note in this entire album. Coming in from the Cold and Bad Card are the best off side one, and I do like the dance hit Could You Be Loved. The album is one of Bob's best, and it's a damn shame it was his final album, because I'm sure he had a lot more to offer this world. One of my favorite songs here is Redemption Song, the last song on the album, and the last studio cut Bob released. It's a folk song, with only Bob and his guitar, but that's what makes it so strong and moving. This is arguably Marley's greatest album, and one that will live forever....

This album intorduced the kids in my neighborhood to Bob Marley in 1980, and after his death a year later, the kids at my high school (Wando High in Mt. Pleasant SC) jumped on the Bob bandwagon much to the disgust of us who were already initiated.

Overall, this is a fine piece of work. Bob's usual positive thinking anthems are once again set to pulsating backing from the Wailers' band and wife Rita's I-Threes. "Real Situation," "Bad card" "Coming in from the Cold" in particular put out some messages that go down easy on the ears and dancing feet. "Could You be Loved" was a rare dancefloor hit of this era that really had something to say and "Redemption Song" needs no additional commentary. Just hear it, and it's enough.

The latter can be said for this CD as a whole.

The beauty here is that we get a bunch of Marley songs that haven't been overplayed. 'Could You Be Loved' is the closest the cd comes to something that has been overplayed.

And that leaves us we Bob's brillance. The guy could write a song and a catchy one at that. If you've filled your collection with Exodus, Burnin', and Catch A Fire then this is a good next step.

Excellent sound also.

Bob Marley & The Wailers Uprising album from 1980 was a massive hit in America and England with songs such as Could You Be Loved, Coming In From The Cold, Pimper's Paradise, Work and probably Bobs most famous song Redemption Songs.

The bonus tracks 11 & 12 are also a interesting listen.

Ive read from other reviews that Uprising and Confrantation should be formed together to make a Disk 1 and Disk 2 or just the best of on one album.(As they were made at the same time)
I personally think that is a brilliant idea,
as it could look like this or...

Disk 1

1. Coming In From The Cold
2. Real Situation
3. Bard Card
4. We And Dem
5. Work
6. Zion Train
7. Pimper's Paradise
8. Could You Be Loved
9. Forever Loving Jah
10. Redemption Song

Disk 2

1. Chant Down Babylon
2. Buffalo Soldier
3. Jump Nyabinghi
4. Mix Up, Mix Up
5. Give Thanks And Praises
6. Blackman Redemption
7. Trench Town
8. Stiff Necked Fools
9. I Know
10. Rastaman Live Up!

or like this....

1. Coming In From The Cold
2. Buffalo Soldier
3. Bad Card
4. Chant Down Babylon
5. Work
6. Jump Nyabinghi
7. Pimper's Paradise
8. Could You Be Loved
9. Forever Loving Jah
10. Stiff Necked Fools
11. Redemption Song

If the producers were to make a Uprising/Confrantation deluxe they could decide on the song positions.

Uprising can be sold in any music stores or online, make sure you get your hands on it.

Have you noticed something? that every song on here should be on "Legend 1" or "Legend 2(Natural Mystic)"

1. Coming In From The Cold 13/10
2. Real Situation 9.7/10
3. Bad Card 10/10
4. We And Dem 6/10
5. Work 10/10
6. Zion Train 9.1/10
7. Pimpers Paradise 10/10
8. Could You Be Loved 11/10
9. Forever Loving 9.7/10
10. Redemption Songs 12/10

IMAGINE SOME OF CONFRANTATION SONGS ON IT TOO!
THEY WERE BOTH MADE 1980.
SO WHY NOT.

THIS IS WHAT IT COULD LOOK LIKE!!!!!!!!!!

1. Coming In From The Cold 13/10
2. Buffalo Soldier 12/10
3. Could You Be Loved 11/10
4. Redemption Songs 12/10
5. Pimpers Paradise 10/10

LOOK AT THAT 5 HITS!!!!! ON ONE ALBUM!!!!!

I'll go in to more detail why Confratation and Uprising should be mixed together (incase you wondered why).
Ok, Uprising was released 1980,
and Confrataion (who nobody had heard of yet)
was made at 1980 too.
So Chris Blackwell decided on his favourite album of the two, he choose Uprising.
The mistake was by Chris Blackwell was that, he should have just put the best songs on one album! So that would of been Uprising.
So im just relieving Chris Blackwells mistake,
ANDS THATS WHY I WANT UPRISING WITH JUST THE BEST SONGS ON IT!
So maybe "Island Records", could release a Uprising Deluxe Edition, with the best songs of the two on one. thank you.

I like to think of Confrantation as part 2 of the Uprising album, well because they were made both in 1980. So why not.

The Uprising album could of looked like this or..

1. Coming In From The Cold
2. Real Situation
3. Bad Card
4. We And Dem
5. Work
6. Zion Train
7. Pimpers Paradise
8. Could You Be Loved
9. Forever Loving Jah
10. Redemption Songs

Disc 2

1. Chant Down Babylon
2. Buffalo Soldier
3. Jump Niyabinghi
4. Mix Up, Mix Up
5. Give Thanks And Praises
6. Blackman Redemption
7. Trenchtown
8. Stiff Necked Fools
9. I Know
10. Rastaman Live Up

Or it could of been, just the best songs out of the two, on Uprising..............

1. Coming In From The Cold
2. Buffalo Soldier
3. Could You Be Loved
4. Bad Card
5. Pimpers Paradise
6. Chant Down Babylon
7. Work
8. Stiff Necked Fools
9. Jump Niyabinghi
10. Redemption Songs

Bonus Track:
11. I Know
12. Redemption Songs Band Version

Which one would you prefer?
I would probably prefer the second one.

Uprising, even without Confratation songs on it, is a very good album, FAR better than any other of his albums.
But if they had but some of Confratation songs on it, so it would be like Disc 1 and Disc 2, or just put the best songs on 1 Disc,

THAT WOULD OF MADE UPRISING, PROBABLY THE BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME.

Uprising - 1980 - Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Introduction.
This is a Bob Marley album, which only Bob Marley could ever produce. Let me tell you how good "Uprising", is.

Overall.
Bob Marley has made many amazing albums over the short years of his life, but maybe "Uprising", might be his best.
The album kicks of with a happy taste of life, and ends in a more serious side of life.
Here are my descriptions of each song, and how good they really are.

1. Coming In From The Cold - 10/10 - A very bright song, and sets of the album very nicely, with the sweet vibes of reggae never leaving the song.

2. Real Situation - 8.6/10 - Another bright beat, but sings of how the world could come to an end, very good reggae by Bob Marley and the Wailers.

3. Bad Card - 9.9/10 - Classic Lyrics, good beat, good vocals, makes this song very enjoyable to listen to.
"Dem go tired to see my face, Can't get me out of the race".

4. We And Dem - 9.1/10 - A very underated song, I don't understand why poeple can critizise it.

5. Work - 10/10 - This song has amazing lyrics,
"Five days to go working for the next day,
Four days to go working for the next day,
Say we got three days to go working for the next day,
Two days to go working for the next day,
Say we got one day to go now, working for the everyday is work!"

6. Zion Train - 9.4/10 - This song, is a local favourite in Kingston (Jamiaca), a very good song since we are now coming in to the middle off the album.

7. Pimper's Paradise - 10/10 - This song is on the,
"Natural Mystic Greates Hits" (Legend 2) and deserves that place very well.

8. Could You Be Loved - 10/10 - My personal favourite Bob Marley song, was one of the two singles' on "Uprising", became a worldwide hit, and still is.

9. Forever Loving Jah - 9.8/10 - This is a worship song to the Rastafarians god, Jah, it is a catchy song, and is followed by a classic.

10. Redemption Songs - 10/10 - An equisite song, from start to finish,
"Old pirates yes they rob I,
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I, from the bottemless pit,
But my hand was made strong,
By the hand of the almighty,
We forward in this generation, triumphantly."

Overview.
This is an affordable Bob Marley and the Wailers classic, featuring many great songs.
Also "Confratation", was made at the same time as this album, so try and get your hands on that too.

Edition Notes.
You can buy this album from your local retailer, definately from any CD shop.

This was Bob Marley and the Wailers, last album, but is probably their best, it would of been even better if they had put some songs from "Confratation" onto here like "Buffalo Soldier" and "Stiff Necked Fools".
Because "Confratation" was made at the same time as "Uprising", 1980, but they didn't like thoughs' songs, so they put there favourites onto "Uprising", they made a mistake of course with some of the songs they shelved.

Imagine how could Uprsing would of been with some of "Confratation" songs on it.

A mistake by Chris Blackwell.

But the album is very good, and includes my all time favourite songs ever, "Coming In From The Cold" and "Coul You Be Loved".

Many Bob Marley fans insist the best or "real" Marley is the rawer, rootsier early stuff like CATCH A FIRE or the early Tuff Gong recordings. While I would agree that you can't go wrong with virtually any Bob Marley album, I personally prefer the more polished and (even more) melodic pop reggae he created towards the end of his career, like KAYA and this fantastic album, UPRISING.

On UPRISING, Marley is at the height of his powers and he's accompanied by a stellar band. All of the musical elements fall perfectly into place on every single track. These tunes demonstrate that Marley had a greater, more sophisticated mastery over his craft at this particular point in his life. He was making the best of every moment he had. It's been a while since I read Tim White's excellent and highly recommended Bob Marley biography CATCH A FIRE, but I'm pretty sure Marley was aware that he had brain cancer during the recording of this album. Sadly, his tragic death was just around the corner.

Without a doubt, this is soulful, spiritual music whether the songs deal with worldly themes such as on "Pimper's Paradise" or overtly religious ones like "Forever Loving Jah." Even an agnostic like me can revel in the warm love and sheer joy in this music, which I feel even when Bob addresses the negative sides of life as he does on "Bad Card," for example. This album is loaded with important, universal themes the whole world should hear. The last track (on the original album release), "Redemption Song," featuring Marley alone on vocal and guitar, is something quite different from the other tracks and it's particularly poignant. On the whole, UPRISING is so fun to listen to and so groove-worthy that I've heard it hundreds of times and I never get tired of it.

Bob Marley created raggae and he's still the best raggae musician of all time. He's one of the greatest musicians ever, regardless of the genre.

This was the last album released in Bob Marley's lifetime, and in my opinion the gong is at his best. The band really stepped it up for this recording in my opinion. The Wailers are awesome on every recording, but this recording really stands out in my mind. Released in 1980, this was at the height of the band's popularity. The dual lead guitars here almost give this album a feel of a rock album. Don't get me wrong though it is still reggae. The classics Could You Be Loved?, and Redemption Song are known to everyone because of their appearance on Legend, but the rest of the tracks also have a very good groove to them. This is essential for any music collection reguardless if you like reggae or not. This is one of the top 10 records ever in my opinion. Don't die without listening to this, because you'll be missing out.

Uprising was the final Bob Marley & the Wailers album released durning Marley's lifetime before his death in 1981 from Cancer. The album seems to carry a darker, more sorrowful sound than his previous work, which only adds to the album's beauty. Marley seems to know that his final days are at hand and he sounds passionate, yet almost weary from his battle with Cancer, as if he is in the middle of an actual war. Songs like "We and Dem," "Bad Card," "Work," and "Zion Train," seem to be pleas to the almighty and to people in general to come together and bring people together, almost as if, while Marley approaches his last days, so does the entire Human race.

Lighter, almost happier songs like "Coming In From the Cold," "Pimper's Paradise," and "Could You Be Loved" seem to address the worlds ills with a hint of happiness, the classic Marley style. The songs carry a dark, foreboding message of Bob's passing and the lyrics of each song stay with you forever. I can guarentee if you buy this album, your life will be changed forever.

`Uprising' was the Wailers 8th album and the final one cut & released in Bob Marley's life. Besides the classic `Could You Be Loved' and the beautiful stripped down `Redemption Song', there's a lot of dramatic numbers here, and like their previous album `Survival', Bob once again is brooding over more serious social issues & sharing his ideology. As a crew the Wailers made such important music and cut so many classic albums, what a talent Bob Marley was to lose. Who knows what he could have gone on to do. This guy really touched the world & made some incredible music, and `Uprising' is another Must Own album from his collection. R.I.P.

Now more than ever, people understand through these newly released remastered albums how Bob Marley is one of if not the greatest singer to ever live. He is the only artist I know that every album he creates can lift you up when you are not feeling sharp. Songs such as Coming in from the Cold and Could this be love are so captivating, it is almost hard to express it. Bob Marley is the only artist ever who has never released a bad song.

I have been a huge Bob Marley fan for a while, but I just bought this album today and WOW it is one of my favorite by him. The last album by The Wailers is such an uplifting album to anyone in any mood, regardless. My personal favorites on the album are Could You Be Loved, Bad Card and Redemption Song. Also included on the remastered edition, you get two bonus tracks. The are Redemption Song (Band Version) and Could You Be Loved (12" mix). If you don't like buying "greatest hits" or "best of" albums, then this is one you should start with if you are new to Bob Marley, although it is his last piece of work.

Now so many years after Bob's death, left this album lays downs rhythms that are still unequalled. Unlike many overrated artists, there is something really magical about The Wailers final album. Tracks like Could you Be Loved and Work really get the body moving. This can be attributed to the Barrett brothers who really hold this band together behind Bob's empassioned vocals. This album picks up where Survival and Rastaman Vibration left off. If there was an album that a tour album should have captured, it was this one instead of Babylon By Bus, which captured the Rastaman Vibration tour

Marley now bearing "a sadness and a dread magnetism", Uprising gives the listener a spiritual vision of what was happening in Bobs life. He was already ill, and he gave his testament with an acoustic ballad which was titled "Redemption Song". It is Bobs last burst of studio creativity. The fact that the music retains the strenght that matches the painting of a muscled rasta rising from the earth at sunrise on the front sleeve shows Bobs sheer determination to rage against the dying of life light. A great record, thanks,Bob.

Bob Marley & The Wailers' last album might seem like a strange place to start, but it was my first Wailers' album, and it is still my favorite. There aren't any huge 'hits' here, but there aren't any songs that aren't classics. This is one of those albums you can listen to over and over again and never get tired of hearing it. With each listen, it just becomes more of an old friend you love spending time with. The song order is flawless, every tune is memorable, and the production values are perfect. In my opinion, if you only have one reggae album in your collection, this should be it. Yeah, I know Legend is supposed to be the "essential" Bob Marley album, but I feel this album does a better job of capturing Bob at the height of his powers. Every song is a gem, even if they weren't all radio hits. This album will pick you up and take you for a ride that will leave you feeling good. It will become a good friend.

Though there isn't any denying that Exodus is his most famous album, Uprising is my personal favorite. Nearly every song makes you want to get up and dance. It is a true credit to Marley's song writing and singing abilities that he can take serious social themes and not only put them to notes, but also to make the listener smile and feel uplifted. On top of this, Redemtion Song is one of the best songs ever written by anyone. You can't go wrong in buying this album.

Although exodus had most of his classic songs, this album does contain some as well. The last album of his career, (Confrontation I believe was released posthumously), it really does sum up his message. Redemption Song and Could You Be Loved? are absolute classics that have and will stand the test of time. Coming in from the cold is a great song and so is everying thing on the album. This is a classic.
