Had One For Years - Review written on October 26, 2008

I had this coffee grinder for a number of years and somehow it got lost when I moved. It came with a coffee maker as a free gift a number of years ago and it way out lived the coffee maker. I was still using the grinder until about two years ago when it was lost. Maybe because I am not the biggest coffee drinker but I do like certain flavored coffees and prefer to grind the beans myself. I do recommend this grinder great price.

The Krups 203-70 Fast Touch Coffee Grinder has exceeded all my expectations. Before ordering, I did quite a bit of online research looking for something to use specifically as a spice grinder and wound up here. Amazon also has the lowest price, great service and low shipping cost. I placed my order online late Saturday afternoon and it was leaning against my front door the following Tuesday. That's hard to beat. Due to a recent medical condition, I've had to completely change my diet to a very low fat and under 2000 mg sodium daily diet, so I'm using herbs & spices like crazy and needed something that could not only combine a good mix of these, but turn them into a powder. The Krups 203-70 does exactly that... My first test was a teaspoon of whole fennel seeds ground continuously for about 8-seconds (shaking the Krups up and down so none would be lost under the blades) and a fine powder came out. So fine that static electricity made a good bit cling to the clear cup/lid.. like talc. The cup has a very smooth, non-textured finish that cleans easily. Instead of rinsing it under water, I just closed my eyes and 'puffed' into it.. all gone. Same to the blade area. Of course, some aroma remains inside and can't be rinsed away, but the next use will just absorb it and leave it's own. I'm not grinding anything with oils so I'm not expecting any discolorations, ransid oil odors or greasy residues that may also stain... none of that. The most surprising feature is how quiet this is. The only grinding, crunching, rattle noises are from what you put in it, like peppercorns. The motor on this is whisper quiet.. it's spooky . One thing though... the first time you start it make sure you're holding it with both hands. There's lot's of torque in that little engine. I'm using this exclusively for herbs & spices so there should be no strain at all on the motor and, hopefully, will last for years to come. I've had it now for almost 2 months and if it failed to work today, I'd buy the same model new again in a heartbeat. Cord length is about 24". Had to squeeze that in... It's hard to find a review that mentions the cord length on anything.

Excellent product for anyone wishing to grind their own coffee. This is the 2nd one we have owned. The first one purchased over 18 years ago and still works, but the plastic cover cracked. Considering how often we have used it, I'm surprised it lasted that long. The only thing I wish is that it had a cleaning brush with it, in case one wanted grind spices and coffee. Would recommend to anyone.

I love this coffee grinder. It is well designed. However, I have gone through 4 grinders in 6 years. The grinder is easily damaged when dropped, even a short distance (12 inches). I have not been able to get replacement parts. Which is why I have gone through 4 grinders in 6 years. This grinder does a great job, when handled with care. The other Krupps grinders seem to be appearance motivated than performance motivated.

Still grinding, after all these years - Review written on September 23, 2008

I had one of these for about 5 years. Eventually, it developed a few cracks and I had to replace it. It didn't take too long, a couple of years ago, to find the exact model I was decommissioning at, amazingly, the exact same price I paid for one the first time I bought one.

Operation is easy. You feed it some coffee beans and it grinds them. Not much else to say, really. It's durable, quick and dependable. After 2 years, it looks as good as new and, if it begins to crack after a couple more years of operation, I don't mind. I'll probably end up buying another one of the same.

I purchased this grinder 9 months ago, and have been using it grinds 6 lbs of coffee. It works well for me - the only coffee drinker at my home.

The mechanics are solid. The motor is powerful and smooth, and grinds 3 spoons (maximum capacity) in 10-12 seconds to a quite fine grounds. The grounds are quite even. It could make the coffee beans really fine grounds by grinding 5 more seconds. The inner side of the grinder is very smooth. With a brush, it can be easily cleaned. But you need a brush ($5).

The grinder is also very secure. The trigger button is concave - without the lid on, one cannot trigger the grinder and hurt oneself. In addition, the power cord is really short - one must disconnect it to get the coffee out. Some people may hate this but this secures our fingers.

As a lot of reports saying it dies after 12-15 months, I will follow up here.

I have been using this product for two weeks. So far, I haven't had any problems, but I have experienced that if I use it for grinding 5 oz. of coffee at once, in small batches, it starts to smell like something burning.

Just as good as I expected. Grinds thoroughly and evenly. About 3 oz. at a time. As fine as you like. We've only ground about 2 lbs. so far but it's Cuisinart predecessor quit on it's first 3 oz.'s. Uses very little shelf space.

I've been using this model for years, and just bought a new one. My prior one lasted roughly 7 years (guess) of fairly regular use. In my case, I mostly used it for grinding my own spices, rather than for coffee.

COFFEE (4 stars): As indicated in magazines like Cooks Illustrated, this unit does a very adequate job of ginding coffee beans - provided you master the skill of replicating the optimal degree of grind for different uses (i.e., automatic drip, espresso, percolator, stove-brewed turkish style, etc.). However, any serious coffee aficianado will quickly agree that a proper "burr grinder" yeilds better (more evenly ground) results than a buzz grinder like this one. Still, for what it is, and for its price, it's still one of the best 'buzz' grinders available.

SPICES (5 stars): After blending and toasting my own whole spices (for things like fresh homemade garam masala, sambar masala, etc.), I let them cool and then grind them with my trusty krups, which, in 2 passes, can grind enough to fill a standard spice bottle. The only spice the krups (and all comparable models) has trouble with are whole cloves, which tend to be very resiny, and clog the machine.

OTHER (5 stars): Although not really designed for it, the krups can do an adequate job of: grinding dried rice and/or dried lentils into a very very fine grit (almost but not quite a true flour). It can also grind granulated sugar into confectioner's 10x sugar.

Bottom line: It's strong, compact, powerful, durable, simple to use, fairly easy to clean, and inexpensive ... what more could you ask for ?

I brought this coffee grinder to serve my purpose as a SPICE GRINDER. I bought this one as it had more power than the other spice grinder advertised by krups.
It serves my purpose well. My roasted spices grind to fine powder (which is how i want it) in very less time. I am really happy with this product.
I am sure it would serve well as a coffee grinder too.
Perfect for Grinding Seeds, Grains & Nuts into Flour - Review written on August 04, 2008

I know that this is a coffee grinder and I bet it's great for that too. It's solid, small, nice-looking, and operates quietly. It's got a stainless steel interior and stainless blade as well. It seems to be built to last. If fingerprints on appliances bother you, consider getting the white one since the high gloss black plastic casing was filled with fingerprints after a use or two. It cleaned up nicely, though.

In spite of its name, I bought it specifically to grind tiny chia and other seeds, nuts, and mung beans to create flours. It does that amazingly well.

I am delighted with this little machine and highly recommend it and as usual, the Amazon price is great !

A burr coffee grinder protects the grinds from becoming burnt...
I guess it's an ok little machine. Once I got to my house, though, I was wondering if our magic bullet would have done the same job. I used it for a couple days and may use it again (or for grinding other things, who knows) but I bought a capresso burr grinder and that one works MAGICALLY. this one is hard to clean. I'll hang onto it if I need it, though, as it was a wedding gift and it DOES work. It will give you a nice grind if you let it.

I wish it held a little more, and the diagonal sloping top makes a little of the grounds spill out if you fill it all the way up. But it does a very good job, does it very quickly, and the price is right.

Decent, long lasting grinder - Review written on July 17, 2008

Rating: 4 out of 5

I have had this same Krups blade grinder for 12 years now; it always works and has never had a problem. Probably the best grinder for the money if you can get around the "dust and boulders" that these grinders put out. The dust gets overbrewed and boulders get underbrewed with these machines.

Sure, you can make some good drip or french press coffee with some fresh beans and this machine. It will probably be better than the vast majority of coffee you get at shops. If you want to really control what's going on though, a good burr grinder (at 4x the cost and up) will help you achieve consistently superior coffee.

For what it is, this grinder is excellent.

This little thing is cost efficient and works great. I was leary about buying a blade grinder vs the ring type that crushes the beans. This little grinder works really well. I can even keep it going to get espresso type grounds if I want. It takes literally only seconds to grind a full pot worth of coffee. I'm really happy with this purchase.
Some problems but great grinding action - Review written on July 11, 2008

Rating: 2 out of 5

Great grinding action, quiet, and fast. Downfalls are hard to clean, and we have had a problem with the switch. We had trouble with the switch not turning machine on when pressed. We tried un-plugging the unit and then plugging it in again and the switch works. Nothing in the literature says to do this, but it is the only way ours will work. Would not buy another.
Poor assembly - Review written on July 07, 2008

I purchased this product as an early birthday present for my husband. Imagine both of our disapointments when we found the grinding assembly was not assembled properly. The grinder would not turn because a part was missing and the grinder rubbed against the side of bean holder freezing it in place. The bummer is that I tossed the return slip before I checked it for flaws and now have waited too long to return it - so I have to eat the cost. I'm surprised that a usually quality manufacturer such as Krups would have such poor quality control. It was made in Mexico.
wish it had a spout - Review written on June 28, 2008

The grinder grinds well. However, I like the type of kitchen grinder which can hold beans, grind beans, and has a spout for the ground beans to come out of-so one dosen't have to add beans every time. This grinder has to have beans put into it each time one grinds, then the ground coffee has to be emptied each time-a big hassle in my opinion. But it will be useful, due to the small size, for travel grinding, for fresh coffee on the road, one cup at a time.
Good Little LOUD Coffee Grinder - Review written on June 23, 2008

Edit: 7/5/08: So I was just grinding some coffee, and a blade broke clean off. It actually left a gash in the interior metal pan, too. I guess this grinder sucks after all.

--
I ended up purchasing the Krups Fast Touch Coffee Grinder because I was tired of waiting for all the little old ladies to finish grinding their 15 bags of coffee at the grinding station at Costco. I have a Krups espresso maker, so I figured this would be a good match.

Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. The grinder takes only 3 ounces at a time, but there really isn't a need to grind more unless you have 25 people in your household drinking coffee at any given time. It doesn't grind it as fine as I'd like (the big fancy industrial grinders at Costco grind it turkish, which is what I prefer), but it does the job.

My only complaint is that this thing is LOUD. Like, chainsaw loud. Who knew this little machine could make so much noise. My girlfriend says it shouldn't be this loud, and I haven't read the manual to see what the trick is to get it grind more fine grounds (who reads the manual anyway?), but overall, worth the $20.

I bought this grinder in 1992. I can attest to quality and longevity of use. I am thrilled to be buying an exact replacement. It does a really good job of grinding beans (also walnuts) to perfection, very quickly. I also found turning the grinder upside down so that ground material dispenses from the cap is the least messy.

I have owned my Krups 203 grinder since they came in brown (that's a long, long time ago). It still works just as well as when I first bought it. Though it has no bells and whistles or the 2 bazillion grind grades of more expensive models, a little judicious judgment gets me the grind I want for whatever bean I am using including a fine powder. Not overfilling the grinder helps as does putting the beans in the cap then turning the grinder upside down to connect them to avoid spilling the beans. Cleans easily, too, though I heartily recommend UNPLUGGING the grinder before wiping it out with a paper towel. Also, wash the cap with water only just like a coffee pot to avoid adding unwanted soap flavor. The handful of negative reviews that complain of breakage puzzles me as simple as this machine is. (One negative reviewer even claimed it "the coffee it made was very, very hot and weak." which obviously the grinder has nothing to do with the actual brewing.)
Solid buy - Review written on May 29, 2008

Rating: 3 out of 5

+ Small, cheap and efficient. I get a nice grind with no whole beans left in approx. 6-7 seconds. More than sufficient for once-a-day use.

- It can get messy. The coffee grinds accumulate on the cover and along the edge, so when you remove the cover, grinds come out, too. I've taken to opening the grinder over a sink or garbage can.

- It doesn't have great capacity. This isn't a big deal if you're making one travel mug a day, but I suppose it would be a bit tedious to make several cups of coffee.

Overall: The 3-star review means that the product is adequate. Provided that it holds up, I'll be happy with this purchase.

Grinds quickly and very fine. As I like my coffee ground almost to dust for maximum strength. This does a great job. A bit louder than my old Hamilton -Beach. Can do up to a 6-8 cup grind at 1.25 tablespoons to a cup. My TraderJoes coffee is a bit oilier than others, so it does stick some on the bottom as it is ground. Great grinder.

Fresher coffee than a burr grinder - Review written on May 07, 2008

Rating: 4 out of 5
1 customer found this review helpful.

Many times, I have read the snooty hype about why burr grinders are better because they grind coffee with more even particle sizes. So I invested $70 in one, and now it sits unused in my garage. The problem with burr grinders is that they fill up with old, stale coffee that was ground yesterday or the day before. When you use one of these little blade grinders, you save $50 or more, and you always get freshly ground coffee. Who cares about particle sizes? The coffee from one of these blade grinders simply tastes fresher and better.

The only knock against my Krups Fast Touch Coffee Grinder is that it is made cheaply and probably won't last all that long. That doesn't bother me. I can buy three or four of these as they wear out and still save money over the burr grinders.
Great pick for grinding ingredients in small quantities - Review written on May 06, 2008

2 customers found this review helpful.

I cook Indian dishes and often times I come across the need to grind pulses, grains, etc. in very small quantities. My standard size blender used to do a very poor job at this. The ingredients used to settle down at the bottom of the blender jar, in the groove beneath the blades, simply making it impossible for the blades to operate on the ingredients. This appliance is a great fit for such requirements.

Both dry and wet grinding works great with this appliance. I find 200W power to be ample enough to crush pulses anywhere between coarse-grained and fine-grained.

If someone is looking for an appliance to help them with grinding ingredients in small quantities, this appliance is certainly a great candidate to consider.
