Keeps it hot, and keeps it one-handed - Review written on November 16, 2008

The 2 most important features of a travel mug for me are:

Keep my coffee hot for a few hours.

I want to be able to open the lid - drinking port with only 1 hand.

This slick stainless steel (in and out) mug meets both of these requirements. My coffee has stayed hot at least 4 hours, and I can easily operate the lid with one hand while driving.

My only complaint is that the flip lid does not make a leak proof seal when closed. So if this mug should teeter and fall (if not properly secured in a cup holder), it will dribble liquid. If not for this annoyance, I would have given this product 5 stars.
Tumbler leaks horribly!! Don't waste your money - Review written on November 03, 2008

This is horribly made. Tumbler leaked hot coffee all over when tilted. Is not sealed at all around flap that covers drinking hole. You can actually see light through several areas when holding lid up. Don't know why a company would make a cup that was so well insulated but has so many areas on the lid for hot drinks to leak and for your hot drink to get cool. Would not recommend at all.
Solid Thermos Mug for the Road - Review written on October 24, 2008

My wife had gotten me a briefcase Nissan Thermos. It kept the coffee hot BUT was difficult to drink while driving. Instead, I purchased this thermos mug and it has served me well. I can tell that the insulation is not perfect because the top part of the mug becomes warm to the touch, but the coffee stays hot for the 1 hour commute. As the other reviewers have commented, the flip cap can leave coffee on your face if you are not careful. It also leaks a bit at the flip top, but I was not expecting it to be leak proof. It is splash proof, which was what I was looking for. Cleaning is easy. Top is dishwashed. Body is washed with a baby bottle brush (at your local Target, Walmart). There a gray gasket (ring) between the black opening and the metal inside the thermos that needs some extra scrubbing at the seams.
NOTHING BETTER! I WOULDN'T BE WITHOUT ONE - Review written on October 20, 2008

What a joy when you find something that does what it is supposed to do pretty much as well as you could ever expect! I'm on my fourth in 20 years and I've only needed new ones because 1 was stolen from my bike, i lost one and Katrina got one. I've forgotten my morning coffee for as much as 5 hours and it was still better than luke-warm when I finally drank it. It will keep your coffee hot all morning. I've had others and none were even close. I wouldn't be without one.

Still as good as new after one month of almost daily use - Review written on September 25, 2008

On the positive side: it does keep my coffee hot/warm for some time, comes with a nice rubber grip, the size is right.

Some concerns: the cover screws in but the grooves don't always align so you have to be very careful and not force it. The sip hole plug/lever sticks out when in the 'open' position and it could be 'caught' by some piece of clothing or who knows what and cause the tumbler to fall and spill the coffee, it also looks a bit fragile so I'm curious how long it will last - and I will update this review if and when it breaks.

Overall, I am not unhappy with this purchase but I'm not sure I am going to order a second.

Update, one month later.

After one month, it doesn't leak, the coffee keeps staying warm, no signs of wear and tear. I MAY order another one of these or something within this family after all.

great travel mug with few issues - Review written on September 01, 2008

As most people have stated, this cup is a great cup for the car but is not leak-proof. Additionally, that little nubbin (?) in the latch does hold your liquid and dab it on your nose when you start to get to the bottom of the cup. Lastly, for those of you looking for a cup to fit a small European car's holder, this DOES fit the bottom, but is a bit snug (and makes it hard to fit another drink in the side-by-side holders).
Handy lid for inserting a straw - Review written on August 18, 2008

Rating: 5 out of 5

The lid on this cup is easy to clean. The hole in the screw-type lid is large enough to accept and use with any straw without difficulty. This is a fine way to use the cup when driving, allowing you to drink your coffee on the way to work, etc., without taking your eyes off the road. The vacuum-insulated cup keeps your coffee adequately hot for a couple hours. I much prefer this lid design to the Oxo mug lid. The Oxo lid is more spill proof, but it does not accept a straw so you must drink directly from the cup, which is awkward as you get near the bottom of the cup if you're driving; with the Oxo mug, you must tilt the cup upwards while trying to see the road and traffic at the same time. It's also impossible to access all parts of the Oxo's complicated lid for full cleaning.

My husband loves this carrier for his coffee. It will keep coffee hot for at least three hours. It's in the car or in his golf cart every day. Ours is about four years old and holding up very well. It even goes in the dishwasher with no ill effects. At the current price of $17.82 with super saver shipping, it is well worth the cost.

I used this religiously for the past 2 years not having experienced any big problems outside of those mentioned in the previous reviews--the leaking issues, the coffee drip on the nose, etc. I loved that it kept my drink hot for hours--I am not exaggerating!

Well, okay, one little complaint is that it is a bit cumbersome to wash the thing. With all of the little areas that the coffee can sit (from the sloshing around and the liquid settling itself in the different areas on top of the lid or just from drinking it) it is not the easiest to clean. I'm a nut when it comes to cleaning things so when I see that there is stuff stuff in the nooks and crannys of my mug, I can't just let it go. I'll pull out the little bottle brushes, sponges, wash clothes to get the stuff out. No biggie for many people and if you don't care then you read all of this nonsense for nothing! Sorry!

BUT just this morning, the thing started to drip. I looked closely to see where it was coming from thinking that it was just that I hadn't tightened the mug. So I tightened it but it kept dripping! I realized that it was coming from lower part of the mug. The older model had 2 rubber gripping strips going around the mug. Well the bottom strip was loose and that is where the coffee was leaking. Sigh. Yes, it's just a mug but I loved this mug. It kept my drinks super hot for the longest time. The weird thing is that I can't figure out why that rubber gripping would not have been glued on and why it would've affected the mechanics of the cup to where if it became loose, the coffee would start dripping out. Geesh.

But I love the mug so much that I'm going to see if I can contact the manufacturer (Amazon, from what I have heard, has notoriously horrible customer service when it comes to fielding people's complaints--sorry, could be wrong but that is what I heard!) And if they decide that it is normal wear and tear then I'm going to order another one and just assume that I'll have to replace this thing every couple of years. Boo hoo!

If this thing would not have happened it would've gotten the 5 stars that it deserves. But to think that now I'll probably have to fork out another $20 is annoying.
Long Lasting Heat, could spill - Review written on June 13, 2008
* * * *
Rating: 4 out of 5

Provided you pre-heat this with hot water (I just use tap water that's hot) before you pour you coffee, you will have hot coffee all day...if you don't leave the flip-top latch open all day (generally a good practice since it naturally allows the heat to escape).

This thermos would have received 5 stars from me if it didn't spill (though it closes all openings, it will leak out of the latch's hole if tipped sideways, which I'm guilty of doing when my hands are full). The other thing is if your nose touches the latch, your likely to get a small bit of coffee on the tip of it.

I do recommend this if you aren't going to be tipping, but since I do, I'm going to try the OXO one next.
11 Years and Still Going Strong - Review written on May 20, 2008

Rating: 4 out of 5

I have had this mug for 11 years and it's still the best out of all the others I have accumulated along the way. I have bought others that have fancy handles to attach to my bag, ones with non-leak lids, etc. But none have had the ability to keep my drink warm for hours like this one. I sip my coffee and take a long time to drink one cup so this one is perfect for me. The flip top leaks if the cup is dropped, but I will take that risk over having cold coffee an hour after I fill the cup.

My only complaint is that the inside seal around the top has started to allow liquid in causing yucky gunk to build up that is really hard to clean.

best travel mug - Review written on May 19, 2008

Rating: 5 out of 5

I have purchased several of these travel mugs over the years because they really keep my coffee hot...and for a very long time. Other travel mugs, even the stainless steel ones are not insulated so within a short time period, my coffee is cold and undrinkable. This mug keeps my coffee hot all morning so I can sip it slowly while I work and it stays hot like I like it. I put it in the dishwasher (top rack) and it does OK. After a few years, the bottom rubber cover will come un-glued because of that, but it is still a very usable product. I still have my very first purchase of Nissan Travel tumbler. I was so happy when I found it on Amazon -- and cheaper than I paid for the first one I bought.

Great thermos--spill-proof, not leak-proof - Review written on May 02, 2008
* * * * *
Rating: 5 out of 5

I love this thermos! I had been using a plastic one that did not keep my drink warm long enough to finish it, despite being insulated. This one keeps coffee hot for a couple of hours. Even longer if I warm it up with hot water in advance.

The lid does prevent spills when you slosh your beverage around, but if you turn the mug upside down it will leak a lot so I don't advise packing it in a bag or anything. No big deal, nowhere in the description does it claim to be leak-proof. Nissan does have a similar thermos that is advertised as leak-proof--I may try that one next.

Received my first Nissan mug...without the logo...in about 1996 and loved it. Used it for eleven years. It got a little banged up but always kept my coffee hot. Finally, it was looking a little too raggedy and it became apparent that I needed a new one. Had no idea who made it. Requested a new one for Christmas. Received a nice stainless mug...that couldn't keep ANYthing hot. Tried again on my own. Same result. Went on-line and, lo, saw a picture of MY MUG at Amazon. Am happily reunited with what I now know is a Nissan mug and am settling in for the next eleven years.

Pictures just don't do this justice. It looks just like my chocolate gold, and works just as well as the silver models that we've been buying for years. Like having a Sunday-go-to-meeting tumbler. I just feel all dressed up carrying this one around.

We've now bought eight of these, including four for gifts. They just plain work, rare in today's market. Some people don't like the flip top, but it is just fine for us. Most importantly, the insulation is so good that the coffee is pleasantly warm hours later. Works just as well for iced drinks, too.

I bought this mug because it got such great reviews for its non-leakiness. Well, either I got a defective product or Thermos is planting these reviews, because you can pour coffee out of it when the lid is closed. Returned this sucker after one day.

After ten years of daily service, it was time to replace the old Nissan travel mug. Thankfully, the makers haven't changed a thing, and it is still the best practical travel mug around. The old one is still very serviceable, it just shows signs of the hard life it has led, and I just can't bring myself to get rid of it! The new one is unmarked and shiny and, barring loss or accident, I look forward to enjoying my daily jolt from it for years to come.
exactly what I'm looking for - Review written on January 23, 2008

Rating: 5 out of 5

I was looking for the perfect travel mug. Keeps hot drinks hot for a few hours (or a long commute into New York) and cold drinks cold (an even longer ride to the NJ shore)... no leaks or dribbles...fits my car cup holder...with a flip top that stays in place without decorating my nose.

I'm not the fussy type who will preheat my mug and I'm going to wash it in the dishwasher since all sorts of coffee and tea stuff is imbedded in the cracks of the lid by the time I finally get around to washing it.

I tried the mug today and it's exactly what I'm looking for!! So good that I just ordered 4 more and am getting rid of the old leaky plastic ones and the colorful but barely functional Starbucks mugs.

Thanks Thermos or Nissan or whoever actually designed this mug. You've got to appreciate when the small things in life occasionally work out!
Keeps the coffee hot! - Review written on December 31, 2007

I purchased 2 of these for Christmas, one for my husband and one for my son. They used them right away for our 7 hour trip to Iowa, which turned into a 10 hour one because of a snow storm. My husband was so focused on the driving that he didn't take time to drink his coffee, but when he did 3 hours later it was still hot. He said this was the best travel mug he has ever had. The coffee stays hot in the mornings for his train commute to downtown and it has a sturdy bottom to sit it on the floor without tipping over. The only minor complaint is the lid, he says it seems deep and his nose touches the edge. I'm very pleased with my purchase!

If you preheat the tumbler with hot water, then it keeps the liquid pretty hot for a good amount of time, but that is a hassle unless you have a hot water boiler standing by. The top is certainly troublesome since the liquid splashes out when you try to drink it when it is not very full. There is also no way to prevent spills unlike some other design
On second one, fantastic product - Review written on October 07, 2007

As my wife would gladly tell you, I am mildly obsessed with insulated mugs and tumblers. I have had dozens of them from many different vendors, some cheap, some very expensive. I remember one in particular that guaranteed no leaks, and even had a spring mechanism that applied pressure between the lid and the stopper. Eventually, the tension weakened, and it leaked.

This Nissan Stainless tumbler is my favorite of all of the ones I have tried. I had it during college, but lost it, and ended up buying another one after going through many other models. It's not the most leak resistant, but it is the best insulated by far. You can easily leave ice in it overnight and still wake up to ice. I highly recommend it, and plan on getting one for my sister-in-law for Christmas.

I just bought this tumbler and am very disappointed because it leaks alot. When I first saw it, I knew the lid would not work and would drip the liquid out. So I tested it out and sure enough it did leak, and not just in tiny drips. The flip part of the lid which opens to the drinking hole is not even of the same material as the rest of the lid. The flip top is a cheap thin little piece of plastic while the rest of the lid in the heavy matte finished plastic. I don't know why they didn't the flip part using the same materials. I also bought the tea tumbler with the screw-on top. I think that is a better tumbler to buy if you want to carry your drinks around without having to worry about spilling it.

Great thermal mug - Review written on August 06, 2007

Rating: 5 out of 5

This thermal mug does a better job than most keeping things hot or cold. I have owned one for a long time and recently bought two more so I would always have one clean and ready to go.

The only negatives are it should be hand-washed (not a great big deal) and it is leak-resistant, not leak-proof. As long as you keep it in your vehicle cup holder (versus upside down or on its side), you won't have any problems. I have never had a spill.
