QUEEN WHITNEY - Review written on July 30, 2007
Rating: 5 out of 5
Even though Whitney has been in the news in recent years about her several downfalls, including drugs, and her biggest downfall to date, "Bobby Brown", you have to give credit where credit is due, the woman has a God given gift. The cd begins with her biggest hits, "SAVING ALL MY LOVE FOR YOU" to later jams "HEART BREAK HOTEL". Disc 2 is bascially "the remix" some better than others, and some you wish she would have just kept the same; "I'M YOUR BABY TONIGHT!". Overall, the cd is great, its a whole lot better than most of today's music. I have always admire Whitney. She will forever remain one of the best in my book.
Whitney's Greatest Hits?? I don't think so!!! - Review written on February 03, 2007

Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits came out in 2000 (originally supposed to have been released in the late '90s). I bought it hoping it would have the songs of hers that I love. Some of these songs of hers are the originals that are found on Disc 1 and her previous albums, such as: You Give Good Love, Saving All My Love For You, Where Do Broken Hearts Go, and I Will Always Love You. I was really disappointed to find that some of her other songs that I love have been wrongfully remixed to where they are almost unrecognizable. These ones are: I'm Your Baby Tonight, How Will I Know, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, My Love is Your Love, and I think a couple of others (??). In my opinion, it was a crucial mistake for the manufacturers to give these latter songs the remix job. I thought those were the originals, but boy was I wrong!!! The original versions of those latter songs from Disc 2 should have been put on there as is, but not with a totally different sound to them. I was horribly disappointed about that. I have never listened to it since then, as I have made my own GH collection of Whitney's. I don't know what people have been thinking, but I don't think that this is a great album of hers (nothing personal to Whitney, don't get me wrong). This Greatest Hits title would have been an even better one if the originals of the songs from Disc 2 that I mentioned had not have been butchered up. If you want the originals of those several songs, buy the individual albums that they were on before; forget about this title!! The only thing I give credit to regarding this album is the front cover image of Whitney with a drill. WOW!! My final note to all Whitney fans: If you have a CD burner, some blank CDs, and have these albums of hers on CD: Whitney Houston (1985), Whitney (1987), I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990), The Bodyguard Sdtrk. (1992), Waiting To Exhale Sdtrk. (1995), The Preacher's Wife Sdtrk. (1996), and My Love Is Your Love (1998), you can make your own greatest hits or boxset choosing whatever song titles of hers you like from those albums (if you want to), and put this butchered collection to shame. My grade for this album: D- My grade for the picture: A. But my 1 star rating for this album and D- grade for it stand as is.
Don't Blame It On The Boogie - Blame It On The Ballad. - Review written on July 04, 2006

Long dismissing Whitney's muzak as watered down R&B for Caucasians, her pre-hits collection 'My Love Is Your Love' burst like kinetic energy - voice full, grooves in abundance and at-the-core-emotion, plus, unusual for a Houston album, songs you actually wanted to remember [even the Diane Warren ones! Shocking!]. She owed us the soul we've craved for years and finally delivered it. It was her first and only totally listenable collection. The problem we find with the 'Greatest Hits' collection is it's generally soporific first disc. Sub-titled 'Cool Down', it's slathered with much of the mucky, wan balladry she's [in]famous for. With only occasional glimpses of brilliance [e.g. 'Exhale', 'My Love Is Your Love'], sleep your way through disc one, and prepare for the boogie - Disc two is a gay man's Mothership. Subtitled 'Throw Down', it employs today's hottest mixers/producers [e.g. Hex Hector] and squeezes life back into the artistically dead [e.g. Junior Vasquez], resurrecting Whitney's hidden dance diva muse. One major misstep on disc two is the pretentious, overblown 'Star Spangled Banner' from Super Bowl XXI, a dirge that should have been banished to disc one, and it remains the squalor that keeps disc two from the B+ it almost deserves. My grade: Cool Down: C; Throw Down: B; Overall: B-
Whitney's winning moments - Review written on September 10, 2005

I have to be honest, I have never been a big Whitney Houston fan. Growing up gay, I met so many other gay men who loved her, yet I would fawn over Madonna, Kylie or Diana Ross. Although I bought Whitney's albums, I never appreciated her the way I did other artists.
Now as the pop music scene has changed, or in my opinion, debased itself, I realize how much Whitney brought to the music scene. First of all, that voice. Nobody can sing like Whitney - not Celine, not Madonna, not Diana Ross. She has a full-bodied gospel voice that is versatile: one moment it can be light and sexy; the next, strong and powerful. It is definitely missed on radio in an age where many voices sound processed. Secondly, Whitney has adapted well to the changing music sounds, thus, her music has been consistently good.
This collection covers the years from 1985 to 2000 (I am referring to the UK edition). The ballad CD: some of the 80s songs are dated and mechanical, yet Whitney always brought her own style and emotion to these songs. The sad thing is that Whitney's live versions of these songs were always superior, particularly her performance of "One Moment In Time" at the Grammys in the late 80s, and her performance of "I Have Nothing" in South Africa during the Bodyguard-era. The newly discovered "If You Say My Eyes are Beautiful" is a real treat; it would have been a big hit if it had been released in 1986. It was a perfect ballad for the time period, and Whitney and Jermaine Jackson made a fine pairing. The new duets with Deborah Cox and Enrique Iglaesias are less interesting. Whitney's voice is not at its peak in these songs.
The dance CD is excellent, featuring mostly all the original versions of her popular up-tempo tracks including some bonus remixes. Whitney could always deliver on the dance floor, particularly her version of Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman" and the beloved remix of "It's Not Right But It's Ok", a perfect song to show Whitney's sassy side.
This is a generous compilation, topped off with that fabulous cover photo of Whitney adorning her walls with her own gold records. Highly recommended (particularly the UK edition).

I love Whitney Houston and have loved her music since the 80's when I heard How Will I Know playing all the time! I bought the studio albums of Whitney Houston, Whitney, I'm Your Baby Tonight and The Bodyguard Soundtrack and love them all! I bought this American version of The Greatest Hits because I already have the album/radio versions of songs like How Will I Know, So Emotional, I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me), I'm Your Baby Tonight, and Love Will Save The Day! Why would I want to buy a greatest hits with album versions that I already own on CD instead of rare dance mixes? I actually listen to club mixes while working out so it's cool to have these dance mixes! Now, if you don't own any of Whitney's studio albums and just love the album/radio versions of the song, then buy the U.K. version. But for me, I have a variety.
My favorite all time song from Whitney is How Will I Know!! It's just such an amazing song to dance to!! And I love the music video that went along with it also!! I also love Saving All My Love For You, Greatest Love Of All, So Emotional which is an awesome upbeat song, I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) which is another favorite upbeat song, If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful which is such a breathtakingly beautiful ballad with Jermaine Jackson and it's SO romantic, I Love it!!! I am so happy that One Moment In Time and The Star Spangled Banner are here too because they are so beautiful as well! Run To You, I Have Nothing, and I Will Always Love You are ballads from The Bodyguard Soundtrack that I love a lot and love singing along to. The song Same Script, Different Cast which I love also, samples Beethoven's Fur Elise which isn't mentioned in the CD booklet but really SHOULD HAVE been because you HAVE to give credit to the person who composed the music! I don't mind artists sampling another person's music, AS LONG AS they give proper credit!!!
All At Once, You Give Good Love, Where Do Broken Hearts Go, All The Man That I Need, and My Love Is Your Love are more favorites of mine. I love all the upbeat songs and dance mixes on CD 2! If I Told You That features George Michael and it's really cool. This is a perfect CD to listen to in the car when your driving!
I recommend this CD to anyone who already has Whitney's studio albums and would like the club mixes. If you just like the radio versions and couldn't care less about club mixes, then just get the U.K. version. This is definitely an awesome collection of Whitney's hits and for me, the song If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful, is a definite reason that I love this CD because since I already owned 99% of the ballads on here, it's such a beautiful addition that I didn't have!
And I have to recommend the Music Video DVD for Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits! I own the DVD that has ALMOST ALL of Whitney's videos that were shown on MTV and VH1, A MUST HAVE for Whitney fans!!!!
The #1 Diva - Review written on June 29, 2005

Whitney Houston is the finest vocalist in history, she kicks Mariah Carey's flabby butt. Disc 1 of this chronicle of her magnificent career is "Cool Down-The Ballads". My fav Whitney ballads are "Greatest Love of All", "Run To You", "I Have Nothing", "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" and, of course, the incomparable "I Will Always Love You". On Disc 2, "Throw Down", my fav songs are "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody". All hail Ms. Houston, the golden diva!
