This Game is very old, but the Game it self still stands as an inovation in the 3D FPS world. It's Level's and Total MODability stand next to none at the time and it's ability to handle out door areas with viers height where amazing.

I really was fond of this game and when I saw I could get another copy to replace the one that i lost i had to jump on it. But it's an old Game with dated graphics.

This game has awesome graphics for its time, and runs flawlessly on almost any system. If your going to run this game on a dated system, make sure you have a good graphics card (like an ATI rage Pro, Nvidia TNT 2, or Voodoo 2) and a decent sound card. Again, the graphics are absolutely incredible on high detail, 1024x768 or higher, and the sound will blow your mind, especially on 5.1 surround sound. On the highest settings, the graphics are almost compareable to UT2004. The story line is great and the gameplay is very good. The intense multiplayer is sweet, and is where the idea for the original Unreal Tournament came from. Also, Unreal is the first game to have such enviormental features as waterfalls, and birds that you can shoot. This is my all time favorite game because of its shear fun. The weapons are unique and awesome, and both the multiplayer and singleplayer maps are beautiful and well designed. The story mode takes a bit to get into, but once you get ten minutes into it, you can't put it down. The only negative is the skill of the bots in botmatch. You can't really practice if you cant even go near a bot without literally being blown to pieces, let alone kill them. Aside from that minor setback, this is the best game ever made!

A game with fast pace FPS play. The graphics are excellentas is the audio.
Play this on a full blown comp system and let your senses run wild! The weaponry is superb. From the Shield Gun to the Redeemer I was impressed with all the capability that each weapon has. But the most awesome part of this game is the beautiful graphics. The beauty of the Takara Rainforest is just one of the amazing worlds to see and experience. So grab a hand full of mayhem generating weaponry and slaughter all in your path.

By all standards, this is now a very old single player game. However it is not to be set aside lightly. The graphics are very good (They were the cutting edge back in the day)considering the game design is over 10 years old. It says a lot about the quality of the program that this game got to be over 10 years old and it still gets great reviews. This is the GOLD version which is an update and advance on the original game. It just got better ...more chapters, more bad guys to shoot. The game plot and action is fun! (Way fun, really!) I have been through this game multiple times over the years and I still enjoy pulling this game out from time to time and "Shooting some bad guys". This is a good game to pull out on a rainy day and let the kids play. Old school or not it has enough in it to amuse even the hardest core game player. If there is a down side to this game it has to be that it is so totally adictive. Beware and Enjoy!

Well, I got the game and I was able to play untill one day the game ran scratchy and I had to uninstall it, but wouldn't load back up. The stupid file called "QueenEnd.unr"(I know alot about computers),always said "The source media may be bad" So I'm looking foward to reordering the game, in the meantime, I'll wait for my Unreal Action Figures to come in the mail.

This game, already several years old, remains my favorite computer game. I just love everything about this game: the weapons, the storyline, the graphics, even the music! Unreal Gold is actually divided into two different "mission packs" (both included on this cd): First, Unreal, then Return to Na Pali.

The plot of Unreal is pretty simple: you're a prisoner that has just escaped from a huge space craft that's crashed landed on a mysterious planet, filled with just about every kind of evil creature you could possible imagine! Now, you must bravely fight your way through literally dozens of challenging levels, both on land and in water, in your search to find a servicable space ship you can use to escape.

Different levels challenge different fears: you have to go underwater and face large reptile-like creatures and man-eating fish (and that's just for starters!), fight large spiders in totally dark rooms, and walk on the edges of cliffs and along narrow bridges (one slip and you've had it, buddy!). The villians get increasingly more intelligent and harder to kill as the game progresses, but your weapons also get increasingly better! You can choose four different levels of difficulty: easy, medium, hard, and "unreal"(-only for the bravest of the bave!). I recommend playing the game on easy mode until you get the hang of things.

After you finally win Unreal, you get to play "part 2": Return to Na Pali, in which you get to return to the same evil planet you just escaped from (oh boy!) and face even tougher villians as you try to find a crashed spaceship and its important cargo. Return to Na Pali wasn't quite as difficult as Unreal, although there are two extremely tough levels where you have to walk on slippery ice constantly while facing enemies and treacherous cliffs! In short, Unreal Gold is an awesome game that will challenge and entertain you like no other pc game! And yes, this game works great on computers with Windows XP. Highly recommended!

I've been playing Unreal Gold for the past couple years. Not only has it grown onto me, but for those who appriciate a godo game, here's my favorite details:

Excelent music which you'll never forget, amazing worlds of all kinds, ranging from huge spacecraftst to peaceful villages, and enough weapons to live in trigger happy heaven. Interesting concepts, challenging missions, completely unreal animals and races, tons of surprises, terrifying at times and rediculously fun at others. Useing a translator you can read the journals of those who did not survive along the journey, and signals or messages. There are available simple cheats which can be fun at times. There's always fun in a little god mode and weapon summoning right?

In my opinion, I'm fascinated by this game. It has an overall great atmosphere, although not the greatest plot it's still appealing. You suffer no save points, no bosses at the end of every level, no telling you you can't go somewhere or do something - this game just lets you play. This is my favorite of all the Unreal series. It'll grow onto you like the video game classics. (By the way I can't emphasize how cool the soundtrack is!)

Unreal Gold is a packaged version of both the original Unreal and its expansion. For its price, it is a great value. And it's even better if you do not play multiplayer games cause the other released version, Totally Unreal features Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament, which is a wonderful multiplayer game. If you do not play multiplayer games, then buy this Gold edition. If you do, spend the extra money and get Totally Unreal. Or even better yet, get Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal 2, and Totally Unreal for the most unreal experience ever!

Unreal was originally released to be a DOOM killer back in DOOM's prime time, but the entire project was screwed up, so it ended up getting released in 1998. The GRAPHICS of Unreal were unsurpassed at the time. No one could match it. Although today, it can be matched, 1998 was the time of Starcraft, so from there you can get a view on how much superior it was than back ago. Graphics: 9/10

The sound in the beginning of the game is pretty good. Although it is a bit scary at first when you hear blood-curdling screams while you try to escape from a prison ship and when you are about to get off, you see a heart fly out of a door way, it is all covered by excellent sound. The music is also pretty good. Not excellent, but still good enough. Sound: 8/10

In Unreal, you have to read a lot of text. You get a translator in the beginning and from then you read a LOT of text to reveal that you are on Na Pali and the Skaarj Empire has taken over. Story: 8.5/10

Unreal is fun, kinda gory, but overall, a grat experience if you have not played it before. Be sure to get Unreal Tournament 2003 and Unreal 2 for the PC and Unreal Championship for the XBOX for an "unreal" experience! Enjoy!

I bought Unreal Gold a couple of months ago. The graphics were the first thing that I noticed. Beautiful scenery which changes from indoors to outdoors continually. The music changes in light of the scenery and what you would be feeling like if you were actually there, a newly 'released' prisoner on a new planet, surrounded by beauty and the unknown.. The story line kept me hooked. The plot sped up as my skills did and the challenges were rewarded. Each level was better and better. I love the rusted look to the guns. The feeling of age and mystery to the scenes this creates is compelling. The translator messages you get from the people are enough to create the plot and get you hooked into the feelings of the people as they must have been dying, out on a cold planet killed by an unstoppable, unknown alien. It feels like you really are there. It's wonderful.

Buy it!

I had to go out and buy Unreal Tournament Game of the Year after this. It is also amazing although completely different. I cannot wait until the new ones come out. I am upgrading my PC, getting DSL and getting a new joystick so that I can play UNREAL online, where it is even heavier. ENJOY!

Graphically stunning, but not quite up to Half-Life for gameplay. I very much enjoy the multiplayer aspects of the game, a lot more than the single player. If you're a die-hard FPS player, go for it. If you want to blow up your friends on line, get Unreal Tournament. If you don't care for FPSs, why are you reading this?

Unreal is a first person shooter with an great single player gameplay and built on an eye candy engine. The story you are a prisoner and you are transported in a spaceship. The ship crashes on a strange unreal planet which looks medieval and futuristic. The inhabittens of the planet the nalis are attacked by the skaarj warriors, The skaarj are very advanced in technology than the nalis. You have to battle the skaarj, Get help from the nalis and escape from the island. The Level design is fantastic but quite difficult expecially the boss levels because of weak weapons. Levels are very beautifully and very well done, The second level when you walk out of the spaceship and take your first look at the strange world is very creatively and very well done. Unreal is built on a very beautifull engine and many games use that engine for their games. The main menu and the advanced menu is very good and very easy to use. I played unreal on the Direct3D video mode and it runs very smooth. The graphics are fantastic, They look great even today. Beautifull sky with birds flying, Water that ripples and fishes swimming in it. For almost every level you could see new types of water, skies and textures. The AI is very good though far from perfect it is much better. On the downside i found the weapons very dull and boring, They should have been more powerfull and more creativily done. Unreal is one of the most beautifull game i have ever played, It is a great game for action game lovers.

Unreal is Forever (even if it looks a bit aged) - Review written on September 20, 2001

Rating: 4 out of 5

Well, first let me tell you that I am a major FPS gamer. Half-Life, Unreal, UT, all that good stuff. So when I bought Unreal I was expecting a lot, and I got just a little bit disappointed. But first let me tell you that the game looks great: it looks and runs better than Half-Life, has a great engine, and for 1998 is impressive as hell. The AI is great. The weapons are just right. And the levels (espically second) are pretty good. But then again, having played 'modern' (1999-2001) FPS I was kind of disappointed at the lack of features I take for granite. Like a weapons system that goes both ways, just not one. Having to change items and crap. And the level architexture (espically in the third and part of the second [which is the best looking level]) really sucks. I hate the big, bulky levers. The lack of any speech. And the second enemies... So what I am really saying is that the beginning of the game is kinda slow, but it gets better. If you love UT get this game. It's great.
It's..............unreal!! - Review written on July 18, 2001

Rating: 5 out of 5

I love this game! I love it to the point I once actually stopped playing it because I was depressed about the poor Nalis getting slaughtered...

This game is a classic that most new first person shooters will be compared to now and in the future. The only problem I really have is that there isn't much variation in enemies, it's brutes, then Skaarj, then Terrans, then Titans, rinse and repeat. Oops! I forgot the serpent people. That's five compared to over 15 in Turok 2.

That and the fact that all the weapons have an aged, worn down look to them, for example, the Flak Cannon looks all rusted, whereas in UT it's all polished and shiny. Of course, I suppose it makes sense considering it sat there for god knows how long (hypothetically of course).

No matter what though, I still love the game, even after a couple years of intense play. And until Unreal 2, I'll have to settle for this even if I didn't like it.

I have never enjoyed playing a game as much as this one. Then, upon playing it, I realized that there were actually two different games on one disc. So, we got two games at a fraction of what it was worth, and I made sure that others in my neck of the woods knew about it. Five of six people that I told about it went out and purchased this game. It was a little difficult in places, or I just wasn't paying attention, but was greatly satisfied with my purchase. I think that you will be also. Plenty of blood, gore, screams of pain, and the dialogue and story line is easy to follow. Need more games like this one.

This game is awesome.Unreal will almost make you believe that it is Unreal. The story starts when your prsoner ship, Vortex Rikers, crashes on an undiscovered planet called Na Pali.At first your goal is to escape. But then, you must help save the Nali from enslavement and there aggressors, the Skaarj. You progress the planet looking for a craft. When the adventure concludes, you must defeat the Nali's missile launching Demonlord,Daimon,at Nali Castle. Then you progress to the Mothership to assassinate the Skaarj Queen and use her private escape pod to flee the planet.

Return to Na Pali was pathetic.Your escape pod is recruited by the crew of Bogeda Bay, another spaceship. You are forced to find a crashed ship and recover the elusive weapon logs from the wreckage. When you call for backup, they send in Marines to kill you because you are a security risk to the weapon project. You elude your killers and must progress the planet once more to find a nearby Marine post, and their space shuttle because it is your only escape. In the end,you get awaywith the logs, and Bogeda Bay is destroyed by one of their own missiles.

Altogether a great game...

I picked up Unreal Gold recently for $10 dollars at a local computer store. Upon loading the game and firing it up I was totally devastated by its graphics and gameplay. In short this game is phat!!

Unreal Gold is the retail package that contains the full version of Unreal and its mission pack. For a mere $10 dollars you get one of the best gaming experiences to ever grace the PC. The latest version is patched to 226b, so stability is not an issue. The game is coded to run accelerated on Glide or Direct3D. I'm running the game on a Pentium III 850MHz processor with 256MB of RAM and a 64MB GeForce2 Ultra video card with anti-aliasing enabled. Naturally the game runs smoothly, even with 32-bit color selected and a screen resolution of 1024x768.

Which brings me to the system requirements: you'll want to have at least a Pentium II class processor and 64MB of RAM available. The game will run lesser machines but I recommend a 3D graphics card in those cases to handle the video chores.

Basically, Unreal puts you in the roll of a prisoner whose crash landed on a world run by reptilian creatures called the Skaarj. Your goal is survival: you run around in one of the most beautiful game engines on the planet and take out the enemy.

Unreal has to be seen to be believed. The graphics and gameplay are excellent and anyone whose interested in first-person shooters needs to have this in their collection. Believe me your collection is not complete without it.

Truly Wondrous! - Review written on February 22, 2001

Rating: 5 out of 5

Wondrous is the word that best describes Unreal! Showcasing the best 1st-person engine of its kind and graphics that totally blew away anything of its time,Unreal stands as a monoment to what the PC can do.

Never before have I played a game with such an immersing storyline without a single word being spoken to me. That's it! There are no NPCs! There is no interaction! Yet you totally become your character. IT is amazing how much detail from the glorious outdoor scenes like the paradise waterfall to the minute detail of prisoners in their cell.

With each hallway, corridor, ravine, and door, you are pulled onto the edge of your seat and not released as you fight your way through the planet filled with legitimately scary alien races who take utter glee out of torturing and destroying other races. It is very intense!

This is a must for people who like games! If you like 1st person shooters, this will top your list! If you don't like 1st-person shooters, YOU WILL LIKE THIS ONE!

A total success. Bravo!

As other reviews of this game have mentioned, Unreal is phenomenal! Of the first person shooters I've played, this one is way better than most. The amazingly rich environments suck you deep into the plight of the peaceful Nali and the cruel world of their oppressors. When you awaken in your cell, you are alone, the bodies of your shipmates bloodied and lifeless. Many are torn in two. Sirens and garbled voice recordings break the uneasy silence, as you crawl through the battered remains of the ship, only to find that you are the sole survivor, lost on a planet full of hostile beings intent on your demise. That is only the beginning, though. Your travels to escape the planet will lead you through many varied locations that are very easy to differentiate from one another, each one more visually stunning than the last. That is definately one of Unreal's strong points. The brilliant designers do not allow for the levels to become tediously repetitive. Each environment has it's own personality. Another strong point, and perhaps most important, is the enemy. Long gone are the days of Doom when enemies would simply stand their ground, and trade fire with you. These enemies are much more cunning than that. They will use cover, snipe at you from high perches, duck fire, dodge and even call for back-up if neccessary. Some of your enemies will even try to draw you into traps and ambushes. As another reviewer noted, this is a first-person-perspective game. It is NOT Tomb Raider. Tomb raider never drew you in to the point where you would actually jump in front of your monitor as an enemy soldier dropped though a sky light, only to land within a few feet of you, guns blazing. With Unreal, you do, it's that enthralling. This game is exceptionally challenging and rewarding, making most shooters pale in comparison. I was most impressed with the dramatic lighting, ambient sound and music, utilized to it's full potential, making this lengthy epic bristle with life and tension. This is an ideal purchase for anyone who does'nt already have this classic in their library. You can take or leave the included expansion pack, as it simply doesn't offer much more variety to the original experience, but don't over-look this title due to it's now ridiculously low price. For unparalleled on-line battle, check out Unreal tournament. But for one-player off-line mayhem, it doesn't get any better than this.

seriously guys... this is the BEST- i mean- BEST game you can buy. The graphics and AI of the enemies are incredible. The way water (there are countless types (everything from murky to clear) reflects off walls and torches glow, the sounds, the sky is breath taking. (if you could see the cliff in level two you'd understand) everything is simply amazing. I couldnt get enough of it. The story line is simple, but good enough, and you move through TONS of different environments including castles on cliffs, underground, villages, outer-space, canyons, broken-down and spaceships. Another added touch mentioned over again is the complexity of the enemies. They dont all die or act the same. It depends where you shoot them and there are tons and tons of variations of how the bad guys act.

Many people think Unreal Tournament is better, it is good, but cant be compared because the games are so different. Tournament is a multiplayer-type game. Unreal is a run through levels to get out type game. They are both excellent.

Back to Unreal, I had heard about this game from some gaming magazine before it had come out and it talked about how it was going to be the BEST game ever dealing with graphics and such. I had it set on defaults so it would run smoothest and it still was truly the most amazing thing i had ever seen on a computer screen. Adding the special graphics not set in defaults made it even better. I seriously could not get enough. It has absolutely awesome guns (flak cannon rules) and some really wicked bad guys that are actually hard to kill (dodge bullets, run to get friends) and can think, unlike most games (doom, duke nukem)

There is only one downfall, that may not even be a downfall. It is in first-person view-you only see the gun. I absolutely love Tomb Raider based soley on the fact that it is in third-person. As a result, you cant climb on stuff ect. I would never play tomb raider if Unreal was in thrid-person.

That aside, it really was amazing. All i can say is buy it at any cost. I got it right away when it came out for 40.. it is now 10 i think.. pocket change. Get it.. you will not look at anyother game the same again.. i guarentee it.

I have been aware of Unreal's existence for quite a while since my roommate had played it and said he enjoyed it, but I only got around to playing it the Fall of 2000. And it debuted in early 1998. So why did I go back and play this when I could have easily picked up a newer title? Simple: this game is AMAZING. I have a fast system (800 Mhz, 256 MB Ram), but when I played this game, I was using a voodoo 3 2000 video card, which is certainly was not top of the line (can be found for around $50). I was able to run this game with 1024x768 resolution and high graphics detail with NO SLOWDOWN. It looked incredible! People would come in and ask if I was using the FSAA on my voodoo 5 (a special graphic enchancing feature on a high end approx. $200 card). It just looked that good! But we all know looks can't make a game fun. This game has some of the smartest AI programmed for adversaries ever. They will strafe, roll, and duck out of the way of your shots, making them tricky to defeat. And in addition, the placement of the enemies made me jump on many an occasion, the sound effects were BRILLIANT and the music changed as the environment around you changed to keep it in the perfect mood. Buy this game, it is an EXCELLENT addition to any gamer's arsenal!

The main difficulty I have with Unreal Gold is certainly not the low price, but the low graphics. See, I have to run it in Software Mode. Sure I "only" have a two year old Pentium II DELL R350, with 128 SDRAM and an S3 Graphics card with 32 meg, but this game should have a patch for this game to run in something other than software mode. My suggestion: Stick with Unreal Tournament--an awesome single or multiplayer game and avoid this Unreal Gold--which ain't real gold, only fool's gold.

Sure it's a violent shooter game. So what? It's still fun, and isn't that all that matters? Unreal Gold collects together the original Unreal series: the original game, the expansion pack "Return to Nai Pali", and a bonus feature on the semi-sequel, Unreal Tournament. The original game is absolutely astounding. Set in a distant future, you are a prisoner on board the prison ship Vortex Rikers, en route to a prison colony. Along the way, something happens and your ship crashes onto a distant planet. As you make your way through the game, the plot begins to take shape. Apparently, sometime ago the peaceful Nali, the original inhabitants of this planet, were enslaved by the glactic thug species known as the Skaarj. Nai Pali is the planet version of the Bermuda Triangle, as many other ships have crashed here besides your own. Escape becomes your goal, as the Skaarj posess the only shuttles that can escape the planet's gravity. The graphics are simply mind-blowing, so I recommend a 3DFX graphics card, like the Voodoo 2 or better. The gameplay is intense, so be sure you have a good processor for this. It was released a few years ago, but if you have a recent computer you won't have any troubles. Another plus to this collection is that if you bought the two games seperately, it would cost double what you pay for the collection, and who doesn't like saving money?
