Pretty good, but not their best. - Review written on March 30, 2008

This is the album with "Drive" and "Stellar," the two songs that sky-rocketed Incubus to stardom. If you're new to Incubus or played Guitar Hero 1, I guess this is a decent place to start.
Some fans say that this is where the band "sold out," even if that's not the case at all. Incubus has become more "radio-friendly" from this record on, but the quality of their music hasn't diminished one bit. With "Make Yourself," the band further refined its sound and put out their most consistent record yet.
Every track is catchy and well-written, with awesome choruses, memorable verses and all sorts of great music behind Brandon's ever-evolving vocals. I think they've done better, but there's no question that "Make Yourself" is a pivotal album in the Incubus discography.
My favorite Incubus cd. - Review written on July 17, 2007
Rating: 4 out of 5
This is the ultimate Incubus album because it has the best mix of all the different elements that make this band. It has some aggressive rockers, some trippier, softer songs, and scratching is prevalent too.
Check out the hit songs: "Privilege", "Drive", "Stellar", and "Pardon Me", but really, this is the best of their albums from start to finish. I think there are only two songs I don't care for.
"Pardon Me" is one of my favorite songs of the late 90s. To me, that song is the best that Incubus has written.

This album is far dirtier, but not to be confused with darker, than I imagined it would be. For that I am very greatful and this album rules! However, there are other reasons this is great. Sure, I love the song Make Yourself, but there are other sides of this, too. There is no song quite as thrashing as Megalomaniac here but there is also no song as lame as Circles here. What it does have is thooughtful hits like Drive. It also has weird techno-style artwork, sweet turntable action (especially in it's own scratch track Battle...), an infectious voice, some dirty lyrics, and singable lyrics like "you better not blink or breathe cuz you never know what's commin' around the bend". Most of all, more lively than the follow-up to this (Morning View).

Im more of the person who reviews it based on letter grades, so....
Privilege - A
Great way to open a CD. More of a SCIENCE song than the steriotypical new Incubus.
Nowhere Fast - A-
One of the first Incubus songs I'd ever heard. Always caught onto me. Great Bridge and Drums
Consequence - B-
Maybe my least favorite song on the CD. Guitar part bugs the crap outa me.
The Warmth - B+
Sick song. Adds a sort of dark side to the CD.
When it Comes - B
A pretty cool song, but it isnt the kind of song that i choose to listen to. I let it slide in with the CD
Stellar - A
I hated this song at first, but I have really changed my mine since. Guitar part is impossible as heck to play, and it just has a cool rhythm to it.
Make Yourself - A-
This was the song that got me to like this CD. It was the first one I listened to, and its just a cool song.
Drive - B
Overplayed. It's a good song and all, but it just gets boring.
Clean - B
Another one of those songs that just never caught onto me. Its ok though.
Battlestar Scralatchtica - B+
A Great jam song. Amazing scratching by Kilmore.
I Miss You - B
Blah. Soft side of Incubus that bores me.
Pardon Me - B
One of my least favorites for some reason. This song is so much better played live and acoustic, but it just isnt that good on the CD.
When it Comes - A+
Favorite song on the CD. Hard rock song with great lyrics.
Overall, good CD

....I have found that Incubus' masterpiece "Make Yourself" is much more of an obscure Progressive Metal album than a Nu-Metal album. Take some deep listens into this album, and you will see that the musical progression of each song fits perfectly into the moniker of Progressive Metal, with a lot of funk, Hip Hop and Nu-Metal tossed into the mix. Each song progresses with perfection and every note played is placed in just right. Even Brandon Boyd's amazing vocals are progressive, as is the concept of the album, which is making yourself out of your own ideas, thoughts and beliefs, not letting the Government, Authorities and the world shape what you believe and feel.
The guitar riffs are intricate and amazing, as is the funky bass lines and the tight drumming. The DJ adds much atmosphere and ambience to the record as well.
Brandon's vocals are superb, having a wide range and deep metaphoric lyricism.
I took this album for granted ever since I first picked it up, but in the new perception that I am in now, I appreciate it much more. I feel that it takes time for the true goodies hidden in the compositions of this album to come to the surface, and a face value listen won't reveal anything beyond a great "Nu-Metal/Rock/Funk" record.
I think this is Incubus at their finest(which many would argue with, citing "Science" as their best. True, I feel that Science is amazing as well and shows elements of Progression, but its "Make Yourself" where they reach their pinnacle).
Do yourself a favor and pick this album up, if you can get past the whole Nu-Metal Stigma, you will find a true gem that is worth many repeated listens.
The best alternative rock CD ever! - Review written on June 23, 2006

This is by far the best Incubus album and in my opinion, the best alternative rock album, period. The opening track, "Privelage", starts off as a fun, fast paced song that makes a great opener for the entire album. "Nowhere Fast" is a good follow up track that is still very alternative and very catchy. "The Warmth" is an absolutely amazing song. This song really stands out because the guitar notes and the tune are so beautiful, it can send a chill down your spine. Any song that can give me cold chills down my spine is a keeper. "Steller" is another song that can send a chill down one's spine and is also a very catchy song. "Drive" is kind of a "poppy" tune, but in a good way (meaning, it's catchy). "I Miss You" is probably the weakest track on the album, but still not a bad song. "Pardon Me" is a track driven by pure, raw emotion and a really great song.
What makes this disc so great is that I can listen to it from beginning to end without skipping tracks. Also, unlike Linkin Park, Incubus does not get old. My musical tastes have changed and developed a lot over the last several years, but I skill love this album. I bought this Cd two years ago and liked it then, but over time it has actually grown on me even more and now I like it better every time I listen to it. If you want to listen to one dimensional music that will get old quickly, listen to Linkin Park, Puddle of Mudd, or Drowning Pool. But if you like music that is deep, creative, emotionally powerful, and best of all, won't get old, listen to Incubus.
Still my favorite INCUBUS album - Review written on April 27, 2006

THE BAND: Mike Einziger (guitar), Brandon Boyd (vocals & percussion), Jose Pasillas (drums), Dirk Lance (bass), Chris "DJ" Kilmore (turntables).
THE DISC: (1999) 13 songs clocking in at approximately 48 minutes. The disc contains a 6-page foldout with song titles and lyrics, obscure head shot pictures of each band member, and thank you's. Label - Sony/Epic.
COMMENTS: The band's earlier albums ("Enjoy Incubus", "Fungus Amongus", "S.C.I.E.N.C.E.") were hard rocking, funky, hip hopping fun... but most days I have to be in the mood to listen to any of these early Incubus discs. "Morning View" (2001), the album that came after this one, is excellent... and, as good as it is, I still hear "sellout" from fans and reviewers alike. I still rate "Morning View" right behind "Make Yourself" as far as polished musicianship goes... both are amazing albums. However, if I have to choose one album of Incubus to take with me on a trip, "Make Yourself" is the one. "Drive" - their first big hit is here, and as good as it is, it's pale in comparison to the rest of the album. In the same vein is track 11, "I Miss You", both are soft rocker ballads (if you will) and deserving of radio airplay. They're also safe songs... nothing about them are in your face, jump up and down, gotta move and shake. This is the first time that Incubus has shown a soft side... and it works. I've always felt that singer Brandon Boyd sings with such great emotion. If you've ever been to one of their concerts or have seen their "Morning View Session" DVD, you'll instantly know what I mean. All other 11 songs on "Make Yourself" are faster rocking alternative tunes. Mature, slick and polished song writing. This is the album where the band put it all together. Absolute favorite tracks are "The Warmth", "Nowhere Fast", "Consequence", "Stellar", "Clean", Pardon Me". There is no filler on "Make Yourself" (with the exception of the scratch instrumental "Battlestar Scralatchtica")... but this song somehow fits in with the mood of the album. Start your Incubus collection here (5 stars).

When I listened to the sample songs on amazon.com for the "Make Yourself" album, I knew I had to get this CD when I heard the song "Drive." Needless to say, it was a good choice to get the album. I listened to Morning View and A Crow Left of the Murder before this one, so my expectations were a little different, but overall, Make Yourself is a good album to have and to listen to.
One of the things I like about Incubus is their diversity in their songs; sure, the majority of the songs on Make Yourself are rock songs, but some songs on here display how the band tried to experiment with different genres. Songs like "I Miss You," "Battlestar Scralatchtica," "Stellar," and "Drive," just to name a few.
Privilege is one of my favorite tracks on the album. I dunno why, but I like how the vocals sound when the track hits the "Find Yourself a Back Door" part. Very good song. 9/10
Nowhere Fast is also a good song. Like Privilege, this one is a rock track. Although it does have a few slow moments in it, it then picks up with a fast beat again. 8/10
Consequence has nice lyrics. This track shows what it is like to be punished for something you've done, and is not a bad song at all. 8.5/10
The Warmth tells you not to be turned off by the jerks of society, and instead encourages you to hang with the nicer people. Good lyrics, in my opinion, and a good beat. 8.5/10
When it Comes is another hard rock song, except a little steadier than the other rock songs on this CD. Not much else to say about it. 8/10
Stellar is an amazing-sounding song. Listen to Echo on the Morning View album and you'll hear what I mean. There is nothing else to say about Stellar except that it is a great-sounding song with good vocals and lyrics. 9/10
The actual Make Yourself song...is a bit tricky to review. Half of it has lyrics that tell you to be yourself by "making yourself." It has a good beat as well. The only thing that bothers me about this song is the constant use of the "f"-word throughout the song...this word doesn't even make sense in this song. But overall it isn't a bad track. 8/10
Drive is undoubtedly the best song on the CD! It has amazing vocals, lyrics, beat, etc. Everything about it is amazing. you know those instances in which you have a favorite song on a CD? This is one of those instances. I listened to the Drive sample right here on Amazon, and that was my reason for getting the album. Everything about the song is perfect. You should buy the CD just for this purpose.
The lyrics explain why it is important to not let your fears "drive you", and that you should "take the wheel." AMAZING song! 10/10
Clean is a song with interesting, yet good, lyrics. The lyrics explain how someone tries to use insults, yet the insults always come out unharmful. Other than that, this song is a rock track. 8/10
Battlestar Scralatchtica is an instrumental songs portraying the full talent of the turntablist, and is quite amazing. This is another instance in which incubus experiments with their sound. 8/10
"I Miss You" is, in my opinion, a song with some of the best lyrics on the CD. It is also steady-paced and flows smoothly. The vocals are also nice. 9/10
"Pardon Me" shows some fast-paced vocals, and they sound difficult to pull off. Its lyrics also hold some meaning. 8.5/10
Out from Under is the song with the heaviest beats in it on the whole Make Yourself album. it is also my least favorite track, because in my opinion the lyrics don't make much sense ("To resist is to p*ss in the wind, anyone who does will end up smelling"). 7/10
My overall score for this album is 4/5 because of the strength of tracks such as Drive, Stellar, Privilege, and Consequence. I would have given it another star if it had used the bad language less, and if Down from Under had different lyrics, and if Make Yourself had a few different lyrics in later parts of the song. But meh...those are only a few slight flaws. Pay attention to all the positive stuff about this album and buy it, because it is worth your money.

Why not try and Make Yourself? That's the question Brandon gives his audience on the title track. Incubus has never ceased to amaze me. I love all of their releases, i even have a large place in my heart for Fungus Amongus. This cd is no exception, it is every bit as good as their other cd's. I have still yet to decide which one of their albums is my favorite, mostly depends on my mood. Make Yourself takes the S.C.I.E.N.C.E. quirky funk side and blends it with their next cd Morning View, and has a little dab of something different.
1.Privilege 10/10...A fun funky opener, and i love the guitar, one of my favorites from the beginning.
2.Nowhere Fast 9/10...Another heavier song with a great intro. The chorus is great, good song.
3.Consequence 9/10...Consequence follows suit with the previous, another average rocker that is somehow not lost in the shuffle and making itself (no pun intended) a great song.
4.The Warmth 10/10...Another one of my favorites. A much darker softer song, but it's so great and has great lyrics, a classic.
5.When It Comes 9/10...Basically falls in with 2 and 3, another rocker that is great.
6.Stellar 8.5/10...I was never a huge fan of this song, but it has definitely grown on me. I love the soft verses and how the chorus kicks in out of nowhere.
7.Make Yourself 10/10...Wow. The beginning sounds like a lostprophets song for some reason but that's where the similarites end. This is one of Incubus' more in your face songs and it is so good. Very rockin' and simply put good.
8.Drive 8/10...After approximately 9 million listens i'm still not sick of this song. Although on first listen the rating would be much higher but probably Incubus' biggest hit until they die.
9.Clean 10/10...One of my all time favorite Incubus songs. The bongos in the beginning serve as a nice intro. This is one of the heavier ones on the album and the chorus is one of my favorites.
10.Battlestar Scratchlactica 8/10...A turntable instrumental that is actually pretty cool. I sometimes skip it but it's alot of fun and reminds me of something that would be off of S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
11.I Miss You 9/10...A great heart felt ballad with insanely affectionate lyrics. Tremendous song.
12.Pardon Me 9/10...Once again, after many many listens i'm still not sick of it. One of Incubus' best hits, great song.
13.Out From Under 8.5/10...One of their heaviest and an interesting way to end it all. A pretty good song although the verses are a tad annoying, the ending is great.
Just like all their releases this is a must have and a definite fan favorite for good reason. I highly recommend.
great album. - Review written on October 21, 2005

produced by Scott Litt, Incubus' second full-length album, Make Yourself, makes a bid for broader mainstream success while keeping the group rooted in a hybrid of familiar late '90s alt-metal (i.e., roaring guitars, white-noise sonic textures, and an undercurrent of electronics) and Chili Pepper funk-rock. where S.C.I.E.N.C.E. sometimes veered abruptly between the two genres without really fusing them, Make Yourself finds the band settling more comfortably into its sound, and once again, there are a few really good singles. once again, too, there are still a few awkward moments and underwritten songs, but overall, the album should definitely please fans.

Let me start out by saying I am a huge Incubus fan. The album that got me into Incubus is Morning View. The album that made me love Incubus is Make Yourself.
Make Yourself is quite simply amazing. Two things are most important in songs:
1. Vocal talent - Brandon Boyd is a beautiful singer, his normal singing voice is extremely soothing to listen to, making songs like "I Miss You" a moving lullaby that one can't help but mouth the words along to with our loved one in mind. In contrast, energetic songs that make you want to get up and scream along with Brandon are also extremely well delivered, like the album-title song, "Make Yourself". No one can deny he is one of the most talented male singers of alternative rock.
2. Instrumentals - Mike Einziger delivers extremely catchy guitar melodies, and some that just make you feel like dancing like a crazy-person and screaming the words ("Blood on the Ground", "Sick Sad Little World" from Morning View and ACLOTM). DJ Kilmore offers talented turntable tricks to entraced listeners like myself, and is a wonderful eddition to the band, making songs like "Pardon Me" something they could never be without him. Ben Kenney, the guy I share a name with (At least the Kenney part), supplies the bass to the songs that give life to to my subwoofer along with Jose Pasallis's drum ryhthms. In the end, Incubus supplies the crave for that special instrumental that is very catchy and unique.
This album in particular is near-perfect. I love every track on the CD and have listened to it hundreds of times. If I had to choose tracks to avoid it would be "Clean" and "Out From Under". I didn't care for either of these at first, but (something that seems to hold true with ALL Incubus music, save a few songs) the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me.
[Track Reviews in order of my favor]
1. So hard to choose! I'll say "Make Yourself". The segement where Brandon screams "MAKE YOURSELF!" in the middle is awesome.
2. "Pardon Me". I can relate to this song, feeling like the stress will make you spontaneously combust. The bwick-bwickies by Kilmore are unbelievably catchy in this song.
3. "Stellar". Classic Incubus, classic song, beautiful lyrics and riveting guitar. Heavy-instrumental love song.
4. "I Miss You". When Incubus does a slow song, they do them right. I can also relate to this when missing someone I love. Definitely a beautiful song.
5. "Warmth". A reminder when things go bad and everyone seems like they're evil that it's not always this bad, and that you should experience happiness before you die.
6. "Drive". A popular radio hit. If you listened to the radio often the past 6 years odds are you've had an overdose of this song and will never want to hear it again. But this should tell you something about the song and the album, they're both extremely liked, and for a good reason.
7. "Nowhere Fast". Simply catchy. Good vocals.
8. "When it Comes". What can I say, most of the songs I like for no other reason than they sound extremely good to me, this is one of those.
9. "Consequence"
10. "Privelege"
11. "Battlestar Scratchlactica" - A complete instrumental with DJ Kilmore and two DJs of a hip-hop group, the name of which eludes me right now.
12. "Clean"
13. "Out From Under"
Incubus is definitely one of those listen-to-more-than-once bands. The first song I heard was Stellar, thought it was okay at the time, listened to more, now I regard it as a classic.
And what you've heard about Incubus is unfortunately right, A Crow Left of the Murder is an unfortunate downgrade, but still an extremely good album as well. S.C.I.E.N.C.E is great in the beginning, but "bleh..." in the end, and the earlier CDs (Fungus Amongus and Enjoy Incubus) are of a totally different genre, I'd call hardcore funk or something.
Just pick the CD up if you have good taste in music. Give it a chance and you'll definitely love it. If not, I pity you and your taste!

Incubus take their busy, maniacle, user-friendly sound (S.C.I.E.N.C.E), and strip it down to something more plausible for the basic ear.
Make Yourself is truely a higher-point in the, "incubus-is-holier-than-thou" parade.
Winding down off of their 1997 release, 'Science' incubus takes there busy-bodied nu-metal album to a softer extreme. Make Yourself takes off with an instantly single worthy track and ends just the same. Every song on the album is easily comprehendable and every bit as radioworthy as the actual released tracks.
The incubus quintet really hit the ball out of the park with this album. Make Yourself could arguably be perfect in every way.
Definitely a starting point for any incubus enthusiast.

Incubus
Make yourself
Incubus really surprised me with their album Make Yourself. I first heard their hit single "Drive" while I was in my car and it really gave me a calming mellow feeling. Their first album S.C.I.E.N.C.E was really kind of offbeat, and was more of a rap mixed with Goth. This album is very different. Their music isn't pop but not quite alternative, I would place it somewhere in the vicinity of rock. Their genre can't really be classified very well; it's a mix of Southern Californian rock with a bit of scratching and obviously doesn't ignore the good old electric guitar. I am positive that Incubus' music has grown since their first two albums, and I definitely like their new sound. They have shown lots of growth through each of their albums and Make Yourself is a great result of that growth. This album is great, not to mention Brandon Boyd's vocals are a treat in their own right. The rhythm, range, and delivery of his vocals are unlike anyone else on the radio today. The rest of the band is composed of three other musical geniuses, Michael Einziger, Alex Katunich, and Jose Pasillas. The album contains 13 songs, but I think only 12 are worth listening to. Songs 8 and 11 are slow ones, and really calm, and the others are fast paced, but not so fast that you want to stop listening. My favorite song on the CD is "Pardon Me" its just one of those songs you want to listen to when you're pissed, it starts off with a slow tempo and then all of a sudden just busts into head banging glory, its just amazing how fast Boyd can sing, and his range in the song is tremendous. The song I avoid is the tenth on the CD, it is considered instrumental but I would more appropriately classify it as boring, but maybe that's just me because I am not really into instrumental all by itself without vocals, so if you like instrumental then go for it. As Boyd says in "Consequence"... "Blink and you miss a beat keep one of your eyes open at all times". So take charge and seriously think about buying Make Yourself, I guarantee that you will love it.

Make Yourself. Incubus became famous. Drive became an anthem. But, it is not a total feat without question. S.C.I.E.N.C.E marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Incubus and impecably crafted, a-million-sounds-per-second music. but, Make Yourself is really quite different. it is less about getting a rise from its audience, more about soothing your ears and fears. their previous album became strong through struggling up the rapid grain. this one totally engulfs the grain with warm, overflowing melody and soul. it heats up the sound around it, only to leave you in some euphoric state, in disbelief of the wisdom and genius you have just experienced. with S.C.I.E.N.C.E each song was an infinitive collection of ideas, which are all completed with amazing efficiency. Make Yourself is about one or two amazing ideas per song, making for comfortablel istening, rather than being challenging. you will nod your head gently in time with its groove ridden tracks, and become almost faint with the melody, that geniusly never puts a foot wrong. with the new addition of Chris Kilmore, the album definitly finds it feet. DJ Kilmore adds what DJ Lyfe never could. a soft soul, heart, Something that doesn't sound like it's competing for first place. His textured scratching adds such a subtle dimension to Incubus, which is the only thing that could have possibly been added to make this album a progression, rather than a repeat. Brandon's lyrics are more to the point than the last album, but fit superbly into this, a more stripped down Incubus. they have picked which part of their sound that they like, and believe me, it is good.
