A real grind - Review written on November 04, 2006

This is a tough grinder that won't stall during a buffing, or wire-wheel operation. Using the stones to sharpen surfaces offers less resistance. But if you want to use a white stone, which has certain advantages for some operations, or if you want to buff and polish surfaces, or use a wire wheel, you'll need to remove the housing covers, held in place, if I recall, by 3 or 4 small screws. If you need to make frequently changes, plan on spending some extras minutes. Also, the stone, cotton buffing wheel, or wire wheel may need some alignment if you plan to replace cover before use. Incidentally, some people in industry leave off the covers, but this can be dangerous because the piece being worked can be forcefully thrown outward. Whether or not you replace covers with each wheel change is up to you. In any case, you should wear safety goggles when using this powerful grinder, and remember not to stand in front of it when first turning it on.
Yes, this is a good tool; the little tool rests are sturdy enough to hold the work, but some experienced users take chances by removing them because they frequently get in the way and can occasionally even contribute to an accident! If you've never used this type of tool before, I suggest reading a "how to" booklet. The directions which come with this tool are adequate for setting it up, but the neophyte needs more information on safe use.
Perfect for home use - Review written on July 27, 2004

I have used an 8 inch Jet grinder for years at my job. It performed it's job perfectly over a decade of day-to-day abuse. But for home use, I decided it was overkill. I had looked at the various Delta bench grinders, but wasn't impressed with the reviews they were given. They also seemed underpowered... And Baldors are just too expensive. That left me with the Dewalt.
I have been pleased with this grinder, although I have only had it for a month. It has plenty of power for sharpening dull lawnmower blades, chisels, punches, you name it. It comes with two grinding wheels of differing grit, and between the two grits, you should be covered for 99% of any sharpening chores. Although it would be wise to also buy a wire brush wheel for metal cleaning and deburring.
The unit seems well constructed. Everything assembled easily and seemed well made, although I would have liked to have seen slightly stronger tool rests. But atleast they were stronger than what I saw on other grinders I looked at.
I would easily recommend this for home or small shop use. It's a great value at this price.
Good grinder, but they stopped thinking a little too soon - Review written on June 25, 2004

I just got this unit from Amazon (a GREAT store)and put it together. I am very pleased with the smoothness of operation (inifinetly better than my old Craftsman grinder), but less than pleased with the not very well thought out scheme for attaching the plastic vision safety guards and and the aluminum pedestals for supporting the piece you are grinding. The former attach to steel brackets that can easily come in contact with the grinding wheels (not good) and the latter are only supported on one side and as such can tilt when you apply pressure to a piece being ground (not good, either).
The instructions are also quite poor in showing how to assemble the accesories. It reads like it was written by someone for whom English is a second language.
Also, wish it had a brake as the grinding wheels spin a LONG time after you power off.
Overall, a good tool, but one whose designers stopped thinking too soon when designing it.
As expected - Review written on June 25, 2003

This 6" stationary grinder performs all tasks as expected, with minimal motor noise and easy grinding wheel changes. And if more access to the wheels is needed, the integrated shields swing out of the way with a simple twist of a wing-nut. The plattens adjust their angle to the wheels with similar ease.
For the price, this single speed grinder is a reasonable buy.
My First Bench Grinder - Review written on August 13, 2000

I am Currently starting my workshop in my garage. So I set out one day for the basics, a drill press, a table saw, an air compressor and a bench grinder. That day I came home with the 6 inch DeWalt bench grinder. Since that day, I've used it to sharpen lawn mower blades, remove burs from angle iron I've drilled and many other chores. I've used other makes of the 6 inch bench grinder, and they just simply don't have the guts of the DeWalt. The DeWalt bench grinder starts up fast, doesn't have a problem removing neccessary material, and runs very quietly. It is relatively easy to change wheels, the only improvement I would make on the grinder would be to use finger tightening screws to make it easier to change grinding wheels. Other than that...Great Job DeWalt!
