Best Console I Ever Had!!! (Did not Last) - Review written on June 05, 2008
Rating: 5 out of 5
I have owned a Sega Genesis, Sega Dreamcast, Gameboy, and Xbox, and I must say that the Sega Dreamcast provided the most enjoyment out of all of them. I have always though graphics are a little overrated, and that the main priority is gameplay, which is what this system brings. Luckily, I do not care enough that the graphics are not as good as Xbox or PS2 at the time of it's release, because they simply are not. But, I simply loved the games that were provided for the Dreamcast. My absolute favorites were Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Crazy Taxi 1 and 2, Demolition Racer: No Exit, NFL Blitz 2000, MLB 2K1, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and Power Stone 1 and 2. Those are 10 great games, plus probably some others, including some I know others loved, like Shenmue, that I never played for myself. This is all compared to Sega Genesis and Gameboy, which both had limited gameplay capabilities, and Xbox, which just did not have enough great games, except for Halo, PGR, and Ghost Recon, which all still pale in comparison to those games on Dreamcast. In fact, the only reason I stopped playing these games was because of one fatal flaw in the system, which was that it was much more susceptible to breaking down. I owned two systems, both of which died probably within a year or two. This was actually the only reason I went onto Xbox. I Just hope that down the line, if Sega creates another system, that they will allow playback for the Dreamcast games that I still own, because it was the most fun I ever had with a video game.
Funnest I've ever had with a console. - Review written on April 05, 2008

Dreamcast is by far my favorite. It has very fun games as you'll read in tons of other reviews. None of the newer consoles have met my expectations half as good as the Dreamcast did back in the Christmas of 99'. This is coming from a person who owns 19 consoles including the 360, Wii, Gamecube, PS2, etc. Those consoles have fun games, but coming after the Dreamcast, they are more like novelties to me. If you don't get a Dreamcast, you should at least get the ports of its games such as Sonic Adventure 2, Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue II, House of the Dead 2, and many more. I still buy games for my DC off of here. Most can be found in good condition.
One of my favorite game systems - Review written on July 28, 2007

I just bought the Dreamcast a couple years ago, and still one of favorite game systems.I have a snes,Genesis,N64,Playstation 1 & 2 and a xbox 360, most of these systems are great, but the Dreamcast has the best 2d fighters and arcade that I remember playing back in the day when they were popular.I have a lot of the games I use to back in the day like House of the Dead,Soul Caliber,Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Capcom vs. Snk are just a few that I own right now. This system is still really good because the Dreamcast has hardware similar to the NAOMI arcade machines so most of the games are almost identical and some are better than arcade like Soul Caliber.
Sega done well with the Dreamcast because they did the opposite of Sega Saturn when it comes to games. The games are diverse and range to platform games to 2d/3d fighters and action adventures and most of them are still are not bad and look similar to a PS2 game.I think Sega was targeting people with this system that wanted arcade style games while Sony did the same, but with a dvd player. In 2002 Sega stop making systems after the PS2 out sold the Dreamcast at sales, but now it is just a software company instead which I am glad they are still around.I recently bought a Hori PS2 joystick and used a PS adapter and it's way more fun than using the DC controller.I would highly advise everyone that doesn't already have the DC arcade stick to get an Hori arcade joystick or X-Arcade stick and a PS adapter to get to the whole arcade feel. The DC system has mostly arcade fighting games,so people that don't like this system probably don't like fighting games.
Pros: ahead of its time, vmu is amazing, controller is comfortable, games are cheap, games still look good, great fighting games
Cons: some games look bad, stop making games
The legendary dreamcast... well... it was sorta forgotten - Review written on June 16, 2007

I had heard many things about the Dreamcast, but what attracted me to it was the fact it could run homebrew games without a modchip. Interesting. I figured what the hey and went to a used game store and picked one up for cheap, about 1/5 the price of the ps2. I booted it up and shortly after I realized this wasn't an ordinary system. Unlike ordinary modern game systems which are based purely off alien technology, this caught me off guard with a processor running off of unicorns and a graphics card running off of concentrated magic. I was astonished. The graphics are extremely close to Ps2 quality, better even on well programmed games when compared to poor Ps2 games. With unique titles like Jet Grind Radio and Sonic Adventure, this little beast conquers. I really think it should have been higher up in the video game race, but unfortunately Sega went down the pooper. I modded mine with a cool black and red paint job, led lights, and an extra fan to help cooling. This is my favorite system over any other. The only reason I still use my ps2 is guitar hero. Anywho, this competes with other more popular game systems at a fraction of the price and delivers great performance with great games.
The Best System ever made. - Review written on February 01, 2007

I still play the Dreamcast more then the Playstation 2, X-Box or Gamecube. I'll play it more then I would play with a Wii,PS3 or 360. The games are amazing, the system was well ahead of it's time and you will not find a better value for your gaming dollar then the Sega Dreamcast. In my opinion, I thought Skies of Arcadia was the best RPG on any system at the time, and it still holdsup well against all of todays newer RPG's. Shenmue was the most ambitious game ever developed, and between the local games and the import market there is well over 400 games available for the system and growing! Yes, games are still being made for the dreamcast by independent developers, and available for purchase online...many of which are very rare and valuable, since they are made in far smaller numbers. Do yourself a favor, take the $600 you would spend on a PS#, go out and get a dreamcast and about 3/4 of it's library...you can thank me later!

The Sega Dreamcast is awesome! They have great 128-bit graphics. It has a huge library of games like Sonic, Tony Hawk, 2K Games, Tennis, and Racing games. The games are CDs, so they are easy to carry around. The Dreamcast lets you play up to 4-players. Many Dreamcast games were also made for Playstation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube, so if you already have another video game system, you will enjoy Dreamcast. The best part about the Dreamcast is it's low price. The Dreamcast is only about $50.00, while the Playstation 2 is $129.99, the Xbox is $109.99, and the Gamecube is $99.99.
If you like video games, you should get a Dreamcast!
Too Bad - Review written on August 16, 2006

The Dreamcast has(had) some of the funnest games. Powerstone 2(the greatest 4 player brawler ever. Smash Bros. Sucks), chu-chu rocket, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Soul Caliber, and Skies of Arcadia, will always hold a place in my heart.
The greatest fault I found with the dreamcast was the inability to play the dvd-roms of the contemporary systems. The graphics easily rival the x-box and ps2, but the sheer size of the xbox and Ps2 titles simply outperformed the Dreamcast. Had Sega been patient and released an up-to-date system, maybe the Dreamcast would not have gone the way of its predicessors, the Saturn and CD.
Note: I bought a PS2, which, broke soon after purchasing. I coulda got it fixed, but I realized that it's the games, not the system which matters. I returned to playing NES, PS1, N64, and DC games. To my surprise, many of these "old" games are more fun and worthwhile than many of the PS2 and Xbox games I played. I guess the inferior games of every system are forgotten and only the best games are still being played.
Sega goes bye-bye - Review written on August 12, 2006

Finally, Sega releases a video game system that rises above mediocrity! Sega is famous for all kinds of failed (and embarrassing) video game consoles they brought to the world, but this time they actually "kind of" got it right with the Dreamcast.
Unfortunately, Sega made a gigantic mistake that almost immediately brought down any chance of the Dreamcast becoming a success. They chose to release the Dreamcast in late 1999. Gaming fans vividly remember what happened to the Sega Saturn just a couple years before, and people weren't going to be fooled again. This was now or never for Sega. If the Dreamcast failed, Sega would be gone from the hardware market forever.
The release date for the Dreamcast was getting closer and closer. It was in September of 1999. People were still very happy with their Playstation One because 1999 was one of Sony's highlights for spectacular and revolutionary gaming. That wasn't the only thing going on. Sony fans were also anticipating the release of the Playstation 2, which was guaranteed to become the dominant console thanks to the relentless power and popularity the Playstation One was responsible for. It was during this time Sony was far and away the most powerful company in the video game business. Sega saw trouble ahead but continued to move forward with the expected Dreamcast release date.
Nintendo was also very much alive and in the big picture with the Gamecube. Nintendo was content on making sure their fans would NOT be disappointed with the Gamecube the way they were with the N64. Nintendo fans are loyal. *Nothing* can knock out Nintendo. Nintendo recognized their mistake with the N64 and knew they could make it right again. They knew they could give the Playstation 2 a run for its money (and looking back, Nintendo did just that).
And so, the release date for the Dreamcast arrived. With Nintendo and Sony on top of their game, what would happen? What would happen to Sega? The Dreamcast would hit the market and... nothing. No sound. No noise. So little was said about the Dreamcast on the release date that it was like Sega had died right then and there. An eerie silence for a company that gave the world Sonic the Hedgehog.
The Dreamcast failed because there were already more than enough successful gaming consoles on the market in 1999, and people didn't want the Dreamcast to interfere with the superior, soon-to-be-released Sony and Nintendo gaming systems. Sega also failed because of their long, frustrating history of ripping people off with unsatisfactory video game systems (such as the Sega CD and Sega Saturn). Sega would fool people into thinking they had something extraordinary in the works... only to end up not supporting it. They had trouble supporting the video game consoles they created and would often leave people with failed attempts and false hopes. Sega would always fall asleep on the job. This would happen time and time again, with Sega hoping the brain-dead masses would buy their average, incomplete gaming consoles. It's like the people who worked for Sega would always say "let's start something and not finish it".
When Sega failed YET AGAIN with the Saturn, people finally couldn't TAKE anymore. Anyone who was still a Sega fan by that point pretty much lost all hope. Sega was now the enemy and they had to go. A gaming console needs a giant selection of games, and unfortunately Sega only understood that ONE TIME in their lackluster history (with the Genesis). Every other console they released only had a few classics to choose from among a bunch of average games.
In the case of the Dreamcast, Sega tried to support it but it was too late. Sony had defeated them. Sony had defeated BOTH the Saturn and the Dreamcast with the overpowering success of the Playstation One. Hard to believe but it's true: the Playstation One knocked out BOTH the Saturn and the Dreamcast off the market, making both of those consoles nothing more than a disappointing memory for Sega fans.
In 1999, Sega knew they wouldn't be able to compete with the Playstation 2, so they finally did the right thing in early 2001 by announcing that they would never again make another video game console. Sega was DONE. They admitted defeat. That, my friends, made milions and millions of people very happy. No more junk on the market. That announcement was the best thing that could have happened, and if you happened to glance outside that day you would have noticed the sun smiling down on everyone.
That meant no more arrogant Sega promotion. I used to hate the way Sega would always promote their games by putting down Nintendo and Sony. Now I can laugh at it. Sega really thought they could trick people into buying their crappy games by constantly making fun of Nintendo and Sony. Didn't work. Nintendo and Sony fans are too smart and considerate for that immature nonsense. I bet everyone responsible for the Playstation's creation were laughing in piles of money over the "fly, play thing, fly" commercial that Sega created in an attempt to make Sony look second-rate. Ha! That ugly, gray-colored box destroyed both the Saturn and the Dreamcast, and I hope Sega fans never forget it.
It's almost 2007 and people are STILL talking about the Gamecube and Playstation 2. Why? Because they are successful video game consoles. People will look back and REMEMBER them as successful consoles. No one remembers that the Dreamcast tried to compete with them at one point. People forgot the Dreamcast even EXISTED when the year 2002 came around. Sega's video game consoles immediately became dated and forgettable once companies stopped making games for them. If Sega had put less energy into putting down the competition and more energy into offering their customers *complete* and enjoyable gaming consoles, maybe they'd still be around today. As it stands, they deserved to watch Nintendo and Sony destroy them. Nintendo and Sony didn't have to stoop to dirty tactics to win over fans and the world is now a better place.
With the release of Nintendo's new revolutionary Wii system coming to America this November, along with the Playstation 3, we don't have to laugh at Sega's silly attempt to compete only to end up being the laughing stock of the world. Goodbye Sega.

After playing Dreamcast at a friend's house a year ago I was encouraged to buy one for myself. I ended up purchasing a black sega sports dreamcast on ebay and have never looked back since. When I was a younger kid, I owned an N64 and PSone and I was constantly bashing sega and the Dreamcast. It is only now that I realize just how wrong I was to do so. The Dreamcast really could have(and should have) been something great. In recent years I have added a gamecube and playstation 2 to my lineup and I see dreamcast as a system that could have very well competed with these two and xbox as well. The graphics are almost on par with the ps2 and gc and thats really quite amazing considering it was released much earlier. The systems controller and the VMU memory card are very innovative and far beyond their time. This was the first console to feature online gaming too. The best part about dreamcast is its selection of games. Sonic adventure 1 & 2 are both excellent platformers. It's got great RPGS like Grandia II, Skies of Arcadia, and Phantasy Star Online. All of the 2k sports games and virtua tennis were amazing for their time and even if they seem a little old now they can still be fun. For shooters we have Resident Evil and House of the Dead among others. The best games on dreamcast have got to be the fighters. The selection includes Street Fighter III and Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Soul Calibur which is quite possibly the greatest fighter ever made. I also cant leave out marvel vs capcom 1 and 2. One of my favorite games is Powerstone 2 which in my mind is even more fun that Super Smash Bros Melee on gamecube which I also own. The first powerstone game is also a lot of fun. Dreamcast also features a wide array of unique games like Crazy Taxi, Seaman, Jet Grind Radio, and of course the revolutionary Shenmue. Playing some games on Dreamcast for the first time years after its release (and sadly after its demise) makes me wonder if I had been sitting in a cave for the past 8 years! As someone who owns both gamecube and ps2 and who used to be a sega basher, I am telling you, this is the best value you will ever get for a system so cheap. Most of the games are relatively cheap and can be bought on sites like this one and auction sites like ebay. It is really sad that dreamcast isn't competing with ps2, gc, and xbox like it should be. Even if you own a more modern system, take it from me that dreamcast is every bit as "next-gen" as any one of those.
The most underrated 128-bit console of all time. - Review written on June 02, 2006

After Sega failed with the Saturn, they tried again with the Dreamcast (codenamed Katana during development). It was released on Setember 9, 1999 on the US shores. It was, by far, the best 128-bit console. Ever.
Companies purposely tried to make the Dreamcast sell bad. For example, Squaresoft released Final Fantasy 8 the same day as the Dreamcast. And Sony told lies to the public about the PS2, to make it seem better, and then everyone started to think that nothing could surpass the PS2, and anything that is not PS2 sucks. The first run of Dreamcast games, such as Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure, had amazing graphics that surpassed the first run of PS2 games. But everyone was so entranced in Sony's lies that almost no one thought the Dreamcast existed. Dreamcast had anti-aliasing, which gets rid of jagged edges. PS2 didn't have anti-aliasing, and as a result, even the newest PS2 games look jagged. But people were still entranced to think PS2 was better.
The game selection was really good too. Resident Evil Code Veronica was originally on Dreamcast, until whiny PS2 fanboys started crying to Capcom and then they released Resident Evil Code Veronica on PS2.
Dreamcast games generally had fast load times, compared to PS2 games. The discs the Dreamcast used were GD-ROMS (GigaDisk-Read only memory), and the games could not be copied on to a computer without seriously messing with the disc.
To end my review:
It's not that I don't like PS2. In fact, it's one of my favorite consoles. But Sony didn't need to lie about the features to make Dreamcast fail. Dreamcast died in 2001, and the last game was published in February 2002. RIP Dreamcast. May your fanbase never cease to grow.

I know this review is just a few years too late but I felt compelled to write it. I can't understand how the Dreamcast failed, I own a PS2, XBOX and a Gamecube and considering the amount of time it was out for it outperformed all of those consoles for classic games. I mainly use my PS2 now, mainly because it has basically full third party support, i'm not interested in performance and specifications, just the number of good games available. Nintendo are extremely overrated, and I consider my Gamecube a waste of money and I have a few great Xbox games but I wouldn't reccomend it over the Dreamcast.
In just a couple of years the following classics started out on Dreamcast: Resident Evil Code Veronica
Virtua Tennis 1&2
Jet Set Radio
Metropolis Street Racer
Shenmue 1&2
Phantasy Star Online
Skies Of Arcadia
Headhunter
that is just to name a few, and it is more amazing considering that the Dreamcast received such little third party support. It just goes to show that if you dont get support from EA, and their rubbish sport games, which just have a new number on the end every year, then a console can't suceed, sad but true.
