A Voice of Reason in an Age of Uncertainty - Review written on January 15, 2008

I came of age in the madness of the mid 70s. Like so many of my age, I lived my life through the songs I heard on radio. Dan was a clear and beautiful voice of reason, forgiveness, loss, longing, love and letting go. I always felt that he looked into my soul and wrote only for me. I will miss him terribly, but have his art to listen to and live by as I enter my 50s.
This album captures most of my favorites. Part of the Plan is a lesson I still try to live daily. The poignancy of Same Old Lang Syne reminds us how hard is to let go of the past, and yet how impossible it is to recapture it. He's been a part of my collection through vinyl, 8 Tracks, cassettes, CDs and MP3s. Whatever format comes next, I know I'll own this album in it.

Most of us heard the sad news the other day. Dan Fogelberg passed away. He may have died in a tragic way, but his music is guaranteed to live on forever.
During his early years his music resembled the Eagles a little bit, and during the early 80's he reminded me of a toss between Toto and Kenny Loggins. His songwriting skills were extremely impressive. He knew how to write music that people would remember years later, which is where he's sort of like America, Seals and Crofts, and other soft rock musicians.
Dan Fogelberg was never known as being a monster hit on radio stations. He was too soft for the classic rock stations, and his music didn't quite fit in with any of the soft rock channels for whatever reason. He was sort of like Gordon Lightfoot in that respect, except Lightfoot did have some success at one point in his career.
I remember this Greatest Hits album as a child. I would look at the album cover and I'd actually think it was what I used to call "fancy restaurant" music, haha. All because Fogelberg dressed up and gave a serious look into the camera! Realistically, it's just soft rock/country rock. I have nothing but good things to say about the songs as well.
"Part of the Plan" resembles the Eagles, though the Eagles never really focused on writing music quite THIS catchy. "Heart Hotels" has a beautiful instrumental section at the end. I simply love it. "Longer" was the big hit. It reminds me of something Seals and Crofts would do, with instrumentation that some people like to make fun of, however, I'd like to see musicians today write something like that. They wouldn't be able to do it. They wouldn't be able to fill your imagination with images and memories that, for me personally, deal with the outdoors, climate changes, and the environment. It's what I call simple perfection.
"Missing You" reminds me of the rock band Toto, and has an amazing rock guitar solo at the end. It's really melodic and good and rocks out. "Power of Gold" is a perfect pop song. If you like this song, check out 10cc's "Crazy Love". The two songs are a bit similar if you ask me. I consider that a wonderful thing. "Leader of the Band" has extraordinary singing and a great vocal melody.
If you ask me, this Greatest Hits captures a man at his most diverse, and his memory will live on forever because memorable music does NOT fade away, ever.

OK....see if you can make sense of this...my favorite bands are Radiohead, the Cure, Bauhaus, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk, and Dan Fogelberg.....so, where does his sound fit into this genre' of music? IT DOESNT...i just happen to love this guys voice and his tunes....my favorite one on here is Same Ol Lang Syne...oh my god, i melt when i hear this....i have to admit, lots of his music is sentimental to me due to my childhood, but i listen to him pretty much every night when i go to bed..i think his music is beautiful......Peace :)

A short and sweet greatest hits package - Review written on October 15, 2000

"Dan Fogelberg-Greatest Hits" is a nice greatest hits CD, and every song is quite good. The only problem is the time period in which these songs cover is not long enough! The least the record company could have done was to have waited "longer" to include Dan's noteworthy hits "The Language Of Love", "Go Down Easy", "Lonely In Love", and others. The best of the hits featured in "Dan Fogelberg-Greatest Hits" are: Dan's first chart hit, the folk-rock "Part Of The Plan", "Heart Hotels", "Make Love Stay", "Longer", "Hard To Say", "Leader Of The Band" (a tribute to Dan's late musician father), "Same Old Lang Syne" and "Missing You". "The Power Of Gold" (with Tim Weisberg) and "Run For The Roses" are solid hits as well. Any Dan Fogelberg fan can pick their favorites here (plus a few others listed above that should have been included here!). This is a nice CD for Dan's fans to have in their collection, nonetheless.
Terrific Compilation Of Dan Fogelberg's Hits! - Review written on September 21, 2000

This is a terrific compilation of most of Dan Fogelberg's greatest hits, released at the apex of Dan Fogelberg's popularity in the early 1980s, and provides a great overview of the work of one of folk-rock's most under-appreciated artists. From the stirring opening "Part Of The Plan" to the lyrical ballad "Longer", this album showcases Dan's wide range of songwriting, musical, and arrangement skills. Fogelberg tends to favor a very full "wall of sound" approach to his music, and sometimes tends to somewhat overproduce arrangements by having too much going on simultaneously in his works. Yet here the songs are clear, crisp, and simply terrific, from "Power Of Gold" to "Make Love Stay" to a lovely treatment of "Heart Hotels". Of course, his biggest hits like "Leader Of The Band", "Run For The Roses" to "Same Old Lang Syne" are all here. I was sorry that neither "Face The Fire" nor "The Reach" are here, but perhaps they will be in future compilation. This is a wonderful album, folks, and a splendid introduction to Mr. Fogelberg's considerable skills and talents. I highly recommend it, as well as his individual albums. Enjoy.
It Covers A Short Time Period, But Does So Beautifully - Review written on January 07, 2000

Dan Fogelberg came about a greatest hits collection honestly. He had been recording for 10 years when this album came out in 1982, but its core (six of 10 songs) was from two years and two albums: "Phoenix" (1979) and "The Innocent Age" (1981). Fortunately, they are among the pick of those sets.
Fogelberg was maddeningly inconsistent, even when his music was most prevalent. He wrote verse better left on anniversary cards ("Longer") or showed wistfulness with sharp detail (the gentle "Leader of The Band," "Missing You," the New Year's favorite "Same Auld Lang Syne") His melodies were always sturdy, but he backed them with lyrics either pretentious ("Make Love Stay") or overly sentimental ("Run For The Roses," which, after all, is about a horse). This is a fine introduction to Fogelberg's music, but the original albums, especially "Phoenix" and the overlooked "NetherLands" are preferred.
