Growing up in Michigan Bob Seger is practically a god in the state. He was, and still is, such a huge concert draw that his tickets sell out in a matter of minutes. One of the very first albums I ever purchased was "Live Bullet" and it remains one of my all time favorite live albums. I have many other Seger discs on Vinyl, but have not bothered to replace most of them on CD. When this hits collection came out I thought that I would pick it up so I had some Seger on CD. This is exactly what it says it is a collection of Seger's big hits. All of these are radio staples in the Midwest, but it serves as a nice, albeit far from complete collection of Seger's music. My favorites on this tend to be songs that did not get quite played to death as much as the other ones. "The Fire Inside" is a great song that did not chart all that high. "Roll Me Away" is another favorite. "Turn The Page" is still great even after hearing it hundreds of times. The rest is all decent too. There is a lot of stuff missing here. Seger could easily put together a double, triple or even box set compilation of his work. This collection is ok for what it is, but serious fans should look beyond his singles.

Bob Seger's music is just as great now 30 years on as when I first heard it. I love listening to all the oldies - it is a great selection of his songs.

If there is one artist who could & should have a 2 disc set for his hits this is one of them. Bob Seger has been around many years and has albums recorded before he was known outside of the Detroit area. This would've been much better at a larger size. Seger also has a ton of album cuts that could be included. Let's face it, there's probably no way everybody will be satisfied, no matter what goes on the disc.

In recent years compilations haven't done very well on the charts. This one was different, it actually peaked at #8. The songs aren't in chronological order which is my biggest complaint about the collection. There are 14 songs on the disc & it's a varied affair. "Roll Me Away" (#27 Pop Singles, #14 Mainstream Rock), "Night Moves" (#4 Pop Singles), "Turn the Page", might be the greatest song statement in history which tells the tale of being a musician touring on the road, didn't receive any chart action. "Turn the Page" would rank in my 100 Greatest Rock Songs. "You'll Accomp'ny Me" (#14 Pop Singles), "Hollywood Nights" (#12 Pop Singles), "Still the Same" (#4 Pop Singles), "Old Time Rock & Roll" (#48 Pop Singles, #58 Hot 100), "We've Got Tonight" (#13 Pop Singles), "Against the Wind" (#5 Pop Singles), "Main Street" (#24 Pop Singles), "The Fire Inside" (#6 Mainstream Rock), "Like a Rock" (#1 Mainstream Rock, #12 Hot 100, #21 Adult Contemporary), "C'est La Vie" (no chart action) & "In Your Time" (no chart action).

Not all these songs are favorites of mine & the last two shouldn't even be there. Knowing that there would be at least a second volume along the way Capitol Records could've done a better job of limiting the compilations to fall within certain time periods. We really get a scattershot compilation here that veers all over his career without any apparent reasoning.
Woke up Last Night to the Sound of Thunder... - Review written on October 28, 2007

...How far off, I sat and wondered... Started humming a song from 1962
Ain't it funny how the night moves?

As a child of the 60s already feeling out of place in the late 70s, those lines pierced me to the heart. How many nights as a teenager full of angst did I listen to the sound of thunder and count off the seconds trying to determine when the storm would arrive? Because, of course, when the rain would come, I could sleep like a child again.

Yeah, Bob Seger grabbed me when that song came out in 1976 and I've been a fan ever since. You could even say that his songs are cliches of my life: Like a Rock, We've Got Tonight, Still the Same, Against the Wind, Rock and Roll Never Forgets and so on.

This little collection is great and everybody ought to have it. Sure, it could have more cuts, but for what it is, it is really worth the money. I've worn out two copies already and am on the third one! Best part is, even my grown children and my classics loving husband like Bob Seger!

I still wake up to the sound of Thunder... and hum Bob Seger's "Night Moves"!

This was everything I expected from Bob Seger. Great music for great times. This entire CD is music I can sing along with. This music reminds me of a certain time in my life where youth, excitement, good times and good music all went hand in hand!

The Real Poet of the Working Man - Review written on October 11, 2007

I got this CD as a gift a couple years ago, and I was shocked at how timeless these recordings are. They really hold up well! Sure, I know, aficianados are upset at the lack of their favorite hits, but for newbees and fans like me coming back into the fold, this is a great place to start. Die hards are going to buy all the other albums anyhow. I mean, my favorite song, "Katmandu," isn't on here, but so what: So many other great tunes ARE.

This album could be called "Old Time Rock & Roll," because that's what Seger is: His songs are bluesy without trying to be blues; they're boogie-woogie without overdoing it on the piano. They're very straightfoward and honest. They are simply themselves, not putting on pretentious airs, *trying* to be something they're not.

I have no idea what rung on the economic ladder Seger came from, because he never makes a big deal about it. But, to me, these are the real songs of the working class, because that's what I heard growing up, in biker bars, American Legion halls, in trailer parks and on jukeboxes in pizzerias in the Heartland. Seger is the real article. He doesn't have to tell you every five seconds about what a working class hero he is, like Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar Mellencamp, because Seger sounds like a guy who truly believes in his music. He's not trying to be an "everyman," because he so thoroughly sounds like his *own man.* Listen to "Against the Wind," and tell me I'm wrong.

I haven't heard anything new from Seger in a while, but maybe that's because he probably got enough royalties from Chevrolet using "Like a Rock" for a solid DECADE in its truck commercials.

That's longevity. If Seger were some passing fad, it wouldn't have lasted a month.

I loved it! I always knew these guys made great songs, but you forget how many until you listen. One after the other I kept saying to myself, "Oh yeah...I forgot they made this one, too." If a disc can be worn out, I will do that to this one...excellent!!

For me, Bob Seager is a diverse singer, Rock and Roll, country even blues in his music. His voice is one that when you hear it you know right away who it is. This album is a great compilation of timeless classics as well as some new cuts. Roll me away is
a well done tune with a melody like a well tuned running engine out of a 68 mustang. Like many others have quoted in their reviews there are several other great songs that are missing most notably for me is "Fire Lake" wich is probably my favorite Seager song ever. Still, This is a great album and is a must have if you like Seagers' music.

Fortunately, I spent the early 80's listening to Top-40 radio in Los Angeles (i.e., KIQQ-FM and KIIS-FM) where they would play the 'best' of rock, pop, r&b, and even country. This was my introduction to Bob Seeger. The songs, "Night Moves," "Still the Same," "Old Time Rock and Roll," "Against the Wind," and "Like a Rock." Great tunes from a great artist. Although other reviewers are saying that there is so much more out there - this collection is a great place to start! Five stars!

A lady friend is considering the purchase of a motorcycle. Aside from the skill and judgement, motorcycle ownership is about passion.

So I played Bob Seger's "Roll Me Away" for her. Now if you don't get a little choked up when Bob sings "someday, we'll get it right", you better stick with the Toyota Hybrid.
