Another Excellent Prince Compilation - Review written on September 09, 2006

This second greatest hits cd includes all the major omissions from the first one and then some. All of the big Prince hits not on the previous cd are here (except for "Batdance", which isn't needed anyway), including "Controversy", "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "Delerious", "Little Red Corvette", "Raspberry Beret", "Kiss", "U Got The Look" and "Cream", as well as lesser known tracks such as "Dirty Mind", "Head" and "Gett Off". Once again, the sound quality is a bit flat but other than that this is an excellent compilation.

While I found "The Hits 1" to be fairly bland and tedious, "The Hits 2" is more palatable. The lyrics to "Controversy" set the stage to let you know this is no ordinary pop performer, traversing gender, race and decorum barriers over the course of the CD. "Am I black or white / Am I straight or gay?" indicate the man (?) has had some serious fun challenging precepts and provoking minds. Unfortunately, his music has not always been up to that task. "Controversy," "Head" and "Delirious" are memorable enough, but ostensible "hits," such as "Dirty Mind," "Do Me Baby" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover," are pedestrian at best. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is a throw back to 1960's Motown and is rather good, though instead of Mary Wells or the Chiffons singing this love song to a would-be boyfriend, we get Prince in his usual falsetto. Bizarre. Anyway, highlights are too numerous to mention, though standouts for me are "Peach" and "Sexy M.F." This CD is not for children.

I bought this last year and I listen to it once in a while. I have both 2 volumes b/c I couldn't afford the whole box set sadly (plus, it wouldn't fit in my cd rack anyways). But back on point. The two new tracks are complete garbage, though nice instrument skills displayed on them. I'll review track by track:
1.it's weird, but creative-7/10
2.nice beat and lyrics-9/10
3.great song in general-10/10
4.dirty-6/10
5.great love ballad. later covered by some singer named melissa morgan, i think-10/10
6.very fast-paced and cool-8/10
7.one of the greatest songs ever recorded. pure classic-10/10
8.good song, but gets boring after a while. still love it though-9/10
9.never liked this one. pop life was a best tune off that album-4/10
10.very very creative and soulful, later covered by TLC-10/10
11.3rd no. 1 hit. need i say more? 10/10
12.great beat, but the lyrics are pure garbage. sounds like it was written about his then wife, Mayte-5/10
13.duet w/ sheena easton. very funky and nice-10/10
14.ha ha ha. it's ok. it has a James Brown feel to it-7/10
15.funky tune. not suggested to be played around young ones-8/10
16.5th and last no. 1 song on the billboard 100. it has a bluesy feel to it-9/10
17.crap-0/10
18.a lovely ballad. this song should be played at every prom. I might suggest this at my prom this coming year. 10/10
...Don't make the same mistake as me. If you are starting to get into his music, by the whole box set and avoid the later ones like Best Of and Ultimate.

I listen to this CD at least twice a week. Definitely worth every penny and then some. My faves are: I wanna be your lover, Do me, baby, delirious, I would die 4 U, If I was your girlfriend, Kiss, Sexy M.F., Gett Off, Cream, and of course, purple rain. Highly recommended.

Excellent CD! I spend most of my time jammin' to all of these greatest hits. I do feel that there should have been more of his songs listed on the "HITS 1 AND 2" from his very first CD. He could have eliminated these: Pope and Peach (from this album), Alphabet St.and Thieves in the Temple(from the first one). Replace with: STILL WAITING, SCANDALOUS, INTERNATIONAL LOVER, INSATIABLE, WHEN 2 R IN LOVE, SEXY DANCER, BABY, CRAZY FOR YOU, JUST AS LONG AS WE'RE TOGETHER, IT'S GONNA BE LONELY. I felt just a little cheated because I really love Prince and half of his best songs were missing. This is going to cause me to go out and purchase multiple CDs from his old collection. The purpose of me getting a GREATEST HITS CD was so that I could get all of them on 1 or 2 CDs without purchasing multiples.
QUESTION: How about creating a "HITS 3" CD and putting all of these on there? That would make me happy!

if you're curious about prince buy this album. this is one of the best greatest hits packages i can remember, and easily supercedes 'hits 1'.
every track is awesome and the songs perfectly groove into one another. it contains the best prince tracks ever (controversy, dirty mind, i wanna be your lover, little red corvete, rasperry beret, get off, sexy m.f, pope and purple rain) and reminds you just how important this guy is.
a must for any soul, funk or dance fan. this is pretty damn incredible stuff

This may not be overall as good as the 17 track "Very Best Of Prince", but between this and "The Hits 1", this is the better of the two. It's alot sexier anyway. Every song is good, but you can't live without "Controversy", "Kiss", "Delirious", "Cream", and "Purple Rain". Again, every song is excellent. If nothing else, this includes "U Got The Look", with the classic lyrics "Your face is jammin', your body's hecka-slammin', if love is good, let's get to rammin'". Essential.
Funkalicious Prince - Review written on January 26, 2004

This is THE HITS 2, released as an individual disc for fans who didn't want to shell out the extra money to buy the 3 CD set which also included a b-sides disc. This is a great buy for casual fans who want a general overview of Prince's music. Hopefully after hearing it, you'll want to look into his other great albums!
The disc contains 16 of his hits, and 2 new songs. The songs are illogically sequenced, in no real special order from release of the singles (which would have made it more coherent). The new tracks, "Pope" and "Peach", don't really fit with the other songs, or the other new songs from HITS 1, but they are great songs nonetheless.
Some highlights among the set include "If I Was Your Girlfriend", "Raspberry Beret", "I Would Die 4 U", "Controversy", "Dirty Mind", "Little Red Corvette", "Kiss", and of course "Purple Rain". Other hits on the set include "Delirious", "Do Me, Baby", "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "Cream", "Gett Off", "U Got The Look", "Sexy M.F.", and more.
THE HITS 2 is a stronger collection as whole than THE HITS 1, but if you buy this one, it goes without saying that THE HITS 1 is also a must buy.
The Darker Side of His Royal Badness. - Review written on December 01, 2003

Even though "The Hits 2" is just one-third of the set "The Hits/The B-Sides," this single disc compilation has enough brilliant material to stand entirely on its own. It's a freaky ride through the darker side of Prince's music during the Warner Brothers years, and at least half of these singles have "masterpiece" written all over them. Groundbreaking tracks like the eyebrow-raising "Head," the flawless "Kiss," and "Little Red Corvette" (one of the great American rock singles) show that Prince was one of the most vital musicians of the 1980s. Not only was he prolific (he released one album every calendar year), but he's the only artist in the 1980s to release FOUR classic albums in one decade: "Dirty Mind," "1999," "Purple Rain," and "Sign O the Times." Madonna couldn't do it. Neither could Bruce Springsteen. Michael Jackson came close, but still no cigar. Even Prince's "lesser" singles like "Sexy M.F." and "Cream" had more to offer than much of Top 40 radio. Of course, diehard fans are strongly recommended to get his 3 disc set that has a slew of his b-sides, but first-time listeners can't go wrong with picking this one up.

Because I gave it 5 stars, I have enjoyed this album throughout the years. The reasons include the maybe the most important: it shows the different sides of Prince. That's great not just for huge fans of Prince but for casual ones too. There's the early disco side of him (I want to be your lover), the ballad side of him (Kiss), the rock side of him (I would die for you), as well as the controversial side of him (Controversy, Sexy M. F., and maybe the ultimate [If I was your girlfriend.]). In addition, when you listen to Do Me, Baby, make CERTAIN your with your lover and just LISTEN to the song.
The Hits 1 does the same thing too. However, and for Prince fans would agree that you MUST buy Hits 1 also. Hits 1 to me is just as strong as Hits 2. The liner notes are exhaustive and enjoyable. Maybe, the BEST hits collection ever compared to other artists!
Great for the casual Prince fan! - Review written on August 05, 2001

Given the prolific nature of Prince's career a hits package was overdue and in order to do it justice two CDs of material would be needed. These were available as casual fan-friendly single CDs or as a 3CD set (The Hits/The B-Sides) that gave the more serious fan the chance to own both volumes along with a collection of Prince's finest B-sides. Also included are two previously unavailable songs on each Hits CD.
However even this relatively extensive format would mean cut backs and edits were made to the longer tracks, this would probably not be noticed by casual fans, though many hardcore collectors saw this to the detriment of the CDs.
The more explicit material of "Hits 2" CD here is a good summary of the dirtier minded Prince output. And coupled with Hits 1 is a comprehensive overview. The two new tracks, the hard rocking blues of "Peach" and the funky-rap of "Pope" also prove invaluable to the collector.
The familiar classics are here. "Kiss" to "Raspberry Beret", "Little Red Corvette" to "Purple Rain". The music remains timeless in quality and scope to this day.
The choice as to whether to go for the two single Hits CDs, the boxset or perhaps neither, all depends on your love for Prince music. Rest assured though that this music successfully chronicles highlights of the eclectic Genius that is Prince Roger Nelson upto 1993 and in funky hands could prove to be an addiction that stays with you for life! :)

In 1993 Prince released a 3 CD set, called The Hits/The Bsides. Fans who wanted the bsides bought that collection, because that was the only way to get a hold of that cd. As well he also released the first two discs, The Hits 1 and 2 as separate discs. This one is The Hits 2, my favorite of the two. This one features hits ranging from his early hits to his early 90's hits. The grooves are undeniable, irresistable. No one can do a song like this, he was revolutionary because this music was new and exciting, no one else had ever created music like this. My favorites on here include Controversy, Diry Mind, I Wanna Be Your Lover, I Would Die 4 U, Raspberry Beret, If I Was Your Girlfriend, Kiss, and Purple Rain. This is a must have for fans of R&B/soul/funk/urban music. This is a great cd to start your Prince collection with if you are a new fan. Essential recording.
Eccentric,Talented,Sex on the Brain..but Brilliant - Review written on October 21, 2000

Prince ,for better or worse, is simply the most talented and eccentric pop icon of the last 25 years.I have had the delight of purchasing the Hits/B Sides box set recently, which should appeal to just about everybody who has ever danced, sung, or had any form of sexual fantasy that involved someone of the opposite sex ,or the same sex for that matter...why?What does Prince,or the Artist,or the former Love Symbol,or whatever produce that captures the imagination and the feel of a time?? This Hits 2 collection appeals on a personal and a general level. It is smooth funky melodic tight and danceable as well as being over the top sexually self obsessive and simply the most memorable collection of songs you will ever purchase. The lyrics are interesting to say the least, and leave the Blood Hound Gang gasping, and *Purple Rain* ,in my humble opinion is as memorable as anything produced by the Beatles,Jimi Hendrix,or whoever.
I would recommend you purchase this for the following songs alone, all defining moments in modern R&B,dance, pop and popular culture,*Little Red Corvette*,Rasberry Beret*,*Kiss* and *Purple Rain*.Prince sings and plays like no other,he delivers an infectious beat and redefined the terms funky and *bad*.His genius is erratic throughout his CD releases and he is self indulgent, which thankfully has been edited here ,to produce an excellent collection of his produced catalogue.I personally believe this is superior to *Hits1*,but that may be splitting hairs somewhat.
Prince was never afraid to say what he felt and had the talent to carry it out on record. He plays produces parades and pouts his way through the social fabric of the 80s like no other. He is an icon, and should be accorded that recognition.Every song on here will hold a memory for someone and it is simply A Grade pop from lyric to production.I would recommend that you purchase the box set,but once you sample this buy at least *Hits1*.For those who find songs like *Do Me Baby*,*SExy MF* and *GettOff* a little excessive jump the track,or live a little, there is certainly enough on here to satisfy you so that you think the money was well spent.Prince continues to produce but as he matures he is erratic but still captures brilliance on CD like no other.Unashamedly 5 stars, which is unusual for me..but what real characters exist out there anymore, and who hasnt Prince influenced in one way or the other???...he is a one off.

I need to write a report for my history class. Unfortunately I can't do that because I'm listening to Prince (or the Artist as he is and should be called now). The Hits Vol.2 is an incredible collection of songs, even better than Vol. 1. The Artist is a genius, my favorite musician after Jimi Hendrix. I can only say that if you buy this album, be prepared to be blown away by every single track. My favorites (right now) are Controversy, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Head, Little Red Corvette, Rasberry Beret, Peach, and Cream, but that will change by tomorrow. Every single track is a funky little masterpiece. If you're not familiar with the Artist, buy this album. I should probably go work now.
