A Rather Ordinary if Pleasant Greatest Hits - Review written on December 10, 2005

This CD was a Big Seller upon it's release in 1992, boasting a Plethora of Big Hits, along with some New Songs. Looking back through 2005 Eyelids, it's hard to hear why these songs were so Huge....The CD starts off well, with Hits from the Primitive Love Album, but as One keeps listening, He realizes that None of these songs have Passion or Depth, a few catchy Melodies and Pleasant, if Plain Vocals. The Dance Numbers at least keep You awake, but the Years 1988-92 found Estefan leaning on Ballads, and One was barely distinguishable from another; on top of that, the 4 New Cuts feel like padding, to fill a CD's worth of material for a Christmastime Release...a Couple of Hits are missing, too(i.e., Bad Boys), so to summarize, Nothing truly Bad here, but precious little on Target....
Why can't record companies do these things right?! - Review written on April 06, 2005

I love Gloria Estefan. During the 80's, she basically had 2 kinds of hits, the latin influenced uptempo numbers and the Karen Carpenter-ish ballads. During the period covered by this CD (1985-1993), Gloria had the most success of her career. She racked up 20 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 during this period, and this CD only contains 14 songs. Here are the songs that this CD criminally ignores:
1. Dr. Beat (1984) - This song did not chart on the Hot 100, but it was the first release from her first album and deserves inclusion just for historical perspective.
2. Bad Boy (1986) - Went to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, why is it not here!
3. Falling in Love [Uh-Oh] (1986) - A #25 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
4. Betcha Say That (1987) - A #36 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
5. Oye Mi Canto [Hear my Voice] (1990) - A #48 hit, should have been a much bigger hit than it was and should have been included here!
6. Cuts Both Ways (1990) - A #44 hit on the Hot 100.
7. Seal our Fate (1991) - A #53 hit.
8. Can't Forget You (1991) - A #43 hit.
9. Live for Loving You (1991) - A #22 hit.
That is 9 songs that should have been on this CD. To make matters worse, they included a song from her Christmas album ("Christmas Through Your Eyes"). Now, there is nothing wrong with this song, but it belongs on a Christmas album, not a Greatest Hits compilation. If you put this CD on in the middle of summer, who wants to hear a Christmas song?! Plus the song was not even technically a hit since it did not chart on the Hot 100. That song should be gone and the 9 songs above should have been on here. To add insult to injury, when they released "Greatest Hits Vol 2" in 2001, they still ignored these hits.
The only hope is that one day the record company will issue a box set with all of her Hot 100 hits. I guess you can do like I did, buy this CD for the great songs that it does contain (especially the excellent ballads "Can't Stay Away from You", "Anything for You", "Here we Are" and "Don't Wanna Lose You"), and then download the missing tracks from the internet. Recommended for the songs it does not contain, but not recommended for leaving off so many good songs.
Good collection of hits from her most successful period - Review written on July 13, 2004

Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine enjoyed their commercial peak in the late 1980s/early 1990s with a string of hit albums and singles, beginning with "Conga" in late 1985. Estefan and crew proved themselves equally adept at Latin-inflected dance tunes such as "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," "Get On Your Feet," and "1-2-3" and the ballads that helped them gain a strong foothold at AC radio, like "Words Get In The Way," "Can't Stay Away From You" and the #1 hit "Anything For You." (In fact, it's interesting to note that all of Estefan's three #1 hits were ballads, the other two being "Don't Wanna Lose You" and the inspirational "Coming Out Of The Dark.") Actually, the band's history goes all the way back to the 1970s, although they recorded only in Spanish for several years. This is a nice collection of Ms. Estefan's English-language output from her most successful period commercially, spanning 1985's PRIMITIVE LOVE through 1991's INTO THE LIGHT and including four new cuts. What is here is first-rate, of course, and even all the new cuts are keepers: the inspirational "Always Tomorrow" was a minor hit and came out around the time that Hurricane Andrew devastated Gloria's home base of south Florida, leading many to adopt it and the earlier "Coming Out Of The Dark" as anthems. "I See Your Smile" is a classic Gloria ballad that easily ranks with her earlier hits, although it didn't quite make the top 40. "Christmas Through Your Eyes" has become a holiday-season standard and is a moving song about wanting to go back to experiencing the joy of Christmas through the mindset of a child. And "Go Away" is a fun dance tune the likes of which only Gloria can do - a bit nonsensical, but still lots of fun. It was a hit in the U.K., and although it wasn't a single in the U.S. (I don't think), it still got some top 40 airplay in the Detroit area.
Not all of the hits are here. One top 10 charter ("Bad Boy") is missing, and "Live For Loving You" also should have been included here, given that it still gets a lot of radio play these days. There was also a "Miami Hit Mix" issued on the U.K. single to "Christmas Through Your Eyes," which should have been included on the U.S. release, as a bonus cut if nothing else. I personally also would have liked to see "Cuts Both Ways" and "Can't Forget You" included, as I consider those two of her best ballads, even though they both came up a few notches short of the top 40. "Can't Forget You" in particular is an underrated gem, and to this day the only place to find it is on the INTO THE LIGHT album. But if you're a Gloria fan, you should have no qualms about the quality of what is included here. Kudos to Gloria for opening up the American pop mainstream to Latino influences and for creating some of the catchiest, most fun pop music ever.
Greatest Hits (1992) - Review written on June 21, 2004

Back in the early 80s, Gloria Estefan was known as the lead of the band Miami Sound Machine. Gloria joined the band in 1978, after she tied the knot with bandmate, Emilio Estefan. Nothing happened until 1984 when Miami Sound Machine released Eyes Of Innocence. The only hit from that album was Dr. Beat, which wasn't even a major hit, for they didn't get any recognition.
In 1985, Miami Sound Machine released Primitive Love, their second album, the album that got them their recognition. Then, in 1986, they changed the name to Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine because Gloria was the main focus. In 1987, Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine released their third album Let It Loose. In 1989, they released Cuts Both Ways. This was their last album together as a band. In 1990, Gloria was in a fatal bus accident, which could have left her paralyzed for life, but luckily, the doctors took care of that, for she has two metal rods in her back, preventing her from being paralyzed. In 1991, Miami Sound Machine became Gloria's back up band, while she became a solo act. In 1991, she released Into The Light, which reflected on her accident.
In 1992, she released her first greatest hits album. I know what you are all thinking, "How can she release a greatest hits album where she only released her first solo album the year before?" Well, she was basically Miami Sound Machine, the fans only focused on her. So the hits on this album are the Miami Sound Machine hits, being that she was the focus of the band. This is an amazing greatest hits. I should know because I grew up with Gloria when my mother was a huge fan of hers.
CONGA
From Miami Sound Machine's album Primitive Love (1985). One of the best songs ever. This song was played in a lot of movies. I can only name one movie where this song was played and that movie is the hit comedy, The Birdcage, which starred Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Christine Baranskie, Dan Futterman, Hank Azaria, and Ally McBeal's Collista Flockhart.
WORDS GET IN THE WAY
From Miami Sound Machine's album Primitive Love (1985). This was the song that made Gloria famous. It is one of the best romantic break-up songs ever and is a favorite of my mother's and mine.
CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM YOU
From Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine's album Let It Loose (1987). Another amazing song. She talks about how they've broken up and it's bad for her to stay with her ex, but she loves him so much that she simply just 'Can't stay away from him'.
1-2-3 (Remix)
Original version from Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine's album Let It Loose (1987). The album version is much better than this.
RHYTHM IS GONNA GET YOU
From Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine's album Let It Loose (1987). This is a great song, with a great beat.
ANYTHING FOR YOU
From Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine's album Let It Loose (1987). Not a favorite of mine.
HERE WE ARE
From Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine's album Cuts Both Ways (1989). When I first heard this song, which was back in 1989 when I was at the age of four, I loved this song. I used have my mother play it at least five or six times a day just to keep me happy. During the years when my family and I would drive down to Florida, we would play a lot of Gloria's music. When my father wanted to take a break from driving, he would climb in the back and have a nap, while my mother took over the driving with me in the passenger seat. She would play the Cuts Both Ways album and when this song came on, I would sing the whole thing without a problem. I have a lot of great memories of this song.
GET ON YOUR FEET
From Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine's album Cuts Both Ways (1989). Another great song.
DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU
From Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine's album Cuts Both Ways (1989). Not a favorite of mine.
COMING OUT OF THE DARK
From the album Into The Light (1991). This was the only hit from the Into The Light (1991) album. This was the song that reflected the most on her bus accident. I wish she would have included Live For Loving You, which is also from the Into The Light (1991) album. My mother and I used to sing that one as well.
CHRISTMAS THROUGH YOUR EYES
Previously unreleased. This was Gloria's first Christmas song and she had written it for her son, Nayib. In fact, this is the second song she recorded for her son, the first song is called, Nayib's Song (I Am Here For You), and it can be found on the Into The Light (1991) album. In 1993, a year after this album, Gloria recorded a Christmas album entitled, Christmas Through Your Eyes, where she added this song to it.
I SEE YOUR SMILE
Previously unreleased. This is a beautiful song. I recommend that everyone listen to this song.
GO AWAY
Previously unreleased. Okay.
ALWAYS TOMORROW
Previously unreleased. Okay.
I've been a fan of Gloria's for years and she will always remain as one of the best female performers of the world today.

Latin Music At Its Best - Review written on January 26, 2004

"Greatest Hits" is a compilation of Gloria Estefan's best from 1985-1990. Her combination of latin, pop, and dance offer some of the greatest upbeat grooves from the 1980's. She pushed the music barriers that were held in the 1980's. She proved many critics wrong when they called her music "too Latin for the Americans, too American for the Latins". In fact, she started a revolution.
Her highly catchy songs keep listeners dancing for a long time ("1,2,3", "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You"). Her ballads are very soulful, sung very expressively ("Don't Wanna Lose You", "Words Get In the Way"). Every track on this album is timeless. Many critics have hailed "Coming Out of the Dark" her best single in her career, which explores her painful recovery from her bus accident. However, she never writes or performs a bad song. She proves that with or without The Miami Sound Machine, she excels at music beautifully. She never loses a beat for a second. Accompanying her great music is a beautiful voice that blends perfectly with the theme regardless of what it is.
Her four new tracks prove that she continues to evolve as an artist with this album release: "Chrismas Through Your Eyes", "I See Your Smile", "Go Away", and "Always Tomorrow". Such quality proves that her best is yet to come. Nothing will stop her from doing what she loves.
"Greatest Hits" is important material for any Gloria Estefan fans and/or latin music fans. This is sure to please many listeners for many years. Those looking for more should also buy "Greatest Hits Vol. 2", which continues where this album left off. Such a combination makes a great listening experience.

It's inevitable, that's some artist began to fade in the radio airwaves, but not in the memory of true fans. For anyone who ever thought, that making a Greatest Hits album was easy, think again, first you could simply chose the highest ranked singles, or should you include the fans faveorites!, what should you do?, well somehow Gloria managed that well, this greatest hist included the highest ranked single, and some new fans favs!, sadly some great joints were left behind like(Bad Boys(a superb radio version not available in CD, Live For Loving You), but anyways this album does include the essentials and instaled in a well done track position, it's no doubt, that Gloria is the Latin Queen, and all the song that are here are great songs, in no way fillers, a great Greatest Hits, sold more than 4 million copies, defenitly a must have collection.

Gloria may not be as popular as say Mariah or Celine, but she is definitely one of the divas. This collection represents her best material ranging throughout the 80's into the early 90's. This contains her three #1 hits which are the ballads "Anywhere For You," the gospel inspired "Coming Out of the Dark" and my personal favorite "Don't Wanna Lose You." This collection doesn't leave out her dance work either. "Conga" is a great way to open the album and is sure to have any listener grooving in his/her seat. "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" and "1, 2, 3" are here also. Another favorite is the big hit "Words Get In the Way" which was definitely an 80's adult contemporary staple. Gloria's Christmas classic "Christmas Through Your Eyes" is a welcomed inclusion too *written by Diane Warren.* I also very much enjoy "I See Your Smile" which shows itself to be a pleasant and strong ballad.
For casual Gloria fans, this is the best album to get to get the just of her work. Volume 2 has some hits too and is definitely worth looking into to, but this should be the first stop. One of the best "Greatest Hits" albums you can buy.

1992 was a year of collection releases, especially for those artists that had had at least 3 studio albums released during the previous years.
Gloria is no exception.
And i believe this collection sums up nicely what she achieved up til then.
As well as all of her # 1 hits, Top 10 hits, fans favourites, the cd includes the first breaks DR BEAT, CONGA and WORDS GET IN THE WAY (as far as the European release go...).
The 4 (count 'em: FOUR!) new songs are alone a good reason to buy this cd:
you have a Christmas song co-written with Diane Warren(CHRISTMAS THROUGH YOUR EYES), a great pop ballad co-penned by Jon Secada (I SEE YOUR SMILE), a latin-influenced uptempo tune (GO AWAY) and the song of hope ALWAYS TOMORROW.
A must for fans and music lovers alike.

Gloria Estefan. No flashy names, no tricky dance numbers, no half-dressed music videos. Just straight up MUSIC that anyone can listen to! 'The Rhythm Is Gonna Get Ya,' 'Go away,' 'Get On Your Feet,' the list goes on and on! EACH song here is a hit, not just one or two. If you like to dance, this is for you. If you like to just sit and listen, this is for you. If you're TIRED of bubble gum music that changes with the tides, THIS is for you! Gloria's proven she's got staying power. Since her 'Miami Sound Machine' days, she's never looked back. Pick up this CD and find out why.

I love this woman! She is so talented~ She has so much meaning in her songs when she sings~ She is amazing~ She not only sings like an angel, she writes her own songs! She is by far I think one of the best female singers out there!
Gloria has so much emotions mixed in her songs. She is unbelievable~ I'm 15 years old and I listen to her all the time. My mom listened to her when she was younger and she cant belive I love this cd as much as I do. talent never gets older! Everybody needs to know the talent of Gloria Estefan!
Some of the songs I listen to that I think are some of the best are Can't Stay Away From You, Conga, Rythm is Gonna Get You, Here We Are, Don't Wanna Lose You, Anything For You, and I See Your Smile.
This is a compilation of her greatest hits and thats exactly what you get from this wonderful album!

First off, Gloria Estefan is just one amazing artist. Words cannot express how good she is. However, as a huge fan, I believe many other fans and myself would have rathered the tracklisting include a particular 4 more songs. This is my version of an improved tracklisting for this CD:
1. Dr. Beat (ISN'T ON THE CD)
2. Words Get In the Way
3. Can't Stay Away From You
4. Bad Boy (ISN'T ON THE CD)
5. Conga
6. 1-2-3 (remix)
7. Rhythm Is Gonna Get You
8. Anything For You
9. Here We Are
10. Get On Your Feet
11. Cuts Both Ways (WASN'T AS BIG A HIT AS THE REST, BUT WAS
STILL A HIT and SHE RECEIVED a MAJOR SONGWRITING
AWARD FOR IT, ISN'T ON CD)
12. Don't Wanna Lose You
13. Coming Out of the Dark
14. Live For Loving You (ISN'T ON CD)
15. Christmas Through Your Eyes
16. I See Your Smile
17. Go Away
18. Always Tomorrow
This would have been perfect. There is an ample 21+ minutes left to add music to this CD, but these 4 hits, among others, aren't here. Incidently, LIVE FOR LOVING YOU is my favorite, a huge hit that they still play on the radio, that isn't here. Maybe that's what really fueled my criticism. However, songs like CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM, HERE WE ARE, and I SEE YOUR SMILE, among others, truly make this CD 5 Stars!!!!! Don't these songs just make you feel like you're on some tropical island? Its so perfect its just amazing. No one has ever and will ever create music so versatilly (I hope I spelled that right) as Gloria Estefan.
Take my advice, get this CD anyway. And pick up copies of CUTS BOTH WAYS, INTO THE LIGHT, PRIMITIVE LOVE, and THE EYES OF INNOCENCE, eventually. LET IT LOOSE is the only predecessing album covered here, but you might want to get it anyway, since it has the album version of 1-2-3 on it. (THE REMIX IS HERE). The others have undispensable songs on them. Whether you get them used or new from AMAZON, they are worth the investment. One listen, and you will know.

This is the Gloria Estefan CD to buy for her mid 80's to early 90's radio mega-hits. Fans of that era in her music will love this CD, because all of the ballads like "Can't Stay Away From You," and "Here We Are" are on this compilation. Plus, all of the ground-breaking dance hits are here like "1-2-3," and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You." This "1-2-3" is completely different from the Let It Loose version, and I think the version on Greatest Hits is the one most often played on the radio. There's also four new songs at the end, well they were "new" at the time. :-) Among them are "I See Your Smile," and "Always Tomorrow," which became very popular, and both are uplifting. That's part of the reason I love Gloria so much. She's fun, has good messages, and a wonderful sense of humor. She's one of the most innovative performers of this time. Oh yeah, and her music is awesome too! I would recommend this for anyone who's a true pop music fan.

This CD reconfirms Epic's commitment to making Gloria Estefan a manufactured superstar. A limited talent at best, she started off as the singer in Miami Sound Machine, where she should have stayed. Earlier MSM hits like the bubbly "Bad Boy" and "Falling in Love" are ignored here, but for some reason they chose to include the MSM hits "Conga" (never could stomach that one) and the listenable "Words get in the Way". That track is the only good one on this CD. Once she became Miss Cuban hootchie-cootchie mama, quality was thrown aside for utter banality. But everybody loves a superstar, right? Even if mediocrity "gets in the way". Unbelievably, MSM made a return without her on the soundtrack to the forgettable Sylvester Stallone film "The Specialist", with the tribal-sounding dance chart hit "Jambala", which turned out to be better than anything recorded with Estefan. Hunt that one down, and forget this.

This is one of the most enjoyable Greatest Hits package, in the lines of the "Immaculate Collection",(Madonna's Hits Package). From "Conga" to "Always Tommorrow" this hits album flows very well. Included on this hits package is among her best work, "Get On Your Feet", "1-2-3"(the remix), "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You"(it got a lot of people), but the premiere songs on this album are her superballads, "Don't Wanna Lose You"(we almost did), "Anything For You"(her first #1), the inspirational "Coming Out Of The Dark", and two of my personal favorites, "Can't Stay Away From You"(the ultimate ballad) and the very excellent "Here We Are"(which should have been a #1 hit), besides these classics she added another hit to her list with her very positive "I See Your Smile". All those hits, WOW!, from a woman who really did start the latin invasion, you go GLORIA!

To Gloria Estefan, our world is a global village of sensual sounds, exotic rhythms, and passionate words. On "Greatest Hits" we get 14 eclectic tracks of well balanced, harmonious, music with a Latin edge. Four of these tracks were previously unreleased and are superb. "Christmas Through Your Eyes" is a daunting ballad for anytime of the year, about seing life as her precious children do. And the sassy "Go Away" will make you grin & waggle your finger at that naughty man of yours!
I remember when Ms. Estefan was not out front yet and their band, "The Sound Machine", played Ybor City at free concerts. I knew then, by the driving percussions, wailing horns & her sensual vocals--their rhythm was gonna get us all!
A superb addition for "best of" collections.
