I was wondering, who would review this and not like it. Anyway, Whenever I stumbled upon this series I was quite happy. Way back when, one of my favorite books was a compilation of Dragonlance art from the 80's I think. Great pics in this and wonderful works of art.

Fantasy and Sci Fi lovers and art lovers in general will be pleased with this.

These annuals seem to be getting bigger every year, yet there's not less quality involved. Great book for reference of what's going on in this field. Great stuff as usual. Digital art is gaining pretty fast these days, but it's still looking good.
Delightfully mixed bag - Review written on January 19, 2008

This is the 14th volume of what I expected to be a short-lived series. So, it's long lived and hopefully that's the case for many years to come. The first thing to note is the sheer size of this book and the bargain it is at just uner $40. Reproduction quality, variety of skills and styles as well as the range of subject matter are all continuing highlights to look forward to year afer year. The large format makes this a sit-down-and-get-lost tome that has such a delightfully mixed bag approach to presenting artwork highlighting the width and breadth of the genre that encompasses SF, Fantasy and Horror. From institution illustrations to sequential art this book has it all, or at least as much range as it can present in one sitting. It's also a great place to showcase both old and new artists in an established format that does it's best to spread the wealth of ideas from cover to cover. The only downside is the fact that some of the images are produced full page while the majority have to share the page with two to four other artists. However, few artists would complain about that format.
Just being in the book lends itself to the artists' elevated status in the genre.
I'd love to list my favorites in this book but like every year they are too many and after all, what's the point?
Pick your own. Even listing the artists is such that it's an act of futility. From Martiniere to Manchess this is the book to own. If you don't know the artists I just listed, it's worth your time and money to find out what they do along with all the others.

Its gotten to the point where the yearly release of the new "SPECTRUM" book of the year's fantasy art has become a traditional EVENT with me. I've been buying them since "Spectrum 1", and have never been disappointed in their choice of fantasy art and artists. The books are even getting slightly larger over the years! As with any yearly colection, some years are vintage, and some are vinegar...but that's an entirely subjective decision. The Spectrum series always gives one plenty to look at and think about, and their text analysis of the year in review is always amusing. The color reproductions are of the highest quality...you get hundreds of exceptional reproductions of the year's best fantasy art. If you've never looked at the series, start now. If, like me, you are a long time fan, keep extending those book shelves, because as long as they keep publishing this yearly treat, we'll be buying them

I can only agree with everyone who has rated this wonderful book. There is a shortage of decent fantasy art books on the market, besides the fantastic work of Brian Froud. I just don't like the work of say, Amy Brown and her sleazy fairies. At least this book offers not only beautifully executed work, but incredible inspiration for ideas of your own. Yes, I am a fine artist.

I have each of the books and 14 is better than ever. It is a great book individually and all of them are wonderful. The art work spans both Sci-Fi and the Fey. I will continue to purchase it for a long time to come.
Not As Good As Spectrum 13 - Review written on November 23, 2007

I received my hardcover copy yesterday and immediately sat down and went through it. I find myself liking Spectrum 13 better, even though Spectrum 14 has the new category "concept art." For me, Spectrum 14 had a lot of images that looked the same when viewed as a total image. Also, it had more places where all the images of one artist were all grouped together, instead of being spread out. I'm really not sure why the "concept art" was there - it didn't really seem to serve any purpose, especially with no info as to what they were trying to achieve with the concept. They could just as easily have been grouped with "unpublished" (another category I don't see the need for).

Of course, I'm not a member of the target audience for this publication - I'm just a person who loves beautiful things and uses the art's use of colour as ideas for my fibre creations.

This edition of Spectrum is, I believe, the finest of them all, and that is saying something. Each fall a new collection appears, and each time we are treated to the most wondrous images of fantastic art to be seen anywhere. There are familiar names as well as new ones and all are exceptional talents. It's a celebration of dark beauty, and every page is a pleasure. The jury did an impeccable job in selecting the work.
You won't be disappointed.

This is a stunning continuation of one of the best overviews of what is being prodced in the world of fantasy/SF art today. Literally, from begining to end the work is superlative. The reproductions are top notch. Just a fantastic display. Its better than last years...and last years was FANTASTIC!!! Five stars. Easy. If you liked any of the past Spectrums or are looking to buy a first, get this one. You will love it.
