Live with a purpose - Review written on August 04, 2008

My copy, from Christmas 2004, says "over 15 million copies sold". I see cover copy on books in stores now showing 20 or 30 million sold.
So, this is not a new or little-known book, and obviously, many people have read it and find it very good, and indeed it is. Warren gives five Biblical purposes for life, consistently using scripture (in many different translations where they help convey meaning). And while the book does occasionally reference other "PDL" products like the journal, it doesn't appear to be a sales tool for these other products.
In fact, the The Purpose-Driven Life Journal in conjunction with a good study translation (New American Standard, New Internation, or King James) is a great way to study and make notes.
Beautiful Book on the True Meaning of Christianity - Review written on May 14, 2008

Since there are over a thousand reviews posted here, one might ask: why am I writing another one? It is because I feel this beautiful book, so eloquently and accessibly written, has much to offer Roman Catholics as it has to offer non-Catholics, and Rev. Rick Warren continues to be one of the most loving and positive ministers in the public arena. He has managed to write a deeply meaningful book here about how to live as a Christian, without saying anything negative about anybody or anyone else's church. This is no small feat. We Christians are tempted at every turn to criticize one another. Rev. Rick teaches love. Anyone who thinks this is superficial or insipid should, I believe, reconsider. To love one's neighbors and one's enemies is for me the hardest thing about being Christian; it is at the core of the Christian explosion of the First Century, and it remains the core of Christian teaching today. --- Just about every page of this book is inspiring, and Rev. Rick has managed to impart to the reader complex theology in wonderfully simple terms. ---- When theology is too difficult, when it is opague or unreadable, what good does it do for most Christians? Well, this is a book with deep theological roots that is for everyone. Highly recommended. And also an excellent gift. ---- Let me quote Rev. Rick in closing: "Jesus taught that spiritual maturity is never an end in itself. Maturity is for ministry!" (p.231 of the hard cover.)
This book helped strengthen my religious beliefs and my relationships with my family, god and my community. - Review written on April 17, 2008

I feel compelled to write a review on this book because of the impact it had on me. I love this book, I found it comforting and very thought provoking. It honestly has changed my thoughts about my own spirituality and has given me great perspective on priorities in my life. This book is written in short, easy to read chapters that allow you to reflect easily at each point. I found myself re-reading certain chapters and marking pages that especially touched me. This book is pure goodness, it made me feel grounded, allowed me to see how I lived my life, and what needed to be changed, and what was already working for me. This book and its wisdom will stay with me for some time, and I imagine that I will read parts of it over and over in the future. It helped strengthen my religious beliefs and my relationships with my family, god and my community.
What you are is Gods gift to you; what you do with yourself is your gift to God - Review written on March 17, 2008

Rick Warren's book The Purpose Driven Life uses over a thousand scripture versus from many different versions of the Bible to explain why we were born on this planet and what our purpose is. The author provides a Danish proverb that states: "What you are is God's gift to you; what you do with yourself is your gift to God." Warren also provides John Wesley's motto: "Do all the good you can in all the ways you can in all the places you can at all the times you can to all the people you can as long a you can."
Our mission in life as outlined in this book is a continuation of Jesus' mission on earth. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus said: "Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to do everything I have told you." This is the Great Commission.
Rick Warren states that the following two statements are what his book is all about:
1. "Live life with a due sense of responsibility, not as those who do not know the meaning of life but as those who do." (Ephesians 5:15) and
2. Don't let the errors of evil people lead you down the wrong path and make you lose your balance." (2 Peter 3:17)
He states that: "God's five purposes for your life:
1. `Love God with all your heart': You were planned for God's pleasure, so your purpose is to love God through worship.
2. `Love your neighbor as yourself': You were shaped for serving, so your purpose is to show love for others through ministry.
3. `Go and make disciples': You were made for a mission, so your purpose is to share God's message through evangelism.
4. `baptize them into....": You were formed for God's family, so your purpose is to identify with his church through fellowship.
5. "teach them to do all things': You were created to become like Christ, so your purpose is to grow to maturity through discipleship."
This book brings tell it like it is. The author is not afraid to be blunt when he tells us that we are not on this earth to be happy, rich, and powerful or other self-centered ideals. We are here to serve God not to consume. In this temporary body we are to prepare and mature in Christ for eternal spiritual life in Heaven.
This is an important and easy to read book. It is broken down into 40 small chapters meant to be read and thought about one day per chapter. The author provides a question to ponder at the end of each chapter and a group of questions at the end of the book with recommended reading for Bible studies. I recommend this book to readers of all ages and nationalities with a caveat. The author's views will not be popular with those who do not want to serve.
40 purpose-driven days... - Review written on January 27, 2008

This is possibly one of the -- if not THE -- most essential self-help books out there. The Purpose Driven Life focuses on your spiritual growth and fulfillment and encourages us to leave other aspects -- like financial success -- aside. What is the most fulfilling thing for a human being? In other words, what on earth are you here for? To discover God's purpose for his or her life. Rick Warren encourages the reader to read one chapter a day, for the book contains forty chapters (and as many Christians know, the forty days thing is mentioned a great deal in the bible). He also suggests keeping a journal and highlighting important phrases and points in the book. His suggestions are dead-on, and I read one chapter a day. There are five important lessons to learn to live a purpose-driven life:
1. Love God with all your heart.
2. Love your neighbor as yourself.
3. Go and make disciples (to share God's message with others)
4. To become part of a "fellowship" in church
5. To grow to maturity through discipleship
Reading this book helped me understand a lot of things and was a stepping stone into becoming a better Christian. I have applied a lot of the things I read here in my daily life and as a Christian, and have prayed for strength in areas I know I need work on. I enjoyed all of the chapters, but the ones I liked the most were the ones in purpose #2 ("You Were Planned for God's Pleasure") and purpose #3 ("You Were Created to Become Like Christ"). But I also got a lot out of the chapters that center on my shortcomings, like the ones about discipleship and fellowship. This book will make you evaluate your life and help you become a better person -- much better than self-help books that center on finding fleeting and, at the end of the day, empty achievements in your finances and love life. Warren is in no way saying that these things aren't important, but they shouldn't be the most important things in one's life either, because you will not find what you are looking for from these things. They should not be your first priority. God should come first in your life, no matter what. I recommend The Purpose-Driven Life. This is one book you shouldn't go without (not as important as the bible, but you know what I mean).
A Template to Check Your Christian Activities Against - Review written on January 23, 2008

In the process of praying, reading the Bible, attending services, witnessing, and following the commands of the Bible, it's easy to forget to check overall on how you are doing in pursuing activities that are good for Christians. I was given this book by my son as a Christmas present and began reading it immediately. I didn't follow the format as I was instructed, but read ahead and then reread sections later.
I gained two benefits from the book that I didn't expect:
1. I became aware that I wasn't doing any small group Bible study and that such study and fellowship would be good for me.
2. I realized I hadn't tried any new ways to serve God in almost a year and a half. It's time for me to try some new things while continuing to do what I have been doing.
Like all books about Christian living, you'll get out of it what your heart is open to receiving.
Those who like to tie back everything they read to the source will find this book a little frustrating because you have to turn to the back to see the source of the Bible quotes.
Those who like short lists telling them exactly what to do will also be a little frustrated because the advice mainly consists of subject areas (pleasure for God, being part of God's family, becoming more like Jesus, serving God, and pursuing a mission) to think about and pray over.
Listen to the small, still voice of the Holy Spirit as you read this book.
May you be blessed in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit!
Absolutely Inspirational - Review written on January 14, 2008

Purpose driven Life is an absolute must read. The Book is not a self help book, but a self awareness, life altering experience. It actually allows the reader to discover that our individual purpose in life is not for ourselves. It is a journey that creates a sort of comfort and understanding about our individual existance, it allows the reader to transend traditional miopic conciousness. It is not about us.
If you are lost, confused, and just don't get why in the world you are here, please read Purpose Driven Life. The journey is difficult, and it does require that you discuss ideas and thoughts daily, but it is well worth it. Have discussion parties, join a discussion group at Google Groups if you must. But do something!!! You realize that your individual purpose drives you and inspires you. I joined a group, purposedrivenlifeinlosangeles, and it has changed my life.
