Editorial Reviews and Product Descriptions

Description

Mika's offering, Live In Cartoon Motion, captures the star at his show stopping best, thrilling a sold-out audience of 4,000 fans at France's famed L'Olympia venue. Mika's Live In Cartoon Motion marks the first time the energetic star's lively show has been filmed in its entirety. Directed by Matt Askem (David Bowie, Paul Weller,) it captures Mika's flamboyant stage presence, with the star performing most of the songs from his 3 million selling worldwide debut album Life In Cartoon Motion, including "Relax, Take It Easy," "Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)," and the global chart-topping "Grace Kelly." Using 10 cameras and shot in high definition, the DVD also features a documentary chronicling Mika's escapades throughout his much heralded world tour, a highly-raved-about romp that the caused San Francisco Chronicle to proclaim the star "an incredible showman." Nominated for two MTV Europe Music Awards earlier this week, the tireless star will tour Europe this fall, returning to his native England for a series of live shows in late November and early December.

DVD gives you more than you expect - Reviewed on 2008-09-23

Having first purchased and listened to MIKA's CD "Life in Cartoon Motion" it was obvious that there was more going on than just the music. A few YouTube clips piqued my interest, and this DVD "LIVE in Cartoon Motion" confirmed that MIKA has a whole storyline built up alongside the music. There are several recurring characters in the work, Lollipop Girl, Big Girl, Billy Brown, etc. Several characters are brought to life onstage as part of the live show, which has a sprawling, carnival atmosphere.
This DVD is not just concert footage, but contains solo acoustic performances, officially produced music videos and a mini-documentary about MIKA and his bandmates on a round-the-world tour. Interestingly the song lyrics change slightly when the music is performed live, the artist's prerogative, of course. MIKA says in one of the interview segments that he is dyslexic and cannot read music, even more novel in light of his classical training at the Royal College of Music.
Altogether, "LIVE in Cartoon Motion" gives more than one would expect, and is worth buying.

I own over 25 DVD Concerts and consider Mika's Live in Cartoon Motion the best one. One of the few I've watched over and over. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to see a really fun concert with the audience on their feet throughout jumping up and down to the music!

First of all, in my opinion, Mika is one of the most talented, refreshing new performers to come along in a long while. He's got the whole package: looks, voice, originality, song writing genius, and musicianship.

Although I enjoyed the dvd, I was quite disappointed in the visuals. The description states that it was filmed in high definition but that was not evident. The film was dark, sometimes blurry. The camera work was very mediocre.

The sound quality was outstanding. No problems there.

The concert itself could have been better although I suspect that a lot of dialog and other good stuff were likely edited out. When he was about to sing "Happy Ending", he called a female vocalist to sing with him but only introduced her as a friend. No name mentioned which was really odd. Overall there was a bit too much silliness for my taste. I really could have done without the animal costumes.

The interview sections didn't really convey much information about Mika. He and the band joked and acted silly a lot. I would have preferred to hear more discussion about how the band came together, what their other interests are and their backgrounds in general.

Hopefully the next dvd will be better. I'm rating it a 4 because I did enjoy it despite the flaws.
