Editorial Reviews and Product Descriptions

Description

Led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart broke down barriers and redefined what it meant to be a rock star. Now, on the first release in the new Legendary Albums Live series, they revisit their very first triumph, live on stage, in front of an ecstatic audience. Thrill as they play their legendary debut album Dreamboat Annie live for the first time ever. The band tears into their hits "Crazy On You" and "Magic Man" and covers classics by Led Zeppelin, The Who and Pink Floyd, all of which inspired them as they were writing and recording Dreamboat Annie. Heart's first-ever live DVD, formatted to 16:9 and featuring a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio mix, and loaded with interviews and other special features.

Thirty-one years after Heart released its breakthrough album Dreamboat Annie, the Seattle-based band has made a DVD companion to that record. The concert performance for Heart: Dreamboat Annie Live was recorded in April 2007 at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles. The rest of the DVD includes documentaries on the band, along with interviews with Ann and Nancy Wilson--the sisters who are Heart. When Heart exploded onto the rock music scene in the 1970's, they were an anomaly: Women were either in girl groups or played secondary roles in bands. Not the Wilsons. With raven-haired Ann singing with a powerful voice that's equal parts Janis Joplin and Robert Plant, and blonde Nancy playing the guitar the way only men are supposed to, they took center stage, literally and figuratively. Their bandmates came and went, but Heart was all about the working and familial relationship between the sisters. Seasoned performers, Ann and Nancy shine in the concert footage.! Age has barely tempered Ann's vocals, which are strong and fierce throughout, particularly singing "Crazy on You" and "Black Dog" (a favorite Led Zeppelin song of theirs). Heart purists will scoff that original guitarist Roger Fisher and drummer Michael Derosier are absent from the DVD, but Craig Bartock and Ben Smith do a formidable job as their respective replacements. Heart has always been best heard live. Yes, their songs sound crisper and clearer on CDs, but it's their live performances where their passion and energy truly shine through. Dreamboat Annie Live doesn't replace a concert experience, but it's a worthwhile simulation. --Jae-Ha Kim

I've seen bad concerts before but this one takes the cake. It look's like Ann Wilson took the cake as well. nudge, nudge...say no more.

This Dreamboat Annie Live Heart Concert is playing on MTV HD. It looks spectacular in high definition! Has anyone heard if this title will be released on Blu-ray disc? It needs to be. As a Heart fan from the beginning this is an excellent performance of the Dreamboat Annie album. Please release this title on Blu-ray.

I first learned of this while watching DirecTV's channel 101 where they show lots of music related programs, and original concerts. I saw 'Heart - Dreamboat Annie' in the programming guide, and thought hmmm,, what's this? When I started watching it I couldn't believe it. Here was Heart performing their first album in sequence, start to finish. I was pleasantly floored. When I learned it was available on DVD, I was thrilled.

I have seen Heart live in various stages of their career, and oh sure I've heard Magic Man and Crazy On You live plenty of times,,, but have I ever seen, or heard Heart backed with strings, and all the instrumentation to perform all the songs on Dreamboat Annie? NO, not ever!!!!

So, do you need to be a complete Heart fan to enjoy this? Probably not, but it surely helps if you are a fan, and are familiar with the album. To me, it is a pure gem. Hearing songs like 'Soul Of The Sea', and 'How Deep It Goes' makes me appreciate, and love the album even more than I did. Watching them perform it live 30 years later also made me realize just how lush and accomplished some of the songs are especially for being a debut album! It also shows that a truly great album doesn't sound a bit dated, even after 30 years.

Also incuded on the DVD are interviews providing some insight to the albums creation, and at the end of the albums live performance, you are treated to Heart covering Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and The Who too!!

This is just a great idea, and here's hoping there will be many more in the 'Legendary Live Album' series. Imagine some of the possibilities??

I would pay triple the cost of this DVD, if not more... Blu-Ray please please please???

If you like the original album of the same title you'll like this. Since a lot of the songs on this album were acoustic there is sort of an "unplugged" feel about this concert and the covers are great as usual. This album is easily equal to "Live in Seattle". It is interesting to hear the band perform songs they had written before they were famous and still do so with the same enthusiasm.
Don't let any of these pseudo-intellectual critics fool you. This is Heart before MTV and it is a pleasure. There is nothing wrong with these performances - in fact they are almost note for note like the record. This was clearly a good idea and one worth preserving.
