It's difficult to fault Marc Broussard's intentions in releasing this collection of mostly covers as the follow-up to his 2004 breakthrough Carencro. He's intent on showing his roots in the uplifting soul music that he clearly loves. However, it's too early in his nascent career to be going the Rod Stewart route. Broussard's committed, grainy voice works well with these R&B standards and obscurities, even if the arrangements generally stick close to the originals. Yet he can't help but come up short singing timeless classics such as Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues," Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long," and Al Green's "Love and Happiness." Broussard is more convincing uncovering hidden nuggets such as Bobby Womack's slow dance "Harry Hippie," Rance Allen's gospelized "Let the Music Get Down in Your Soul," and the frisky funk of Stevie Wonder's "You Met Your Match." He also dusts off Blood, Sweat & Tears' "I Love You More than You'll Ever Know," sweating out the tune's inherent soulfulness. Toby Lightman swings into Tammi Terrell's part for a peppy, finger-snapping take on the sweet Gaye/Terrell duet "If I Could Build My Whole World Around You." Not surprisingly, Broussard's sturdy self-penned ballad "Come in from the Cold" pales somewhat in this heady company. It does, however, show his songwriting abilities haven't diminished, even if he apparently needs more time to compose another album's worth of his own material. --Hal Horowitz

You can cry the blues so..I feel the smells, I taste your life. The stories are are from home,so familar andmake my heart remember a different time I had lost. Hooray I am still here after 54 years. yeah old but not dead. Gods gift go with your roots and add spice carefully to the gumbo. Families are great! Good kin and especially the bad. They have the most to tell. Stay straight with the man buy high and sell low it builds character. My sister and I listen to you from alabama to arkie. We go to sleep with your words above us and your voice sounds like all the men we love to love. She is a red head so watch out. Proud of you!!!

This is a great album, by an artist that knows his roots. Marc Broussard is definitely Saving the 'Soul' of music by reintroducing the great music of Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, and Marvin Gaye (to name a few) to a new generation. His band is always on point and you can't help but be moved by his soulful voice. Great journey into the past!

If anyone wants another "Carenco" from Mr. Broussard, they're going to be very disappointed. If, however, you're looking for some good old school soul music, this is the one for you. His covers are as good, if not better, than the originals, and the extra cut on the Amazon edition is truly amazing.

I was completely delighted when I heard this cd for the first time and knew I had to add it to my collection. Already a fan of Marc Broussard, I had no idea of his superb talent in the soulful blues arena. This cd will leave nothing to guesswork in this regard. I highly reccomend adding it to your own personal collection and eagerly await Marcs' next project.

This guy has a great voice. A rich voice. A soulful voice. But he is not Marvin Gaye, he's not Al Green, and he sure as hell is not Otis Redding, and he insists on forcing the comparisons by attempting to sing just like his heroes over arrangements that are virtually identical to the originals. When he sings lesser known songs ("Harry Hippy") or the lone self-penned tune ("Come In From the Cold"), the results are magical. Here's hoping he takes the road less travelled next time around.
