While the restless artisanship of Paul Simon's music has been previously anthologized more than once, this double-disc-plus-DVD set instantly takes its place as the most comprehensive yet musically insightful overview of his solo career. Six tracks from the singer's Grammy-winning triumph Graceland, the 1986 collection that both reinvented Simon's career and pushed world music into a well-deserved spotlight, serve as the collection's focal point. They bridge the more traditional '70s singer-songwriter fare Simon pursued after his split with partner Art Garfunkel and the often openly experimental avenues that more recently led to his rewarding 2006 collaboration with Brian Eno, Surprise. Simon's innate artistic curiosity is further underscored by the album's creative sequencing, which eschews strict chronology for a tack that weaves the songs into a more musically and thematically cohesive tapestry. The bonus DVD culls together visual materials that range from the expected videos (including a turn with Mickey Mantle in the early "Me and Julio," the signature, Chevy Chase-starring "You Can Call Me Al," "The Boy in the Bubble," and "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" from Graceland) and TV performances that include a plaintive "Mrs. Robinson" from a 1970 Dick Cavett show and three era-spanning appearances on Saturday Night Live, including a warm 1976 duet with George Harrison on "Homeward Bound" that legend says was nearly the catalyst for a full onstage Beatles reunion. --Jerry McCulley

If you like Paul Simon, there is nothing to dislike about this package. Having a video makes a difference if you really haven't seen too much of him. Paul Simon has never been afraid to explore music and while his pieces are clearly "Simon" there are distinct phases to what he was doing. I always respected that he did not seem to pander to the pop audience.

This is an amazing album. Paul simon is a musical genius whose music is one of a kind. My family loved it when I got it as a gift for them. I knew I made the right decision.

I don't know how essential this box set is, as a few tracks on the second CD seem a bit superfluous, but for those who don't have any Paul Simon CDs or albums then this is as good a place to start as any. Included is a nice retrospective of his long career with a DVD that has a few video clips of Simon over the years, including appearances on Saturday Night Live and the Dick Cavett Show. It is great as a gift as the 2 CD's and DVD are nicely packaged. For my taste, the reunion of Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park in 1981 still stands out as the best set of their songs together, althought Old Friends Live on Stage is worth considering as well, which comes in a deluxe box set.

The CD 1 song's is what I expecing and searching for since first listen when study in Primary School (now I am 50!), so it wonderful!

The CD 2, not so impress, but the DVD quality both video & audio is a shame. Realize this was record long time, so audio might not be like nowaday. Over all with CD 1 is my personally worthed.

The Essential Paul Simon is a wonderful and eclectic mix of Paul Simon tunes from his solo career. There are the old favorites and some pieces that only the Paul Simon enthusiast would know. I was thrilled to hear some songs that aren't as well known such as "Stranded in a Limousine" and "Adios Hermanos". The DVD that comes along with the CDs is, for lack of a better word, awesome. There are 6 music videos, a rare interview from his younger years, and a host of SNL clips. This compilation really showcases the musical genius that is Paul Simon. It's no wonder he was selected to be the first recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Award for Popular Music! No other singer/songwriter has had such a wide-spread and powerful effect on our world as Paul Simon. This is perfect for the Paul Simon fanatic or someone who still needs to be introduced to wonderful world of Paul Simon's music.
