A wonderful suspenseful book - Reviewed on 2008-09-18
I have seen this movie numerous times--to the point where I can quote scenes. I just love the suspense and the interesting storyline so much!
And then I realized it was based on a book ...
Ira Levin is obviously an amazing writer. A former playwright, his novels have such imagery and action, it is no wonder his books are so effortlessly translated to the screen.
Rosemary Woodhouse so desperately wants to have a good home and a big happy family in NYC. A small town Catholic girl from Omaha, she moved to the big city and found the love of her life, Guy Woodhouse, actor extraordinaire. They have finally gotten into a good apartment house, The Brahm, and all she needs now is to get pregnant. Eerie and suspicious activities abound and all of the sudden her simple dream seems to be crushed under some "plot" against her ...
Supernatural events, doubt, and suspense drive this interesting and compelling plot forward. Perfectly selected words and phrases make the dialogue real. And intense imagery puts you right into 7E at the Brahm.
Especially this bargain edition, Rosemary's Baby is a quick and rewarding read. Not by any means "important" literature, but an excellent example of developed story and writing.
I highly recommend this book, and even read the author's Afterward. Interesting to know that without this book and its film adaptation, so many other events may not have occurred.
