Description

Twenty Americans are stranded in Palau, the South Pacific paradise some call the 8th natural wonder of the world, where colorful wildlife, dense jungles and an underwater world beyond belief are haunted by the wreckage and remnants of World War II. From the beginning, the game will be changed in a dramatic way: everything the Survivors have come to expect will be wiped out in the first 10 minutes. Who will outwit, outplay, and outlast all others in Palau?

Broadcast in early 2005, Survivor Palau was the tenth season of the kingpin reality show, and one of the best. The challenges were often brutal, and the cast was diverse and interesting: Tom, the NYC firefighter, one of the most dominating competitors in the history of the show; gangly dolphin trainer Ian; commanding Jolanda; tattooed fireball Angie; Southern gentleman Bobby Jon; towering Coby; redneck James; Vegas showgirl Janu; schoolteacher Wanda, who wrote her own lyrics for, and didn't stop singing, Survivor-themed songs; and arch-eyebrowed Stephenie. Before the season was over, there would be a setting of teams using a "schoolyard pick" system that eliminated two of the 20 contestants right off the bat, some romance, a shark kill, the first appearance of Exile Island (which would be a bigger factor in later seasons), a marathon final-three challenge with a surprising ending, and a contestant who some fans considered the best female competitor ever and others considered the most overrated.

Each season of Survivor has its signature moments, and in Palau two challenges stood out. One was the two tribes marching in a circle in the surf, each carrying weights while trying to catch up to the other tribe. The other was a slugfest in which contestants from the two tribes stood on a small platform and tried to knock each other into the water. Two of the contestants turned out to be popular enough to make a return appearance in a later season. On the DVDs are 45 minutes of featurettes with new interviews of Tom, Ian, Stephenie, Bobby Jon, Katie, Jen, Gregg, and Caryn remembering highlights of the season. The eight then broke into two groups of four to record spirited and nostalgic commentary tracks on a total of five episodes. In a well-meaning statement of the obvious, the menu warns against listening to the commentaries if you don't already know who won. --David Horiuchi

The best of all released seasons so far ! - Reviewed on 2008-03-18

If your considering purchasing a box set, this followed by the original in Borneo & Pearl Islands would be my 2nd and 3rd recomendations.

The cast was so likable. Bobby John was my absolute favourite surivor of all time. He wasa never slacking off, he amde friendships, he trusted people, he ahad ethics, he was athletic - if only had had lit that fire and made it to the merge instead of Stephanie, and the final two would have been Ian and Tom --- well, let's jsut say it would have been an A+ al around !

Sorry Stephanie fans, but asides from her athletic ability her feeling of entitlemnet was to arrogant and annyoying to watch. I am glad the merged tribe did not fall for her sob story and voted her off fairly quickly. I can't decide if I dislike her for getting rid of JOLANDA and ruining the Tibe's chances of doing well at the very start or the mean spirited immature (and I will add almost 30 yr old) KATIE for making it to the final two !

This season has some of the toughest and most exciting challanges I have ever seen on survivor. Even the characters you didn't like much at least made you laugh (AKA James and Karen!)

Alot of fun moments, sad ones and twists. Also, guys the scenery is breathtaking. Anyone watching this season with an HDTV will agree :)

I was so glad Bobby Jon was brought back on the very next season (Guatemalla) because he really was deserving.

Hope this review helps !

One of the Best Survivor seasons - Reviewed on 2007-11-30

Having watched mostly all survivor seasons on T.V this was one of my favourites, so finding out it was available on DVD i purchased it straight away. A great selection of people was put together for this season and it shows how thinking and smarts will always beat muscle and braun anyday. the elder tribe led by Tom were enjoyable to watch. seeing them dominate the other tribe and then eventually turn on each other was why this season never really had a dull moment. other tribe mates Ian, Coby, Katie, Bobby John and Gregg were entertaininng and likeable in there own way. even the annoying grew on me Stephanie, Caryn and Janu. Overall this season is worth watching over again and the extra's are interesting to see how there strategies played out.

hope to be able to purchase other seasons like Thailand and Marquesas soon.

thanks, from Cooky in Aus.

This season had many things going for it -- characters that were colorful (James, Coby), eye candy (Jenn), and ones you'd root for (Angie, Steph, Bobby Jon, Tom). Most of the cast were highly likeable or at least enjoyable to watch, except maybe for Jolanda and Wanda (thank goodness they left early). Some great challenges, many broken alliances, a one-man tribe, the longest immunity challenge ever and even a laid-down torch all make for pretty riveting stuff. Eminently watchable and rewatchable...only wish they could have done more in terms of the extra features; the 4 featurettes didn't really whet the appetite of what went on behind the scenes or even offer never-before-seen footage. That apart, it was worth the buy, better than pearl islands and slightly edging out the all-stars version. I'm buying Australia (The Outback) next, though I'd really like to get my hands on the Africa series. Wonder when CBS will release it.

This has got to be the best survivor ever! It was really great to "relive" the whole Palau experience again. And to see how amazingly good and strong Tom was. He deserved the title. Totally! The dvd has some pretty good extras as well especially the cast commentaries. Worth every cent!
