I bought the Midland GXT650VP4 radios for hunting last year. Overall they are a very fine product. The rechardeable batteries lasted all day, although there was only infrequent talking taking place. The speaker system is clear and easy to understand what the other party is trying to communicate. However, the volumn level never gets very high. I've owned many of these FMRS/GMRS radios and these units easily transmitt much farther than all the other units. HOWEVER, they do not come close to the advertised 18 miles they advertise, in terms of real world, such as hunting. I also was with friends on the open road recently. When we were about 6 miles apart and I was around a corner and down a hill, I couldn't reach my friends. Just remember, the advertised 18 miles is "line-of-sight" and "ideal" conditions. I maintain you'll never encounter those conditions in normal activities. However, these comments are true of all these radios, this is not a negative comment regarding just these Midland units; it happens to all brands of these FMRS/GMRS radios. If you count on only a few miles in the woods and 6 to 8 miles on an open stretch of highway as more realistic numbers, you'll be happy with your purchase.
NOT water resistant at all....if it might get rained on, don't get - Reviewed on 2007-07-21

Got these radios so the wife and I could keep track of each other fishing. Living in Alaska, it doesn't take long to get seperated on the rivers and we like to know where each other are, especially for bear safety. Had their first real trial yesterday, and they started out working well. We could talk clearly to each other over about a mile distance with some small hills in between us, and that for our needs is probably an adequate range. The calls were clear and easy to hear, really have no complaints with the reception, transmission, or sound.

These radios are billed as "water resistant." I'd like to inform people that these are NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, water resistant. We got a little wet after a while, and I had my radio under chest waders in a coat pocket. The same pocket that my Motorola Razr cell phone was in. Whether it was my perspiration or some moisture from the elements, the radio got condensation inside the screen, and shorted out. Didn't work at all. My wife's did the same thing.

When we got home, I pulled the batteries to dry them and they were already rusting inside at the contact points. They had only been damp for a couple of hours. They were not submerged, or even rained upon directly...they absorbed water vapor to the point of being useless. My cell phone, in the pocket next to the radio, worked fine and never had a hitch. I'm still not sure if they are going to dry and ever function again. In the process of figuring that out now, but regardless these are supposed to be rugged outdoor radios.

They might be good radios, but they aren't going to survive in my outdoors if they can't take a little moisture and humidity. It's almost like they actually sucked in the moisture, because the battery compartments had several drops inside. I'm going to be contacting Amazon for a refund.

Bottom line: Good radios, as long as it's indoors and dry. Bad if there's a chance of any exposure to moisture. I'm giving it three stars because when they work, they seem to work very well, but they are marketed as outdoorsy and rugged, which they are not if my Razr does a better job handling the elements then them.

Great Product!! Price is Reasonable. We were looking for a product to communicate from the lake back to the wife at the campsite. And the product worked superbly. Thus removing the fear for the wife while the senior husband was out on the lake night fishing. Thanks.

I tried this in Philadelphia. One person stood on the corner of 5th and South (Near Johnny Rockets) and I walked to 3rd an Monroe. I was 3 by 2 blocks away, CITY blocks and it was clear. When I got to 3rd and monroe, it started to get a little hissy, but we were far away at that point. Aside from that, it sounds 100% clear.

After it loses battery power, I was on the Ben Franklin in a car, and the other person was at the corner of 5th and Chestnut, it loses clarity. But the batteries were dying. I hadn't even charged them, it was straight out of the box.

I like the car charger, and the head set it comes with is cool to. The VoiceActivation works fine, but I really don't have a use for it.
