With hairy warts, a stern-looking unibrow and one extremely protruding buck-tooth, Nanny McPhee is a wonderfully comedic substitute for Mary Poppins in this entertaining family fantasy. By loosely adapting Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda children's books of the 1960s, OscarĀ®-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility) has also given herself the plum role of Nanny McPhee, who can tame even the most unruly children with a tap of her magic walking stick. Her latest challenge is the bratty brood of a recent widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), who's under pressure to find a new wife or lose his much-needed allowance from wealthy Aunt Adelaide (a tailor-made role for Angela Lansbury). His love for scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald) remains unspoken as he wincingly woos the eagerly merry widow Mrs. Quickly (Celia Imrie), but Brown's raucous rugrats have a plan to make things right, especially after they've come under the benevolent influence of Nanny McPhee, whose peculiar brand of discipline works wonders for everyone involved. Both quintessentially British and universally appealing, this wildly colorful comedy (thanks to a bold palette of costume and production design) was capably directed by Kirk Jones, whose appreciation for comic actors was equally apparent in his critically acclaimed 1998 comedy Waking Ned Devine. With just a hint of darkness to offset the whimsy, Nanny McPhee offers a splendid match of director, cast and material, guaranteed to please Wallace & Gromit fans and anyone else with a taste for British zaniness. --Jeff Shannon

Delightful family movie! - Reviewed on 2008-10-30

Nanny McPhee is a top notch family film. My husband and I enjoyed watching it and I'm looking forward to sharing it with my son and his family. Cedric Brown's children are full of mischief. They continually come up with ever more devious ways to rid themselves of their nannies and to get their father's attention. Though they achieve the former, the latter seems to be beyond their capabilities. That is until the arrival of the magical Nanny McPhee. The 7 Brown children are determined they will not succumb to Nanny McPhee and will send her packing just as the did the other 17 nannies. They didn't forsee the power of her love and the pounding of her magic cane. But even Nannie McPhee cannot stop their father from marrying the dreadful Mrs. Quickly!! What will happen? Can the children save the day?

I was able to preview this movie and decided I wanted to purchase the DVD. I found the movie for next to nothing here on Amazon, and bought it used (I paid under $9.00, shipping and all). I have had no problems with the DVD, it works great. It is a wonderful movie and it was probably one of the cheapest movies I have ever purchased. My 8 yr. old daughter expecially likes this movie.

Colin Firth was superb. Emma Thompson was superb. Nanny McPhee's character was awesome, the children were awesome. Nanny's physical transformation was wonderful and the musical score was magical. But what wasn't magical was Evangaline. What a dud. She just fell flat as a pancake. Nanny, beautified, had all the chemistry with "Dear Dad" Colin Firth and the ending just flopped with him hooking up with that boring old scullery maid with no personality and not much prior part to play in the story. Hence the 3 stars. Loved Emma Thompson, loved Colin Firth, loved the kids, didn't love the ending nor Evangaline.
