It is a great piece. Anyone that is a fan of any of the bands that play will be pleased. It is a great overall show. I would love to go this year!!!

"Jam in the Dam" may be the best jamband DVD to date. Unlike the epic scope of a Bonnaroo or High Sierra, this is an event that typically features only four bands. Thus the two disc DVD reflects the event in that what it lacks in diversity, it makes up with depth. All four musical acts are given a large share of screen time. Keller Williams' performance proves that he puts on the most dynamic one man show. Particle and the Disco Biscuits trip hard. If there was any doubt in your mind that Umphrey's McGee is filling the vacuum that Phish left, watch their set. It is dynamic, bombastic, intellectual, mind expanding and simply phenomenal. Pound for Pound, this block of music exceeds their own DVD "Wrapped Around Chicago." Beyond the music, the vignettes give the feel of what it's like to attend a jamband event in Amsterdam. The production for "Jam in the Dam" is tops. Creative video editing, soundboard audio and good camera work make this first rate. If you have a broad interest in jambands or are a fan of the featured groups, "Jam in the Dam" is essential watching.

I've been waiting for this to come out ever since I attended the festival last year. I had such a great time and was hoping that the DVD would measure up to my (admittedly sketchy) memory of the week. I'm happy to say that the people responsible for this did an amazing job. In my opinion, they successfully captured the spirit of the music as well as the city of Amsterdam on these 2 discs.
Interspersed with each band's performance are segments that include interviews with band members and festival organizers. Also during the interview segments there is some really sweet footage of the city. If you've never been there, this DVD offers a clear view of what is a unique European city. (There's also a fun vignette about a coffee shop)
While I liked watching these, I also like that the DVD menu has an option to view the performances without the interviews, so you can skip the talking and turn up the volume for the great music that's on here.
I'm sure some people will complain about the song selection, but there's no way they could have picked enough from each act and kept this to reasonable amount of discs. Personally, I have no complaints about what songs are included. Especially with the superb editing that's on this. They really did a great job to make this more than a standard concert DVD. One thing that stands out is all the shots from a camera on a boom that could rotate 360 degrees. With this camera, there are several long pans from above the crowd (in some spots just above their heads) to right up near a band member.
One song in particular that I'll mention is Keller Williams' "Breathe" If you're not familiar with Keller, he's a one man band who uses loops to create his songs. So he'll play a guitar riff, loop it, then move to the bass, etc. In the performance here, they edited the shots of him as he made each loop and spilt the screen to show them all at once. My description of that isn't doing it justice, but trust me, its awesome.
I don't want to ramble on any more, I'll sum it up by saying: this is a great DVD that is more than just the bands performing on stage and worthy of repeated viewings.
I highly, and I mean highly, recommend it. ;-)
