Description

Napoleon Dynamite is a new kind of hero, complete with a tight red 'fro, sweet moon boots, and skills that can’t be topped. Napoleon spends his days drawing mythical beasts, duking it out with his brother, Kip, and avoiding his scheming Uncle Rico. When t

As deadpan comedies go, Napoleon Dynamite stands in a class all its own. Played by John Heder, the title character is (in the words of critic Roger Ebert) "the kind of nerd other nerds avoid," a mouth-breathing dweeb with a mangy nest of orange hair, and ungainly features that suggest a perpetual state of half-conscious depression. He lives in Preston, Idaho (former home of 24-year-old director Jared Hess) with his thrill-seeking grandma and 32-year-old brother, and his days at high school consist mostly of being abused or ignored by indifferent classmates. Napoleon's sad-sack story doesn't offer the scathing, impassioned humor of Welcome to the Dollhouse because Hess (who cowrote the nearly plotless screenplay with his wife, Jerusha) doesn't have an angst-ridden axe to grind. Instead, the comedy (which exists in a tacky universe of worn-out rural suburbia) is so low-key that some will find it difficult to laugh, while others (i.e., those who feel superior to Napoleon) will have plenty of fun at Napoleon's expense. The result is a curiously uneven film, hilarious at times, but hampered by its own sense of affectionate mockery. An audience favorite at the Sundance film festival, Napoleon Dynamite may not be entirely lovable, but it's definitely unique. --Jeff Shannon

It grows on you - Reviewed on 2008-11-16

I am a high school teacher, that being said, I decided on the last day of
school that as a treat we would watch a movie. I borrowed Napoleon Dynamite from my brothers vast DVD collection. I had no idea what the movie was about but my students told me it was funny. I looked it up on IMDB to see its rating. It is PG because of the word "piss" and a man selling breast enlargement pills. Pretty tame stuff in this day and age.

I watched it three times in one day. The first viewing I was confused...it did not seem that funny. The second and third time I watched it I just laughed and laughed through out the whole movie.

It grows on you, and you will find yourself laughing about lines from the movie at odd times through out your life.

I do recommend this movie. It is just SWEET, in every sense of the word.
not a comedy at all, but worth watching at least once - Reviewed on 2008-11-01

well, this movie was entertaning for me, meanwhile it was slow but not boring

if you are sick and tired of movies packed with special features, super heroes, and unrealisitic stories of wizards or aliens invading our planet, then this is the timne to give yourself a break and watch a movie of a nerd going to school in idaho

at least you can think this could really happen somewhere in real world,

If you haven't seen this movie yet, i would say give it a try, but don't expect anything extraordinary

hope it helped

Dull, boring, and not funny either. I did not care for this at all.
I liked the opening credits though. After that, it was all downhill.

I have to say that my teenage boys like this movie a lot more than I do so maybe add some stars to this review if you're a teen.
The movie is an alleged comedy but the laughs and even the chuckles aren't easy to find here. The storys itself is a standard high school outcast story where the hero is a nerdy quiet and shy. As with most Hollywood stories about teens, the actors look way too old to even remember high school let alone be there. The lead actor Heder was 26, looked all of his 26 years and most of his costars appear to be better candidates for teachers than students.
Despite the lack of humor and the age issues, there is a very low key charm to the movie. Napoleon and his friends are likeable and you watch the movie to the end to see what happens (Not much). Give them some credit for appealing characters but the movie could have been much better if the charcters had some funny moments and more of a plot to work with. It's not a bad movie but it's not a very good one either.
