Oh to be free and frivolous, like Stuart Murdoch and his extensive cast of players as they engage The Life Pursuit. There's no "Take Your Carriage Clock and Shove It" or "Get Me Away from Here, I’m Dying" on this disc. Life has gotten easier, it seems, since Belle and Sebastian's early days. To boot, since 2003's Dear Catastrophe Waitress, the Belle cast has indulged a more 70s-era set of influences: Isn't that Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" beat on the funny "White Collar Boy," a near sequel to "Step Into My Office, Baby"? And how about the T-Rex touch on the opening of "The Blues Are Still Blue"? No worries, Belle and Sebastian retain their gleam flawlessly. A jaunty lift is still in their step, a carefree abandon that charms even as it also reaches to the 70s for the funk-meets-psychedelia, "Song for Sunshine." It's bright and breezy throughout (the titles tell some of the story: "Another Sunny Day" and "Funny Little Frog"), with memorably decorous, familiar bouncing rhythms marking much of the album. The downtone "Dress Up in You" and "Mornington Crescent" are spare and lovely, wide-open in their pacing. All the same, "For the Price of a Cup of Tea," almost triggers a sing-along with just its name. --Andrew Bartlett

I first came to know Belle & Sebastian when my pal Patrick put "Lazy Line Painter Jane" on for me. As I was preparing for a bus trip to Los Angeles, he said the song reminded him of me (you will find a boy tonight/ on the first bus out of town). I bought a few Belle & Sebastian albums since and enjoyed them but it was Dear Catastrophe Waitress which hooked me, and then lo and behold this album came out.

The Life Pursuit is just as good as Waitress and then some. Great tracks like "Sukie In The Grave Yard" and "The Blues Are Still Blue" show what a great and diverse band this is. The music kicks it, the lyrics are completely witty and the songs are actually very catchy. Highly recommended!

This is the type of album that you can play again & again without skipping songs. Probably the best of Belle & Sebastian.
Their best yet - Reviewed on 2008-01-25

Quite simply, this is the best Belle and Sebastian yet. I like it even more than "Boy With The Arab Strap". It's a bit rockier, which is good,
upbeat, infectious, every song is hummable to the extreme. Very smart music, and I love the reprise at the end. The lyrics are clever and if you don't find yourself identifying with something being said here, the group isn't suited for you, probably. But the lyrics and music all go together to create a very pleasing song cycle. Hope their next one is as infectious.

This is quite simply one of the best albums of all time. I have a wide range of musical tastes, and I like most of B & S's stuff. But while I consider "Sinister" and "Tigermilk" indie rock classics, "The Life Pursuit" is a masterpiece. If I didn't know better, I would have thought this was a greatest hits compilation. Funny lyrics, irresistible pop hooks, and a lush production make this album one for the ages. There is no discernable weakness to this album. It may not be "twee" enough for the hardcore fanbase, but pay them no mind. I understand where they're coming from, but I say that even if you hate their previous stuff, its worth a look. 3 listens and you will be hooked.

I would suggest looking for the deluxe edition with the six-song BBC performance DVD. They are a great live band, and this is a great document of a great band performing the best songs from a superlative album. And its only a few bucks more than the single disc version.

Scotland's for me!

This album made my "Best Albums of 2006" list (see http://www.amazon.com/Best-Albums-of-2006/lm/R3A0M7FT9VW902/ref=cm_lm_byauthor_title_full).
I own four of their albums but I think this is their best one yet. This one probably has the most bad language on it (usually not very prominent, but I still can't play this one with the kids around). Still, the album is solid from top to bottom and just solidifies my love for this band.
