Not Army Tough - Reviewed on 2008-07-25

Just got this cot yesterday, and I have mixed feelings about it. The length and width are great, but I have serious concerns about the construction. Anyone who has slept on a military issue cot of this style (I slept on one in Iraq for 11 months) knows they are built like rocks. But this cot wobbles forward and backward in a very disconcerting way. The brackets on the joints are undersized, and I think that is what leads to the instability. Secondly, the connectors for the endpoles are of a style (kinda like a dovetail joint) that is very likely to break during normal use (assembly and disassembly in particular). Army cots have a much better ball and socket type joint between the side and end poles. Lastly, this sucker is HEAVY. I'm talking like four or five times what it should weigh. Which makes me boggle even more at the wobbliness of it.

Overall, I think the poles are well constructed, but the joints are weak. Maybe a redesign is in order. But if you're careful not to put any forward/backward stress on the cot, I think it ought to hold out for a while. I'm 6' tall, so I've always hated the old 75" army cots for being too short for me (head and heals hit the end poles), but I'm going to return the slumberjack and get one of the issue cots instead. Proof that there is a reason that the army buys what it buys.

This cot is very well made and solid. No squeaks when you turn over. The only dissapointment I have is the fact that assembly could be easier. When you assemble the last end rail it is a struggle to streach the fabric enough to lock in the end bar. Hopefully the fabric relaxes over time to make set up easier. As far as quality.......excellent!

We are early seventies and sleeping on air mattresses, though comfortable makes it hard to get up, nothing to support you. So I decided on cots, which I should have done long ago. These cots by Slumberjack are wonderful; old-fashioned durability, easy to set up, though I have to use the handle of my hammer as a prybar to get the last part of the end bar to engage the post on the runner, however, for younger men this should not be needed. I have used these now twice while the nights were still fairly cold and I found it more comfortable to use a foam bedroll under me to provide better protection from the cold from below. Best of all, my wife now likes camping again.

I slept on this for a week straight with just a sleeping bag on top. First off, this cot is LARGE. You'll need ample space to set it up but you'll definately appreaciate it. It accomodated my Cabelas sleeping bag (which I later found out was also really a Slumberjack bag) perfectly.

Setup is fairly easy. Unfolding the frame is quick, flexing the canvas to get the cross-braces in take a little bit of getting used to but after doing it a few times you figure out the best ways and position to do it.

There is no squeaking, at all, with this cot. Also I never felt like the thing was going to collapse on me while I was sleeping. Tossing around I never heard the feet kick up off the floor or anything you sometimes hear from other flimsy cots.
