Description

In WITHOUT A PADDLE, three friends from Philadelphia decide to go on a canoeing trip in Oregon after the death of a friend. While canoeing down the Columbia River, the trio soon finds themselves in trouble as the river turns dangerous and they encounter a crazy mountain man who lives nearby.

To honor a childhood oath, three friends (Seth Green from Austin Powers and Party Monster, Matthew Lillard from SLC Punk and Scooby Doo, and newcomer Dax Shepard) head into the Oregon wilderness in search of lost treasure. After grappling with a bear, whitewater rapids, backwoods psychopaths, beautiful eco-terrorists, homophobia, and a very hairy Burt Reynolds, the boys face their fears and learn valuable life lessons about treasuring friendship and stuff. Dude, it's totally, like, Deliverance for the Gen-Y slacker set! Admittedly, it falls a bit short as a meditation on masculinity, but teen audiences will find plenty to enjoy. The interplay among Green, Lillard, and Shepard has a rambunctious enthusiasm that overcomes the predictability of the script. --Bret Fetzer

I really liked this movie. It was fun and interesting. My favorite part was the sweet tree fort those bisexual environmentalist tree hugging girls lived in and "Earth Mother." Haha omg. The movie is fairly fresh since the stereotypes the writers poke fun at are ignored for the most part by...hollywood cinema. The themes and plot is positive and refreshing. It didn't suck...It clearly had the potential to be one of those embarassing flicks that you wouldn't want to watch with your adolecent kids or vice versa.
Hippiechicks and Pot Farmers and Bears! Oh My! :) - Reviewed on 2008-05-22

Without A Paddle is a film about three friends who make a promise to a dead buddy to find a treasure that is located in the backwoods. Along the way, they end up confronting illegal marijuana workers, flirting with sexy hippiechicks and fighting off a otherwise amorous grizzy bear. They also meet a crusty old mountain man(as portrayed by Burt Reynolds)who relauncantly befriends the three adventurers. My favorite parts in the film is when one of the hippiechicks raises her skirt to show her legs completely covered in hair and when the guys must huddle together to keep warm in a rainstorm(that's when a clip of R. Kelly's "Bump and Grind" starts to play). It is kind of ironic that Burt Reynolds would appear in a movie like Without A Paddle, kind of like a Deliverance moment. But all in all, it is a really funny film.

I'm almost sad to say that this is a college favorite of mine. I remember originally seeing this in theatres with my roommates, and subsequently the DVD became a regular weekend event. Yes, it's stupid movie humor as to be expected by this particular set of actors, but gosh darn it I like it! If it makes anyone feel any better, a slice of history is used to explain the trip through the Oregon wilderness--which of course leads to the wilderness survival nightmare that is this movie. Still, it's fun and it has a bit of heart, so that is why I love it so.

Purchased this widescreen edition for a good price. Also found it at one of my local retail stores for $5 after I made the online purchase.
Deliverance Academy Without A Paddle - Reviewed on 2007-11-16

Cross Deliverance with Police Academy and what do you have? An amusing story of three friends that set out to find D.B. Cooper's money after another friend dies. For the most part the movie is a comedy with the same type of drama found in "City Slickers". If you enjoyed that movie you will probably enjoy this one as well. The three find themselves in the back woods of Oregon encountering all types of animals and people. Everything from a Grizzly to gun toting pot farmers and tree hugging women. Nice cameo by Burt Reynolds. Overall not bad and certainly worth at least a rental. Chances are though if you like this type movie you will want to own it. The DVD quality is good but nothing in the way of extras.
