This butcher block island is the only item my husband added to our wedding registry (at Target), and we love it. We had it shipped to our home and it was quite heavy (92 lbs). We did have to return the first shipment as one of the shelves arrived completely split into 2 pieces, but the Target customer service department was very helpful and we received a replacement in just a few days, they even arranged to have the damaged item picked at our house.

It was fairly easy to assemble and came with a large knife block (which I didn't remember seeing in the store) however the butcher block did not have the pre-drilled holes required to attach it. I was secretly pleased because I did not plan on using the knife block (we have a 2 yr old in the house) and now we don't have needless holes showing.

The top shelf is adjustable, which is very convenient, and the drawer glides quite smoothly without feeling wobbly.

Overall, a great item. I would have given it a 5 if it were not for the original damaged delivery and the missing knife block holes.

How many times have you said, "If I just had a little more counter space. . ."? I said it every time I made Belgian waffles. My wife Cathy gave me a Waring Pro Belgian waffle maker for Christmas. The cabinets above every counter prevented the top from opening completely, so I had to put a cutting board across a pair of stove burners and set the waffle maker there. It worked but if I ever needed all 4 burners AND the waffle maker, I was out of luck.

I had seen this work island on my weekly trips to Target and while wrestling the iron to its perch one morning, I decided I had had enough. Target.com was offering the very same item so I ordered it online.

It went together in about an hour though one part, the cam locks, are made of a particularly soft material. If it's not properly aligned with the cam screw, the cam lock will shear off when you tighten it. The maker includes a separate bag of extra hardware, including a single cam lock, but a beefier component would be better.

Aside from that, the work island is the perfect place to both use and show off the waffle maker, while the rest of my waffle-making gear (an unlined copper bowl, a KitchenAid hand mixer and an 8-cup Pyrex batter bowl) are proudly displayed on the shelves below. A rarely used food processor is tucked out of sight at the back of one of the shelves.

If all you need is a few more square feet of counter space, this work island is the perfect alternative to a complete kitchen remodel. Just be careful while you're putting it together.
Nice cart but smaller than stated - Reviewed on 2005-07-01

This is a heavy cart well worth the money. I was, however, disappointed that it is both shorter and shallower than stated. It is only 34" tall with the casters, and 20" deep. Otherwise, I am happy with the overall quality for the money.

This is a terrific buy. I realized it was so heavy in the box because the butcher block is of very good quality, strong, and well-made. As a 66-year-old female who lives alone, I got this baby put together in a snappy 30 minutes. A great addition to my kitchen, and I love the fact that it rolls around (wheels, not shown) can be locked for stability. Very easy to follow assembly instructions.

The Target butcher block island I purchased (3/11/05) was advertised in Amazon for $119.99 and was 26" Wide X 22" Deep with locking castors. With a shipping weight 'stated' at 67 lbs, I did not want to pay the shipping cost, so I took a run over to the local Target store and found the same item on sale. I could hardly budge it off the shelf so I requested assistance. The young man who put it in my car almost had a hernia from the effort. I think this item weighed, not 67 lbs but 67 KILOGRAMS!!! (approximately 147 lbs.) Needless-to-say, at all solid wood (although not certain what kind of wood; it was made in Thailand), it was not one of the cheap pieces one might associate with a less than $120 price tag. My minor complaints are: The knife block was more suitable for large cleavers and had a solid bottom so that portions of the knife blades stuck out the top (In other words, it was eye candy). The bottom of the drawer, although solid wood, was rather flimsy as well (about 1/8" thick). Great instructions for assembling. (I am slow so it took me about 1 1/2 hours.) There were plenty of extra hardware parts included. This item should last (with proper care) into the next century. BRAVO Target!!
