Take the awesome turning capacity of a 16-inch swing and 42 inches between centers, mount a 1-1/2 hp motor on it, and you’ve got a lathe that’s as close to perfection as we’ve seen. It’s as well suited to candlesticks as it is to table legs and bowls, and its features are truly user-friendly. Any speed you like from 0 to 3,200 rpm is at your fingertips, tracked precisely by a digital readout. Convenient cam lock levers let you move the headstock, 14-inch tool rest and tailstock without any tools, something so cool we think other makers should emulate it. We also like the built-in spindle lock for quick and easy chuck and faceplate removal. And here’s something else we found invaluable: You can positive-index the spindle every 10 degrees to make fluting and veining operations a breeze. The whole machine is impressively stable, as its bed and legs are made of cast iron and it weighs it at more than 400 pounds, and we felt no vibration whatsoever, even at the highest speed. The legs are built to accept 2-by-4s in case you want to add a storage shelf, but there’s already a handy tool basket included. It’s a beautiful lathe, a pleasure to use, and we think you can’t go wrong with it whether you’re an experienced turner or contemplating your first pen.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste
