Perfect operation, but deeply flawed for cleaning - Reviewed on 2007-04-27

If you don't have a dishwasher, I don't recommend buying this food processor.
It's fast, quiet, powerful, and truly perfect in every way, so far as its operation is concerned. It makes perfect shredded vegetables, hummus, salsa, purees, ground nuts, etc. The motor is strong, the blades are sharp, and it looks great on the counter.
However, without the sanitizing environment of a dishwasher, you just can't clean the inside of the handle. There is enough space for moisture and tiny bits of food to run into the hollow handle, and no way to remove it for cleaning (I spoke with a Kitchenaid customer service rep, and she confirmed this). Within months of regular use, mold forms inside the handle. This is not exactly the sort of thing I want so close to my food. Also, the inside of the blade is too deep to be reached with a sponge in handwashing, so that gets a little suspect, too. I have tried pouring boiling water and bleach solution into the handle, but it is not clean. Cracking the handle off would break the mechanism that locks the workbowl to the food processor, and replacement bowls run about $35-40 dollars.
Long story short, if you have a dishwasher, you may be fine (unless solid bits get into the handle, which they can and do). If you're not bothered by proximity between fresh food and long-term food rot, then this is the food processor for you.
