Sorry Buddy. Paul McCartney had the money to do a much better job telling your story that this. This was not well put together, written or filmed. This looks like something that a fledgling college student film maker would do. They did not do you honor Buddy.

This is a great documentary on Holly. The clips of Holly are wonderful. The interviews with Jerry Allison and Joe B. Mauldin (my favorite of the Crickets) are wonderful.

Holly was a genius through and through. What he would have accomplished had he lived!!

The only reason I don't give this documentary a five-star rating is because there were two important elements that were left out of this film. 1. Norman Petty and his underhanded ways (which are not addressed probably because at the time this documentary was made he was still alive and would sue if he were portrayed accurately). 2. Maria Elena should have been in this documentary...she married Buddy!! Why was she excluded, or perhaps it was her decision not to participate due to the enmity between her and the Pettys. Vi Petty is given special prominence in this but it is a well-known fact that Vi and Norman hated Maria Elena because she stood up to them and made Buddy realize what they were doing.

This is a wonderful documentary though!

Paul McCartney did a GREAT job with this, I commend him for this effort. Buddy Holly's music was awesome, especially early on when it was raw and pure. Definitely a different sound for the time, and actually lasting to this day. Rock&Roll, Country&Western, the Blues, etc. were all around at the time, but he seemed to meld the Black and the White sound into something new, which apparently lasted. It's a shame that more video footage is not available, for Buddy's sake, but this is a terrific DVD for what is preserved. The interviews with the Crickets, the Everly Brothers, etc. is priceless, something that can never come back if lost. Again, great job!!!

Sir Paul went to Lubbock and Clovis for some scenes in this documentary, and his love for Buddy's music shines through the entire production. Since I live only two hours away from both towns, I have toured the Petty Studios twice in Clovis, and seen the home in which Buddy was married and the church from which he was buried, and his grave, all in Lubbock. I've met two men who performed backup vocals on some of the hits (The Crickets did not sing on the records) and visited the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, a long-overdue tribute to the man who made Lubbock famous, literally, around the world. I was a kid in New Jersey when I bought my first Buddy Holly single, and he was still alive, and one of the first facts I ever learned about him was that he lived in Lubbock and recorded in Clovis. Fifteen years after Buddy's death, to my surprise, I ended up living only about 100 miles from both towns. This DVD is well worth the cost, and it may go out of print, so don't hesitate to add it to your Holly collection. The surviving Crickets and Buddy's family members appear on it, and they are more fascinating than Keith Richards or even Sir Paul.
Just what it says on the tin - Reviewed on 2008-05-17

This DVD does just what it says on the tin. It tells the real story of Buddy Holly's life and music, using interviews with people who knew him well (like the original Crickets) and people influenced by him (like Keith Richards). This is the definitive introduction to the greatest genius of the rock'n'roll era.
