This 1987 thriller was a predictable hit with the teen audience it worked overtime to attract. Like most of director Joel Schumacher's films, it's conspicuously designed to push the right marketing and demographic buttons, and granted, there's some pretty cool stuff going on here and there. Take Kiefer Sutherland, for instance. In Stand by Me he played a memorable bully, but here he goes one step further as a memorable bully vampire who leads a tribe of teenage vampires on their nocturnal spree of bloodsucking havoc. Jason Patric plays the new guy in town, who quickly attracts a lovely girlfriend (Jami Gertz), only to find that she might be recruiting him into the vampire fold. The movie gets sillier as it goes along, and resorts to a routine action-movie showdown, but it's a visual knockout (featuring great cinematography by Michael Chapman) and boasts a cast that's eminently able (pardon the pun) to sink their teeth into the best parts of an uneven screenplay. --Jeff Shannon

As an adult I love this flick. I purchased it for my 8 year old son so we could watch it during the Halloween Holiday. He did not watch it but I think that it would have been ok for him. I know that the movie is rated "R", but I think today it would have been PG-13. There is not sexual imagery, just a little kissing, or vulgarity. There is a little blood and gore but it is very cheesy and the Frog brothers keep the mood light with funny comments.

This DVD Version Is Pretty Lame... - Reviewed on 2008-12-19

I would like to stress that I AM REVIEWING THIS PARTICULAR DVD RELEASE, NOT THE MOVIE. That's why it's getting such a low mark from me. Obviously I like the movie, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. However, I was very disappointed with this DVD's menu options and 'special features'. The menu has no 'play button'. That's right. No 'play movie' option. You can only 'select a scene' (which requires 2 clicks in order to actually start the movie from the beginning). Lame. And, the special features are nothing more than trivia 'readers'. Basically, the lamest kind of special features to have. Needless-to-say, I was very disappointed. It's a shame they didn't make a better product to preserve and honor a modern cult classic.

This is an old school goodie! The Frog brothers, Jami Gertz,it's all good. I was able to have my sons watch the movie the day before Holloween. They loved it.

I could go on about the film's plot and all that other blather but with a film that's 21 years old I figure you already know that stuff. My review is for the Blu-ray disc itself. This one was done right! The transfer is beautiful! I saw things watching this version that I have never before noticed, like how the recently staked Marco's dried blood on the Frog brothers resembles sparkly fairy dust in the sunlight as they escape the cave; a nice nod to Peter Pan there. Good disc, worth adding to your Blu-ray collection.
