2 years of great use - Reviewed on 2009-01-01

I have used the hairsetter 3 to 5 times a week for the past 2 years. I originally purchased it for travel but liked it so much that I put in my bath at home for regular use. It is compact and fits easily in a bathroom drawer. The cord stores inside the base for travel. The clips store inside the unit. It heats quickly but the ends stay cool enough to touch. I have shoulder length fine hair and have a difficult time keeping body and curl in my hair. This setter does a very good job of giving me curl and body. (I need to mention that previously I used a Caruso steam setter and that appliance gave a longer lasting style, but it's curlers began to fall apart, and I was tiring of keeping the mineral deposits cleaned out of it.) The only complaint I have is that it is starting to fail after 2 years of use. This morning it started making funny popping noises and I'm concerned about using it again. I live in an area that has softer water, so I'm going back to the Caruso, but I may purchase another Conair as a backup.

I got this set to take on a week-long trip, and with airlines charging for extra baggage, etc. I wanted to pack as compactly as possible. I was amazed at how compact this unit is, absolutely no excess space! It tucks very nicely into a corner of the suitcase. I also like the 'fabric' zipper case...I have had 2 previous hard-cased travel curler sets whose covers got crack from being packed tightly in my suitcase. Although the cord comes wrapped up outside the case, I've found it can be easily coiled around the top of all the curlers, tucking the plug down inside, and the zipper can be zipped virtually all the way around the case. I was initially concerned about ordering curlers as small as these, as I had shoulder length hair, and I didn't want tight, tiny curls. But I found that by experimenting with the length of time heating, and amount of time the curlers were left in the hair, the curls turned out great, and also held their curl much better than my regular electric curlers would do. So, I use these most of the time at home now, not just for traveling. The special 'gripper teeth' on the curlers really do help hold the hair as you roll the curler, making these stay the most securely of any of the curler sets I've owned. I'm very pleased I bought them!

They heat up quickly, are compact and manage to curl my thick medium length hair. I have bigger sets of hot rollers but I always go back to these.
would be better without the starting strip - Reviewed on 2008-09-01

These are a great product, and it's difficult to find this style of roller in the market (and I've been shopping awhile), and it's great to have 8 of the "right size" roller in a travel-size pack, and if one reads the directions (wink) then it really is better to follow the directions and leave the lid on while the rollers heat up so that they'll heat up quicker. Downside is the starting strip on the roller - it's unnecessary (at least for me with thick and slightly coarse hair), and it pulls my hair worse than a fine-tooth comb (ouch!), and makes it difficult to insert the roller clip onto the roller. But for someone else with thin hair or super-fine hair that slides off the roller, then the starting strip is a great idea. But for me, I wish I could find this same roller kit but without the starting strip.....

I have fine, long-ish hair and these curlers worked really well for me. They warmed up very fast (I'd say 2-5 minutes), and gave my hair a nice curl, (though a little bumpy in places). But the size is amazing; it's tiny! It took up no space in my suitcase unlike the other travel models out there. Plus there are 12 curlers in the pack--also very unlike other models. For those two reasons I highly recommend them.
