Power, power and more power! The 18-volt 1/2-inch hammer drill/driver's high-torque motor churns out an impressive 500 inch-pounds of torque—imagine the jobs it could tackle. We were surprised by how good it feels in hand, thanks, we think, to its neatly balanced design that places the handle toward the center of the tool. A nice touch is the ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws for a superb hold on your bit. And the all-metal, three-speed transmission is so innovative that DeWalt patented it. All we know is that this is one powerhouse of a hammer drill/driver, no matter what mode it's in. The DC385 recip saw's keyless blade clamp wins points in our book for fast blade changes. And talk about fast—with its one-inch stroke length, it runs at 2,900 strokes per minute. Like the drill, it's well balanced and feels good in hand. It's compact, lightweight and offers great cutline visibility through the pivoting shoe's open top. Plus, we like that the blade will reverse for flush and plunge cutting. The circular saw slices into 2x4s like butter, and you can always see your cut because the blade's on the left. Bevel cuts are no sweat; the saw's easy to adjust and the scale's clear. The grinder's hardworking with a nice three-position side handle. Kudos to DeWalt for the metal gear case and the longer life it'll give this grinder. We're not as impressed with the impact gun, despite its 0 to 3,000 impacts per minute and how smoothly it runs without any kickback—-it's just that we'd like to see it take more than ¼-inch hex shanks. Finally, the flashlight's neck is super flexible, shedding light in just about any direction for up to three hours. This is a great collection of tools, essential for the contractor and perfect for the skilled do-it-yourselfer.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

I only buy recon Dewalt. 50% off MSP is still too high. I like Dewalt BUT Dewalt is only Black & Decker's premium tool. It doesn't compare with Milwaukee or some of the other brands. It's a mid class power tool.

I don't claim to use these tools on an everyday occasion, but the times I have used them over the the 2 years of ownership they have performed very well. I have put the saws and the drills through the test when I redid a deck and dock at a lake house and was very impressed with the amount of time the batteries held up. My brother who started the 4 day job stating "a cordless circular is just not going to get the job done with all the cuts we have to make" and then by day 3 was not taking the corded circular out of the truck since we didn't use it on day 2. I have probably ran the drill for well over 200 hours doing fencing and decking or at least someone has had it in their hands and have not seen any problems with any of the batteries. I did buy the double charger that included an extra battery so that I would have 3 batteries and a dual-charging station. I did break the clamshell of the recip saw, but my office is in the same business park as the Dewalt repair faciilty, so $13 later it was back to new. I have seen better tools, but for the price that I paid from Amazon (thanks to have a price matching error on their website - $320 after rebate and discount for opening an Amazon.com visa) I can't beat these tools (especially, since I ended up getting an additional tool for free via the Dewalt promotion). The one tool that seems to eat a battery up the quickest is the grinder, while fixing a few welds on the dock the grinder was used to clean the metal and it could eat of a battery after about 30 minutes of use. Now, if I could just get the circular back from my brother!

First and foremost, be careful when you buy one of these kits because they all look vaguely the same and it can be confusing. Case in point, I had been viewing the kit on-line that included the right angle driver -- which is a tool that I really desired. After scrolling through the several 'e-stores' offerings via the Amazon Website (thinking that I was looking at the exact same kit and model), I finally found a kit that was priced lower than the others and fit my budget. Somewhere along the way I transposed model codes and didn't pay attention because when the tools arrived, I had gotten the kit with the impact driver instead of the angle driver. I don't need a weency 'ittle torque driver like this one as it is pretty much useless -- you need a much larger one for vehicle lug nuts, for instance. Believe me, I tried. My mistake. Oh well. I opted not to send it all back as I needed to start using the reciprical saw immediately and didn't want the hassle.

My only real complaint thus far with the kit is in the way that it was shipped. Basically, the factory (or the store) just dumped all the tools into the bag, threw the bag into a box and shipped it off. There was no padding, no rigid styrofoam matrix for protection, nothing. And I made the further amateur mistake of opening the bag in an upright vertical position and out fell all the tools onto my hard tile floor -- ouch! Luckily, the tools are sturdy and made for being dropped and there was nary a scratch or dent, thank goodness. But what a stupid way to send out their gear! They are just looking for returns if they don't invest a little bit of time and effort in proper packing.

The tools themselves (other than the wrench) are so far very good. The recipricating saw seems slightly under powered or maybe I am expecting too much out of a battery powered tool. But it really took some effort on my part to apply quite a bit of pressure to simply saw up my used Christmas tree. I kind of expected it to cut like butter, but no. I have not used any other cordless recipricating saws, so I have no basis of comparison and I may be way off base in my slightly negative review. In any case, it did the job and did it well with a tiny bit of human elbow grease. I like it, but it is not as violently severe a cutter as I had hoped.

The circular saw, the cut-off tool and the hammer drill are stupendous. The drill itself is the most amazing tool of its kind I have ever used. Previously, I have been a Makita man and have been through countless twelve-volt drills. This DeWalt changed my mind. What a joy! Who knew that drilling could become such a pleasure. It's hard to explain. But you will know what I mean when you try it. It's like being completely happy with your Mazda for many years and having no complaints. But then someone lets you drive their Porche for a day... Yeah. It's happy good.

I found the batteries to be more than sufficient for my needs. Two batteries shipped with the kit, so I always have one charging and the other working. I have been very satisfied with the length of time I am able to use each tool on a single charge and I am also pleased with the torque that this battery source allows (except with the impact driver, of course).

Would I recommend this kit after a month and a half of use? Absolutely! Consider me satisfied with my purchase. Just pay attention to what you are getting in the particular kit that you choose.

If you have to work with these tools at work you are going to get mad. Not enough guts, power and battery life. I find that Hilti is what works best in the trades.
These tools are nice to have at home for your wife and kids to play with.
I have smelt the burnt coils of many of these XRP tools. Go Hilti if you don't want to mess around.
These tools are nothing but black and decker tools with yellow plastic on them.
The flashlight is worthless too.

Odd how that 1 guy kept getting bad batteries with corrosion problems? Mine has been flawless for almost 2 years. I love the versatility and no-nonsense torque and power of the tools. I bought this set to replace an old Makita which still runs.

I bought it after a contractor came to my house using the same kit. I tried it out and loved it. I ordered the set the next day and haven't regretted it. I've cut pipes and 2x4's, built a deck and interior framing. It's a great set of tools.
