Frankly, you can’t go wrong with any of the random orbit sanders made by respected toolcrafters these days; it’s really a matter of brand preference, your budget and what fits your hand most comfortably. This one’s among the least expensive from the big toolmakers, but its features are pretty well matched to its competitors. Its motor is a tad more powerful at 2.4 amps than the crowd, but there’s no discernable difference in use. And like the others, it’s loaded with great features, most notably Porter-Cable’s Sandtrap dust filtration system, which actually collected most of the dust we generated. It’s a hard canister, not a fabric bag, swivels 360 degrees around the tool body for maneuvering in tight spots and can be connected to a shop vacuum with an accessory hose. And like most of the others, this sander uses five-hole hook-and-loop abrasives—-they can be pricey, but you can’t beat the convenience. At 80 grit, you’re removing stock at a surprising rate; with 220, you’re getting a truly swirl-free finish. For safety’s sake, the pad won’t rotate at full speed until it contacts the work surface, and as soon as it’s lifted off, the pad brake immediately slows the rotation to 400 rpm. Since this is a palm-grip design, you can switch your grip between a top hold or grasping the main housing. This model doesn’t have a rubber grip on top like some of its competitors, and you do feel a little more vibration as a result. It’s a hardworking, versatile sander and definitely a good buy.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

I found this to be a great sander, especially for the price. It is the quietest sander I have owned, has lots of torque. and can handle jobs where you have to be aggressive. I would definitely buy it again. It is hard to beat Porter-Cable especially when they don't rip you off for replacement parts like many of the others.

This is the third sander of this type I have purchased. It is comfortable and does a good job. When comes to tools like sanders, routers, etc. I only buy Porter-Cable. I am a remodeling contracter and I build furniture, so I work my tools pretty hard.

I have used my 3 333's for over 8 years. I have never had a major problem with them and have found that they are the most used sanders in my shop.

The top palm grip is comfortable, which is important to me as I have smaller sized hands than my fellow woodworkers. The variable speed adjustment knob is located in an out of the way place, ensuring that you don't accidentally increase the speed while working on your project.

The hook and loop setup is very nice. I have yet to have any problems with any of the hook and loop sandpaper I have used on the two that I own. None of the paper has ever slid off.

I have had a slight problem with one of the dust collectors. On one of my machines, the collector keeps popping off unless it is secured with masking tape. Aside from that, the unit collects and pushes dust away properly. I would still suggest using a mask, however.

This is the second Porter Cable model 333K sander we purchased. The first one was damaged when it got too close to plastic sheeting and sucked it in. I did buy replacement parts, but they didn't hold up as well as the original. Thus the four stars. It is a very good sander and would have received five stars if not for the ease at which it could be damaged by something that is not uncommon to a sanding area. Depending on the paper you use it can really hog out the wood or do excellent fine work.
