Above average piece of 80's horror - Reviewed on 2008-12-30

I put off seeing The Funhouse for the longest time because I thought it would just be another run of the mill 80's slasher with a carnival theme. I was wrong. The Funhouse actually turned out to be a very fun movie for me. This is the kind of horror flick that would appeal to the viewer that looks for things such as creepy set pieces and props, eerie scenery, and unsettling atmosphere. If you're in it for the gore and storyline you might walk away from this one unsatisfied. But that's why I enjoy horror so much. In my opinion there's various factors that can make a horror film great, and while one movie rarely succeeds at all of these factors, there's many that really nail certain ones, and this is one of them.

In short, two young couples head off to the carnival and decide that it would be fun to stay the night inside the funhouse after the carnival has closed. After they unintentionally witness a murder looking through the floor boards of the funhouse, they decide that the fun is over and attempt to make an escape. However the greedy actions of one of the boys leaves them all locked inside the elaborate funhouse with a blood-thirsty freak of nature out to get them.

The hostility displayed by the carnival folk is another aspect that really aids in adding a lot of tension to the movie as they are portrayed here as dirty, mean spirited, and lacking in morals. They refer to themselves as their own kind, and bitterly look upon the "locals" as outsiders that have no human value beyond how much money they have to spend at the carnival. Once again it is worth mentioning the awesomely creepy carnival props including dummies, clowns, and mannequins adorned in lights of all colors. (Not to mention there is something disurbing about waching that lanky freak staggering around in that Frankenstein mask!) The movie uses all this together to make a simple carnival seem like a strange and frightening new world.

Overall it isn't Tobe Hooper's shining moment, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and at any rate, it's a solid piece of good old 80's horror, which I'm always up for. Check this one out.

WHO DOESN'T LOVE THE FUNHOUSE WHEN THEY VISIT THE AMUSEMENT PARK? THIS MOVIE IS GREAT TO HAVE IN ONE'S COLLECTION. THAT IS IF YOUR A MOVIE BUFF LIKE MYSELF. THE IDEA OF SPENDING THE NIGHT IN A FUN HOUSE WITH FRIENDS SEEMS COOL, BUT NOT COOL, FOR WHAT ONE OF THEM DID,TO BRING THE FUNHOUSE TO REAL LIFE...
Funhouse-Good Times version - Reviewed on 2008-09-11

This review is for Funhouse on Good Time's dvd and not by what appears to be a studio version of the film. Good Times is a company that releases cheap dvds and sometimes the picture is not always the best. Halloween 2 for example on Good Times dvd was bad. This is why I want to make sure people know the difference. I bought the studio version and the seller sent me the good time version and I said "Oh crap", yet the film is fine and the picture is good.

The Funhouse has an excellent atmosphere. The opening credits are creepy and im not even afraid of carnivals. The film follows a good plot and I enjoyed it overall. Not alot of gore but the carnival is creepy enough, isnt it? I'm surprised they did not make a sequel to this film.

The Funhouse is a really good 80's slasher. Four teens decide to spend the night in the funhouse, then something bad happens, they try to leave, but they are locked in with a deformed man in a Frankenstein mask. Will they survive? I just love how the movie looks with spooky clowns and carnival gags. If you love horror, slashers, and monsters, you'll love THE FUNHOUSE!!!
Pretty decent - Reviewed on 2008-03-11

The funhouse is a fairly decent 80's horror movie. It's very different, because it's not a typical slasher flick. It's about a group of kids who go to a local carnival, filled with weird carnies. The boss of the carnival has a strange secret that has to do with his "Son". When the group decides that they want to sleep in the fun house, the secrets are revealed. The kids are doomed, within the fun house, as there are traps around every corner...
