Disappointing -- but that's not surprising -- - Reviewed on 2008-11-29
It astonishes that so many believe the "supergroup" hype about these guys. They made two studieo LPs, those having the advantage of studio overdubbing and the usual tricks. They made a double-live LP. They played very little together, actually, because it's rare a stage is large enough to accommodate more than one of their egos at a time.
Two studio LPS and a double-live in 30-40 years, and they've been sitting on that. And this shows the weaknesses -- the holes in their harmonies, etc. -- of their live performances.
The same mega-hype applies to "Buffalo Springfield". They made -- what? -- two LPs, and the xecond was mostly tracts left over from the first. And yet one would thing they'd produced a brilliant LP per year for 40 years. I recall "seeing" "Buffalo Springfiled" in 1967: they came out on stage, spent some 10 minutes tuning up, then left the stage. That was the entire concert.
It can only be that they wre from CA, and CA hypes their groups to Heaven, regardless whetehr they deserve it.
There are few worthwhile spots in this. But Steven Stills' "musicianship"!? Try to recognize his awful solo performance of "What's That Sound?" -- Gawd-awful in all particulars.
A lovable Gooney Bird, a helping of southern fried soul and an archangel with no shoes carry on very well - Reviewed on 2008-09-16
This DVD shows how Crosby, Stills and Nash began to mellow with age, live and let live. The trio's relaxed mood - particularly in contrast to how stressed out they appeared in 'Daylight Again' - is a joy to behold. Mr. Crosby, grateful to be alive, is funny and in excellent musical form. Do not miss '1000 Roads'; it's delightful to see. He also harmonizes as sweetly as can be with his great friend, Mr. Nash -- I'll take him over anyone who was said to fill in for him in the 'bad old days', particularly in the gorgeous 'Wind on the Water'.
What can I say about Graham Nash here? High on making music, his ebullience in check, his English charm to the fore, he shines as brightly as ever. Is it any wonder that the catchiest tunes in the CSN catalog are his? Many of them are here, too. Even a private joke does not spoil a radiant 'Just a Song Before I Go', and 'Marrakesh Express' is delightful. (This should be a singalong!)
While Stephen Stills does not blend in as well vocally, his guitar playing during this concert seems more empathetic to the entire flow of this performance than one might expect, surprisingly so during 'Crosby/Nash' numbers in which he thus adds a new dimension. He does get considerable chance to show off his forte - and that very well indeed.
Kinda restores your faith in CSN... *S*
