You'd have thought that Nora Ephron and Mike Nichols had remade Heaven's Gate: that was the critical reaction to this film version of Ephron's semiautobiographical novel about her own marital woes. The fact that they had Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep playing thinly disguised versions of Carl Bernstein and Ephron probably made them bigger, fatter targets. In fact, the film was a genuinely funny and painful look at the effects of marital infidelity and divorce, in the story of two married writers and what happens when the pregnant wife finds out the husband has been fooling around behind her back. The film is more dramatic and less quip-filled than Ephron's novel, which made the Ephron character a food writer and was peppered with recipes. Nicholson stepped into his role at the last minute, when Nichols fired Mandy Patinkin for being too intense and not funny enough. --Marshall Fine

Heart Burn
Streep and Nicolson did a great job teaming up for this movie. Loved the romance and heartache that so many people experience these days in this story. Very entertaining and is a tear jerker.

Was Nora Ephron Indulging in Screen Writing as Therapy? - Reviewed on 2008-05-01

Nora Ephron wrote the screenplay of this modestly entertaining movie. Was this the best that she could do? No, I suspect that this project deteriorated into a therapeutic exercise. Ephron preferred to get in touch with her feelings. Writing it to please an audience subconsciously became a secondary goal. Heartburn should be seen only by those interested in the somewhat autobiographical retelling of the failed marriage between Ephron and Carl Bernstein. Everybody else should ignore this movie. Berstein comes across as an untrustworthy cad and Ephron a gullible victim. The acting talents of Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep save Heartburn. Your life will not end if you never view this film---but it might be worth a few hours of your time. Flip a coin. That may be the best way to make the decision.

I bought this movie even though I'd seen it so many times. I only buy the ones I truly love. I believe this is based on a true story. Meryl streep is superb as always and Jack Nicholson is equally good. The soundtrack is also good with songs by Carly Simon. It's a definite must see. It did not get the recognition it so deserved.
