It took 10 years and more tummy-tuck coverage than the average fan might have wanted, but Wilson Phillips is back, its taut three-part harmonies intact. Concept album California couldn't have been a difficult record to make--the daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson (Carnie and Wendy) and the Mamas and the Papas' John and Michelle Phillips (Chynna) grew up on these canyon-deep, left coast-leaning hits. Surprisingly, though, it's not their parents' songs--"Monday Monday" and "In My Room" among them--that Wilson Phillips make soar. Instead, they stomp off with the Eagles' "Already Gone" (covered twice here, once as a hidden track) and opener "You're No Good," the Linda Ronstadt classic, skewing the songs in their favor, making what was once rich and earthy seem pop-sweet. The sun-drenched perkiness pervading these tracks may be standard Wilson Phillips, but credit legendary producer Peter Asher with maintaining a sandcastle-smooth sound throughout. --Tammy La Gorce

are back! And they chose really good material for their comeback. Terrific, too bad the album didn't get promoted basically, I think its one of their finest.

This cd is so good. So short, but so good. Should have done a lot better than it did. WP's version of "Go Your Own Way" is worth the purchase, alone.

I do not yet own this CD although I was quite excited when I first heard that Wilson Phillips was reuniting. I think my reason for not buying it was because it was a cover album. I don't have anything against artists' covering a song from the past but I think this was around the same time that group (I forget what they were called) re-did one of Roxette's songs and totally ruined it. But listening to the samples, this sounds half decent. Not that you can really rely on a sample but I think I might spend the money and get this album.

Rather than updateing their sound they unfortunatly chose to go back in time Please dont get me wrong, there is NO bigger Wilson Phpllips fan then I but I cant begin to tell you how disapointed I was to find out that this was going to be just another cover album. apearently so was everyone else (the album flopped) It kills me to say this, butI think their 2000 GREATEST HITS cd was truely their greatest hits and none of these songs are worthy enough to wear the title. Im sure that your diehard W P fan would agree. The only reason that Igave this album 3 stars at all is that I was still somewhat impressed with their GRAMMY winning talent to combine their three voices into one amazing harmony. They truely are gifted in this sense.

Between this album, the '90 self-titled debut and '92's SHADOWS & LIGHT,I like this one the best. It's full of great covers like YOU'RE NO GOOD,made famous by Linda Ronstadt and subsequently,Van Halen. GO YOUR OWN WAY by Lindsey Buckingham and made famous by his band Fleetwood Mac, is great also. ALREADY GONE was a hit for the Eagles in '74. The daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson(Carnie and Wendy) and The Mamas and Papas' John and Michelle Phillips(Chynna, pronounced "chi-nuh") respectively, awesomely cover their parents' hit songs IN MY ROOM,DANCE DANCE DANCE and MONDAY MONDAY. The other songs are great. I dedicate this album to the memories of Carnie's and Wendy's uncles Dennis and Carl Wilson(Brian's brothers and fellow Beach Boys) and John Phillips. They'd be beyond thrilled to hear the covers of their hit songs.
