Many flaws helped this band go extinct... - Reviewed on 2008-02-12

I am a huge fan of `Through the Eyes' which was a very promising debut album by Flaw, but their sophomore album `Endangered Species' didn't build on that promise, at least not to the extend I would have liked. The single off the album `Recognize' should give a hint to the fact that this album is going to be considerable softer than their debut. `Through the Eyes' wasn't an extremely heavy hitting album for even though it was harsher and rougher than this album it still had plenty moments of sentimentality and beautiful melody, but here Flaw ditches melody and sentimentality for simplicity and the album comes off amateurish in parts.

`Recognize' is utterly flawless though, I will attest to that. It's a very touching track that emphasizes Chris' brilliant vocal abilities. His voice is golden, able to reach intense growls as well as flawless vocal escalades and beautifully melodic lines. `Recognize' puts this at the forefront; such a beautiful song. Sadly this is the only flawless track here. `Medicate' starts off the album with their new redefinition of `heavy' and comes off as weak. It sounds like something an eight-year-old could have come up with. `Endangered Species' works much better for it's able to meld together the heavy aspects of Flaw with the melodic. Chris' voice sounds impeccable. It's not a `great' song but it's one of the best on this album. I actually really like `Wait for Me' even if it isn't that complicated a track. It's a sweet song that touches me and Chris sounds great up against an acoustic guitar; the way he breaks down "time" alone is phenomenal.

`You've Changed' is probably aside from `Medicate' the heaviest song here. It's a better track than `Medicate' but it's not that impressive. I still must admit that Chris sounds flawless; seriously, the guy's voice is magic. `Turn the Tables' opens with promise; I love the verses, but the chorus is so standard for this album. I think that's my biggest pet-peeve with this album; most of the tracks break down the same way. Once you've heard one song then you've heard them all. The chorus for `Turn the Tables' is similar to the chorus for `All the Worst' which is similar to `Decide'. `All the Worst' is will say though is a decent track which draws heavy off of Phil Collins type influences (I know, `Phil Collins'?) and it works really well.

`World's Divide' is just too forgettable for me. Again, Chris sounds impeccable on `Many Faces' but really if that's the best you can say about a track is it really worth listening to? I do love the way this song breaks down at the end so I guess I can say that this is one to listen to. `Final Cry' tries to hard. That in itself is a failure. The chorus is horrendous. The way Chris says "damage" gets under my skin in a bad way.

The album closes with `Not Enough' which ironically is my feelings about this album as a whole. It's just not enough. It could have and should have been so much more. `Not Enough' is one of the better songs here though, which is nice to see since their closing song off `Through the Eyes', `One More Time', is quite frankly their finest track ever so I really wanted them to close this on a good note and they did. Chris sounds amazing as usual. It's just too bad that the album as a whole doesn't stack up.

So in the end six (`Endangered Species', `Recognize', `Wait for Me', `Many Faces', `All the Worst' & `Not Enough') out of twelve tracks (that's just half a completed album) are worthy of Flaw's name. They would have been better off putting out an EP until they could work up better material. Now they are no more and Chris has brought his vocal talents to another band (Five.Bolt.Main) so this is the last album we'll ever receive from this band. What a sad, sad thing indeed.

I found this CD on here as a recommended item. I wish I would of found it sooner.
Very emotional music that is beautifully constructed. voice and the guitars and various other mix's are perfect. This is some music you can truly get into. Be careful if you are sad or emotional at the time of listening, tears are very possible.

I cant wait for the next album!!!!
Very powerful!

Behind the scenes drama doesn't hurt the album - Reviewed on 2007-10-21

The drama and changes behind the scenes didn't hurt this album. Chris Volz does an amazing job on this album and it deserves a lot more respect than it gets. This album did not get much radio play and that's a true shame since this record label rushed them and then dropped them. The drumming on this album is not done by the same drummer as TTE, but the temp drummer held his own on this album. Some have said this album is softer than TTE, but I don't think it's a bad thing. I've heard the pre-production version and although harder, it wasn't better than this IMO. This is a great album!

I recently purchased their last CD "Through Eyes" and loved. I then searched for this Cd and found it as entertaining as their first album. They should have never broken up.

chris has one of the most beautiful voices and he switches through the songs to his screaming vocals really well. He's very talented. i like endangered species a lot and his other album through the eyes is equally awesome. i hope chris releases more flaw albums. He's busy with five bolt main, but i heard flaw will continue as a band with a new album coming out soon. :)
