Editorial Reviews and Product Descriptions
Album Description
Donavon is mates with Jack Johnson and a professional surfer. He is one of the most charismatic and soulful surfers in the world today yet his focus has shifted significantly to his music. This self-titled album is the acoustic compliment to the laid-back world that Donovan comes from.
Customer Reviews
Easy On the Ears - Reviewed on 2008-08-29
Me reviewing music is an abomination unto God and man; however, I just had to put in my say about this album. I first became aware of Donavon F. through the OC Post (now defunct, great now how am I going to get my news?). So after reading Jimmy Buffett's A Salty Piece of Land (you can read my review of that book if you go to see all my reviews), I decided to go for broke on the remaining available credit on my cards. Not only did I buy a couple of Buffett CDs [that (to your great relief) shall pass unreviewed by me], I splurged on this CD. Curiosity, you know. Now according to some unnamed passengers in my car who were listening to this CD as I was, his songs were repetitive, and he sang the same words and phrases over and over again, and his music was repetitive. What do those passengers know? (No, not you, Honey. I was talking about someone else.) I loved this album, because I'm Free. The songs are the perfect background music to relaxing, working on your tan, doing the dishes, doing something else, you know - background music. If this music were a female beauty contestant, it (she) would win Miss Congeniality. I will put Donavon's new album, "Pass It Around" on my Amazon wish list.
P.S. Since I'm a music moron, I don't know anything about Jack Johnson except that he helped out with the phenomenally great Free song.
Very light and mellow - Reviewed on 2007-12-28
I was told of Donavon through a friend of mine who, like me, was a fan of Jack Johnson's. It is well known that both Johnson and Frankenreiter are buddies, and as a result, their music sounds relatively similar.
This disc, top to bottom, exudes a laid-back vibe, with soft, but catchy beats to complement Frankenreiter's smooth voice. When I listen to this album, images of a late Spring Saturday morning flood my mind. There seems to be an underlying feeling of just wanting to hang out and soak in whatever atmosphere the listener is in.
The reason I gave it 4 stars is because of a relative lack of variety. He slows it down and picks it up, but unlike Jack Johnson, he doesn't vary his fast beats. This, however, is a very trivial matter and anyone who reads this review should get this album. It's a very easy listen and will definitely draw the listener in.
