Description

Extend The Chronicles of Riddick experience with this all-new, visionary animated film that bridges the incredible stories of Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick . Starring Vin Diesel as the voice and likeness of Riddick and created by Peter Chung (The Animatrix, MTV's "Aeon Flux"), one of the world's most revered animators, The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury delivers thrilling sci-fi adventure that takes Riddick, Jack and Imam on a death-defying confrontation with an intergalactic bounty hunter.

Taking a page from The Animatrix, Dark Fury is part of a new trend of bridging theatrical sequels. As an official product of a franchise, the 35-minute anime benefits from having the original actors voice the characters, including Vin Diesel as Riddick. This story opens with the new action hero and the two other survivors of Pitch Black already caught by a giant spaceship filled with dread. The sinewy leader has a unique--and creepy--jail for master villains and she has her sights set on Riddick. The film--indeed the series--is indebted to animator Peter Chung, who brings his techno style from his Aeon Flux series. His smooth animation for Riddick doesn't reinvent the character as much as give him a new, appealing fluidity. As anime goes, there's nothing really new here--plenty of action, cool killers, and dramatic spurts of blood--but it's a building block for how this genre might enliven movie series and sequels in the future. --Doug Thomas

Animated Short Riddick Movie - Reviewed on 2008-07-15

Got the three Riddick movies as a gift and watched all three over the weekend. I can't believe I liked them so well. In this cartoon segment of the Riddick saga, Riddick, Jack, and Imam end up on a ship conveniently owned by a collector of master criminals (a female) who is anxious to add Riddick to her collection. (She freezes her victims but they are still alive.) I remember this storyline from a Star Trek when a collector tried to collect Data. This reused storyline still worked well for this, particularly because this was so short. I think it would have been a mistake to make this longer. It was just the right length to hold my interest. The animation is interesting in this, very stylized and unique.

Too bad this wasn't feature length. Vin Diesel is one of the best voice actors out there (See the Iron Giant). The animation is beautifully crafted, with the smallest attention to detail, an an arguably visionary approach. This short film shows how far the Riddick universe could go in the animated format. I hope they continue this series either in live action or animated format in the future.

This short animated feature was created to help fill in the gap between Riddick movies and at the same time, cash in on the hype of the new movie in 2004. Being a huge fan of Pitch Black I wasted no time buying this DVD then. Riddick, Imon and Jack are present and all voiced by their real actors. Also present is Toombs who plays a bigger role in the 3rd installment. Even though the movie is short, I consider it essential if you liked Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick.

For me and any Riddick fan, I'd have to say this was a great chapter in the Chronicles of Riddick. I think this and Animatrix will inspire many to pursue making these kind of films in order to solve the problem of unanswered questions from the live action movies. As for the film itself, it's short but sweet. The advantage of this is that there is no time wasted on anything that does not add to the story itself. It will keep you interested and entertained all the way through. Another great thing is that the actors from the live action movies including Vin Diesel showed their support by doing the voices of their characters. This is worth your pick for your Riddick collection is not complete without this.

I really didn't expect much going in, not being a huge fan of anime. But since I really liked both movies, I figured I'd give this one a shot, and it fits into the story line very well.
