AVOID! - Reviewed on 2007-12-18

This has to be the worst bit of theatrical trash I've ever encountered. Please don't buy it but search your local libraries to listen to it first. There's nothing funny about it since you won't be able to get over the horrible lyric and aweful score. I bought it and paid too much for quick shipping to give it immediately to my local library so that others can avoid my mistake. There's much better out there. Coming from someone who knows musicals, produces and directs them, it's not worth the time. Little theatres out there...aviod this one!

I've seen "The Musical of Musicals" twice (third time will be this weekend.) I've played the CD several times. The CD has all the songs and dialogue -- it's missing only the visual action. The cast on the CD is wonderful and the show, simply brilliant.
The plot is necessarily trite but the script is witty and does a suberb job parodying the musical styles of five Broadway writers/composers: Rodgers and Hammerstein, Steven Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Kander and Ebb, with a bit of Marvin Hamlisch thrown in at the end.
People who are very familiar with musical theater will have a thousand laughs. Those less familiar, a couple hundred.

I recently saw a local professional production of this show and was laughing so hard that I felt I needed to purchase the cast recording in order to catch the parts I missed while doubled over. I f you love the American musical then you will enjoy this show. The Sondheim and Kander & Ebb segments I found the most dead-on and entertaining.

I'm not sure if it is necessary to know ever musical there is by heart to enjoy this, but it probably helps a little.

This show consist of one very basic plot line consisting of a young ingenue owing rent to the villain, whereupon the hero offers a solution. It is retold five times, each in the style of some of the most prominent creative teams of musical theatre.

A large part of the fun is allusions to the music, lyrics and overall style of said creative teams. Yet it is also possible to enjoy the show as pure parody of styles most people are at least a little familiar with.

Buy this regardless of which musical style you prefer, or which composer you are familiar with. You're guaranteed a heckuvalot of fun.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable show if you get it. The musical references throughout the show are a great joy to discover. If you know this stuff it is fun deciphering the passages as you go! Not sure how the average show goer would feel about it. But I highly recommend it.
