Singer/pianist Diana Krall breaks new ground interpreting modern standards by Tom Waits, Mose Allison, and Joni Mitchell, as well as compositions by herself and new husband, Elvis Costello. Krall's piano-jazz cred comes through loudly and clearly on her Count Basie-styled version of the Bonnie Raitt staple "Love Me Like a Man" (written by folk-bluesman Chris Smither). But it's the collaborations with her spouse that unearth untapped emotional nuances of her velvet voice; many are reminiscent of Bill Evans's moody, impressionistic pieces. The title track, "Narrow Daylight," "Abandoned Masquerade," and "I’m Coming Through" all deal with love and loss. "Departure Bay," a picturesque ode to her hometown of Nanaimo, B.C., proves that this is the start of something big, and that two heads--and hearts--are better than one. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Great smoky voice with really tight jazz backing combo - Reviewed on 2008-07-20

Tremendous disc. Diana's voice is great, the mike is close with a fantastic breathy texture to her voice. Fantastic backing group with a swing/bluesy feel - rhythmic. I think her 'Temptation' is the best version I've ever heard of this track. More please!

Bluesy, not jazz - Reviewed on 2008-07-10

I'm a jazz fan, and a big fan of Diana. I put off buying this CD for some time because none of the songs were familiar to me. Finally, I broke down and bought it. The songs are all in a blues vein, and not jazzy. If that suits your taste, then you'll like this CD. It's well done, but too downbeat for me.

I'm a big fan of Diana Krall and was very surprised at the quality of her voice on this cd. Sorry, but I like jazz that makes me wanna stomp my feet and snap my fingers and make me get up and dance, not put me to sleep. The lyrics are so drawn out and her voice sounds strained. I wish she would do a tribute to Frank Sinatra, the capitol years. I would love to hear her rendition of Witchcraft.

A great step in the right direction for her. She has such a wonderful jazz talent, but has spent so much time covering standards. We all love her for that, but she has needed to start stepping away from the formulaic and just start being herself. I hope she begins to explore just playing the piano, I'd love to hear more of that from her. This is a fine listen and is highly recommended.
