The Flaming Lips have been around for many years in the background of popular music, always influential, always great, never that popular.

This is one of their greatest music offerings, giving us this beautiful and fun story of Yoshimi and a mixture of folk, indie pop, an d experimental music all intertwined into quite possibly one of the best albums of the last ten years.

Get it, put it on, and relax. Listen, most importantly, listen. That is one of the strongest points of this band that goes unnoticed a lot: The sounds that they produce musically that most people just glance over.

Best album of 2002 made even better - Reviewed on 2008-04-09

I have been actively buying music since 1970 and Yoshimi is my favorite album from 2002 and in my all time top ten. The Flaming Lips created a sonic masterpiece and the 5.1 release makes it even richer when played through my home theater system. The section where Wayne Coyne describes what they were seeking to do with the enhanced mix is really cool and the video behind he scenes material is interesting. I passed along my original copy of the CD only to someone else hoping to convert more people to the best band from the US that sadly many people still do not know.

my favorite flaming lips album - Reviewed on 2007-05-22

i am a huge fan of the flaming lips, and i must say that this is my favorite album. i think this is probably the only flaming lips album that is completely perfect. every song on this album is just absolutely amazing. and the dvd disc is awesome, some really good songs on it that you couldnt hear elsewhere. deffinately buy this. id say even if you have this album already, you should still buy this special edition just to hear it in surround, and to hear the bonus songs, its still worth it to buy it again.

...but it was well worth it. Never heard these guys before, but heard good reviews of this...I mean, come on...pink robots???? But clever lyrics and an astounding 5.1 sound, it really grows on you with time. Now I listen to it to unwind and really love it's fresh sound and Waynes mellow vocals. Very aggressive surround...but quite enjoyable. And this is from a guy who loves Bach!

5.1 mix is a bit gimmicky...but still worth it - Reviewed on 2005-06-30

I love the album. And the 5.1 mix is enjoyable. But it strikes me as a bit gimmicky. Sure, it shows off sound coming from every direction, but it doesn't sound natural enough to me. If you read the liner notes that come with the album, for example, you'll see that on one track, they simply move the sound around the room in a clockwise direction. On another the bass moves around on every single note. It's almost like they had some presets they could program in rather than really looking at the music and thinking about what would sound best. Rather it sounds like they're "playing". Not that it's a bad mix. The Lips have a quirky sound, so a slightly quirky mix is not all bad. If something like a Led Zeppelin album were mixed like this, it would be awful. Since it's the Lips, it works okay.

But simply moving the audio around the room quickly or on every note does *not* make an "awesome" mix.
