Three decades after Rumours established itself as one of rock's most ubiquitous, overarching successes, discussing Fleetwood Mac's heady 1977 monster (18 million sold and counting) might seem pointless; one might as well deconstruct a Big Mac. But this remastered, double-disc deluxe edition succeeds by offering up a generous, compelling portrait of that overly familiar musical triumph via 18 bonus tracks that include demos, outtakes, run-throughs, and studio jams. Stripping hits like "Don't Stop," "Go Your Own Way" and "Gold Dust Woman" down to their most bare-bones form reveals the sturdy, elemental framework that tellingly lies beneath all the pop perfection. But tracks like Lindsey Buckingham's ebullient instrumental "Brushes" (the basic tracks of "Never Going Back Again") also display a musician whose focused vision is informed by accomplished playing that's anything but simple. The two brief studio jams included aren't much more than noisy, disposable fun. But other outtakes of songs that didn't make the album (Stevie Nicks's "Think About It" and "Planets of the Universe"; Buckingham's "Doesn't Anything Last") help underscore the contention of Dave DiMartino's insightful new liner notes: This was a band on the cusp of triumph literally coming apart at its emotional seams, yet one which somehow channeled that personal turmoil into nothing short of epochal musical success. --Jerry McCulley

BEST reissue EVER? - Reviewed on 2008-11-22
Hmm...i think the sound is fantastic. The booklets are informative and beautiful to look at. The bonus disc has such treasures to me- hearing Stevie Nicks harmonize (almost a duet!) on 'Oh Daddy' adds so much to that particular song, its like hearing it for the first time again, 30 years on...The bonus demos of 'Think About It' and "If You Ever Did Believe" in early recordings many YEARS before we ever heard them are priceless to me. Same goes for 'Planets of the Universe' which didn't actually see light of day for 23 years after this early, and beautiful, acoustic version on Disc 2.
If you love Fleetwood Mac, and especially if you can't get enough of Stevie Nicks, this is the best Fleetwood Mac reissue to get, in my opinion. So much of her voice and contibutions that were recorded during the 'Rumours' sessions (including, of course, the amazing 'Silver Springs' with 2 different and soaring versions presented) but didn't wind up on the 1977 release all are gloriously preserved and ready to be savored- her songwriting and vocal skills were at absolute perfection here and this release does NOT disappoint, with 3 different 'Gold Dust Woman' takes as the song kept coming to life, and plenty of alternate mixes of familiar songs in which Stevie is more prominently displayed- i have loved this cd for the 4 years i've had it and am tempted to buy a 2nd copy. So it sounds EXCELLENT to me. SIX STARS! Now how about the uncut 'Rosebud' documentary finally being released- uncut!!-- on dvd! Please :)
