Simple for beginners, deep enough for veterans - Reviewed on 2008-05-27
Soul Calibur remains one of the best in its genre. The concept utilized in the game is a straight-forward weapon based 3D fighting system, with each character using a unique weapon. The weapons utilized vary from types of swords and daggers to staffs and axes, making it simple to find a particular weapon that suits your style or general preferrence. The combat system is very user-friendly, with a four-button interface (horizontal attack, vertical attack, kick, and guard) to prevent some of the confusion that can occur in more complex fighters (like street fighter or king of fighters). While this simplicity makes this fighter an excellent choice for those new to the genre, it also leads to the most common complaint against the game: the ease with which "button-mashing" can be used. To further frustrate some players, the button-mashing technique can even cause an inexperienced competitor to beat a moderately-experienced individual. Since this is the case, it often takes some practice (as with any fighter) to ensure victory over those less-experienced. However, this is easily overlooked since the game can be played with many people of various skills and all are forced to improve their game, as opposed to simply doing the same thing all the time. I would heartily recommend this game for people who may not dive into more complex fighters, but want something to play with other like-minded friends. I also recommend this game to avid fighter fans, as there are some characters whose techniques are very difficult to utilize correctly (offering a good level of challenge even to experienced players). In my opinion, the Soul Calibur games are the most enjoyable fighters on the market today, and I will continue purchasing the new releases in the future.
