Though his looks are smart enough for frontman in a mass-marketed boy band, teenaged Peter Cincotti's musical soul seems wise decades beyond his years. The 19-year-old Columbia University sophomore's debut does more than bristle with promise: it delivers both sprightly performances and some unexpectedly sharp songwriting. The album's lean quartet format (bassist David Finck, drummer Kenny Washington, and Scott Kreitzer on tenor sax) is akin to working without a net, but the singer-pianist ambles through this well-chosen slate of songs with confidence to burn. The trio of originals (with lyrics by the musician's mother) range from the smartly swinging "I Changed the Rules" and "Are You the One?" to the weary romance of the ballad "Lovers, Secrets, Lies." But most of the Phil Ramone-produced album's surprises come in its cover choices. Cincotti effortlessly recasts rock-era fare like "Spinning Wheel"(which gets a Monk-influenced instrumental workout) in his own jazzy mold, with his evocative medley of "The Fool on the Hill/Nature Boy" sounding like it's been part of the American jazz repertoire all along. Cincotti's voice occasionally shows its tender years, but his shrewd instincts bridge genres and eras with mature, deceptive effortlessness throughout. --Jerry McCulley

Jazz piano sings standards - Reviewed on 2008-09-19

I'm not sure why you would compare him to Sinatra, Peter Cincotti is a Jazz PIANIST, who happens to do vocals, ala similiar to Harry Connick Junior, in that Mr. Connick Jr. is a jazz pianist. Frank Sinatra was a crooner. As for the worst song writer ever, that's a bit harsh since a number of these songs are old standards and one of the songs he wrote on here he did when he was like 14 or something and was pretty great.

This is a very nice cd if you like standards, and you like jazz piano. His voice is not awful, it's just not what you expect. I really like the version he does, it is not on this cd, however, of I like Paris.

You might like Cincotti if you feel warm and fuzzy over Harry Connick or possibly Steve Tyrell (not a great voice but pleasant with standards).
Sadly CD's don't age like wine. But there's promise. - Reviewed on 2008-03-31

He's almost great, but...

I wasn't stunned by his vocals. Not like when you hear Sinatra, Martin, Darin, or most recently Buble. I wouldn't include Peter Cincotti in that group...yet. We'll see.

"Sway" is his best track, and his strongest performance. "I changed the rules" was a poor choice a first track. Like "Are you the one?" you can hear a vocal sameness that didn't capture a first time listener.

As a music lover/audiophile, I want the first track to be "capturing." I want to be made into a instant fan, and be held to the experience. Unfortunately, I wasn't. I was too aware of this, and I had to convince myself to take my finger off the skip button.

You'll know what I mean when you compare "I changed the rules" to "sway."

All in all, I think the record companies did him a disservice, and tried to market his prodigy status. Unfortunately, his precociousness has been irrevocably burned into a record. This is too bad. Unlike wine, this CD won't get better 10 years from now.

The recording production is very good. The mixing is clear and properly staged. Each instrument is crisp, and well balanced one another.

I'll wait a few years before I buy another CD.

Competent jazz pianist. Absolutely terrible singer/songwriter. Don't waste your money on this totally overrated garbage. I can't believe there are people who actually give this joke the time of day.

I heard Peter perform his rendition of "St Louis Woman" on the Parkinson TV Show here in the UK and could not believe what I heard. He took a simple song and made it his own. Once I heard this I had to go out and buy the album that contained this track. Because of its simplicity and catchy beat, it just gets you hooked. I grew up listening to the likes of Sinatra and the other crooners, and I am an avid fan of Harry Connick Jr, but this young man is someone to watch out for. I now have both albums of Peter and hardly a week goes by without listening to one of them. There are not many times I am lost for words, but this is one of them. This is one gentleman I have got to take my hat off to. He is pure talent, his piano playing is supperb. One track where this is noticable is his rendition of "Ain't Misbehavin". Pure Genius!!! Buy anything this man produces as you will not be disappointed. Hurry up Peter, I can't wait for the next album.

It's very much like Peter Cincotti's next album "On the Moon". Perfect vocal, tender sound of the instruments. Altogether it's ideal for an audiophile. A very good recording quality.
