Description

Get ready for a wild and wacky comedy about a zany family diner where miracles are the order of theday! Starring OscarĀ® winner* Shirley MacLaine and OscarĀ® nominee** Teri Garr,Waiting for the Light is a "warm, endearing" (Variety) and "offbeat original" (Gannett News) that's "a triumph in every way" ("Cinema Showcase")! When single mom Kay Harris (Garr) inherits a failing small-town diner, her eccentric Aunt Z (MacLaine) attempts to liven things up with a 'ghostly' practical joke. But when Z suddenly suffers a stroke and her spirited prank is mistaken bythe townspeople for a spiritual vision, Kay soon discovers that it'll take a real miracle to bring her community and her family back together! *1983: Actress, Terms of Endearment **1982: Supporting Actress, Tootsie

"Jesus hits like an atom bomb," or so claims the spirited gospel tune that opens this inspired tale of practical jokes and providence during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The criminally underused Teri Garr is marvelous as the single mom who moves her irrepressibly theatrical Auntie Z (Shirley MacLaine in gypsy fortune teller regalia) and two prank-loving kids from Chicago to rural Washington State. Promises of good behavior to the contrary, Auntie Z whips up a flash powder and sleight-of-hand gag for their bitter hermit of a neighbor. A twist (of divine intervention?) transforms the prank into a holy vision and the rush of faith in their reborn neighbor spreads as the cold war heats up. Writer-director Christopher Monger refuses to ridicule any of his characters in this unjustly neglected comedy, a smart, sly, and ultimately profound portrait of the power of faith and forgiveness in times of fear. --Sean Axmaker

We have been watching this movie at least once a year for 13 years. It was especially good when everybody in the family was bummed out or just needed to lighten up a bit.

Shirley and Teri were wonderful together in this movie! Teri was wonderful doing this role as in other role she's done. Shirley must have done so much hilarious stuff that one time I saw it, I feel off the bed and choked because of the funninest things she did. All in all, this was a great movie and one Shirley and Teri's best movies.
