Editorial Review

As a warning, "Civilization" goes well beyond the simple, après-dinner board game. Knowledge and commitment are both required as players track the development of civilization, from the farthest reaches of the past to modern times. It's a complicated journey--especially on a one-dimensional playing board--but those who know what they're getting into will love it (the PC version, just as detailed, has a dedicated fan base). The game revolves around the acquisition of resources--metals, spices, fuels, media, technology--all of which spur more innovation in some way. Of course, the game has its own revisionist twist on how certain regions progressed, but that doesn't distract. Players know there is as much fantasy involved as fact. Included are "exploration" markers, faux currency, playing cards, and molded props like soldiers, settlers, and property. The 36 by 46-inch playing-board map, moreover, is based on a pre-continental world, divided into vast regions rather than countries. Hints of the creator's own philosophies are evident in the historical "add-ons" found in the cartography. Diane Beall

For starters this game is HUGE. The board is divided into 3 large cardboard folded pieces you need to lay side by side. You need lots of time to both prepare and play this one. Once you have set it up you need lots of time to learn the rules. They are very scattered throughout the rule book and very complex. The first game Hubby and I had took us 6 hours, learning the rules as we went, and we didnt finish the game. This is great for a cold wet wintery day, not for after dinner socialisation. Once you pick up the basics in the "Basic" rules the game can go a bit faster. When you first cut all the plastic play pieces out of thier holders I recommend you put them in seperate "era" bags for easier finding during the game. This is a fairly strategic game that has a bit of luck involved and you really have to think about what you are doing and it uses lots of brainpower. All in all I enjoy this game but as it takes so long we dont play it often and its so complex that its difficult to teach others. I think this is truely a game for those geeky people who love to be challenged.
takes for ever to leare, but once you do, this game rocks!!!!!! - Reviewed on 2005-07-13

this game is just the right mixture of luck and skill. for example, at the beginning of the game you lay out chips on each of the countries. when you decide that you want to build a civilization on the country you can either get a resource giving you money or a plague, terrain, or a no resource tile. for skill you have to maneuver trades to stay alive yet plot wars. don't get intimidated by the complexity and number of pieces. just stick with it and it will give you hours of fun with your friends and family! it is also really educational. teachers use this game in some curriculums. you also might have heard of college kids staying up all night playing civilization tournaments. i recommend the advanced version (you get to use the effects of technologies and find wonders.) also be creative, make up your own rules!

I was excited to play this game when I first bought it. However, after on eplay, I will probably never play the game again.

I am a big fan of the pc game and assumed I would be able to play the board game with little difficulty. However, there were just so many issues. First, the instructions are pathetic. It lists game pices that don't even exist. For example. It told me I could build chariots, but there are no chariots included in the game. Second, trying to keep cities and improvements in order was confusing and usually got messed up during game play.

If you are thinking of purchasing this game, don't bother. Play the pc game again instead.

Exciting and fun, but yet hard to play and set up. Civilization the board game has many pros and cons:
-Pros: It's a wonderful action packed strategy game, with a realistic approach.
-Cons: Takes ages to set up, let alone play it. A good long while to play Risk or even Monopoly will not be suficiant for this game!
-Overall vertict: If your a person who has a lot of free time on thier hands, and has friends that like long strategy games, BUY THIS GAME! But if you the kind of person who really likes other strategy games like Risk, but barely can find enough time to play them, DON'T BUY THIS GAME! I'd recommened something like Risk 2210 A.D. OR Diplomacy.

I own the Civilization 3 video game. I saw this in a store and bought it. It cost me $64, from retail. But even at that price, it was worth it. The game is strategic, and not all-out war. It takes at least 4 hours to play. THe game can differ depending on your opponents. For instance, you can focus on economy with good content players. It turns into a world war when you play with greedy players. Military is not the only way to win, and that's a strong point. The military minitures are all the same color. I don't like that, but I can deal with it. You simply place a flag bearer to signify a unit is yours. The tech-tree is don incredibly well, and you must choose between naval, ground, air, settlers, and technologios to win. If this game costed $800, I'd still get it. If you haven't got it yet, get it now, or you have nothing left to live for.
